Oh - what can we say? This Lodge was absolutely amazing. Having spent time previously at The Elephant Camp (TEC) which is also a property owned by Wild Horizons, we were not disappointed. A different concept from TEC, The Old Drift Lodge (ODL) is situated on the Zambezi - so close you could fall off your balcony and be in the Zambezi (not recommended!). Our room was gorgeous - 2 showers, one inside and one outside. Both were huge and the water was so lovely on my hair - better than it has been in years with no chemicals. The lounge area with mini-bar, tea/coffee station and ice maker was great for early morning and late afternoon tea as we watched the sky start to darken before the sunset took place - a breathtaking thing to watch. The space was great and very large - with an “office” type bench out of sight behind the headboard, 2 huge wardrobes and drawers and cupboards galore for putting all our clothes and suitcases away. We have never experienced such generous sized accommodation before, and there was an attached second bedroom with 2 beds, toilet, vanity and shower for extra guests if required. The sunsets were amazing and sitting up in bed with a cup of coffee, just watching the skyline turn from light to pale apricot and then suddenly burning orange was just breathtaking. Then the sun would appear brilliantly red and just sit there as the day emerged. We had a buffalo outside our room one night and heard the lions calling in the middle of the night. The staff, food and decor were second to none. The food was so fresh and there was so much of it we had to ask for half portions at every meal because the standard portion was huge. The variety on the menu was also unbelievable and the staff could not do enough for you. Had a great time at the gift shop also and the managers, Himal and Irene were very accommodating - if they didn’t have it they would get it. Our 2 grand children are overjoyed with their Lion Cub & Leopard Cub t-shirts. Our silver elephant butter dish is proudly displayed at home now also. We experienced a fabulous boat trip one morning and saw dozens of hippo. Some in the water and many on land, sunning themselves. We have never before seen so many hippo on land and one in particular was a very bright pink underneath. The number of “hippo highways” all along the Zambezi riverbank was great and to see the enormous mother hippo being followed by her tiny baby was just gorgeous. There is really nothing more we can add to this review, because it would never end. We will definitely be returning to ODL in 2 years time and in the interim the planning for our next visit will make it even more exciting. Thank you ODL, Himal & Irene, all the staff - you made it a visit to remember.
