My partner and I travelled to Alpe D’Huez on the 30th of March and we had a fantastic stay at Grandes Rousses Hotel & Spa. Room Initially we had booked a classic room and once we checked in we were very disappointed as it did not align with our expectations from the pictures. Mainly because the room was very dark and lacking natural light. Also the wardrobe was in bathroom which we found very strange and not suitable to keep our clothes. We returned to reception and the receptionist was very polite and looked to see if there was an alternative room available. After consulting with a manager we were shown to a triple room which was south facing and much more aligned with our expectations and we gladly accepted this new room. The manager who showed us to this room was very polite and professional. Changing to this room hugely improved our room as everyday we woke to a beautiful view of the village and mountains. We can’t thank the hotel enough for moving us to this room. In future I would automatically book a triple room for the extra space, we had 3 suitcases so needed it. Or a panoramic room / superior. Check in experience We drove and upon arrival the the hotel porter unloaded our car and once we checked in brought our luggage up to our room and also came to move our luggage to the new room. We were also given a tour of the hotel by the receptionist and explained all that was available. It was very smooth and professional. Bar Decorated to a high standard with a wide variety of food/snack and drinks. Good wine menu and a sommelier on hand to assist if needed. Service was a little slow but quality of food/drink was very good and staff very polite. Restaurant We ate in l'Esperance and the food was very high quality and service was very good. As expected for a 5 star hotel. Breakfast Breakfast was fantastic, a wide range of all food you could want before a day on the slope. Fresh fruit, cakes, pastries, breads, cold hand & cheeses, bacon, sausage, egg etc. Wide range of fresh juices. Overall we were very happy and couldn’t have asked for more. This week was extra special for my partner and I as I proposed one of the days out on the slopes. I had also brought with me some decorations for the room which the hotel concierge happily assisted me in decorating the room with the rose petals and balloons I had provided. I also asked for a bottle of Champagne to be waiting in the room upon our return, which it was, a lovely bottle of Blanc de Blancs. So again, thank you very much to the hotel staff for making our stay extra special. Overall I highly recommend Grandes Rousses, it lives up to its 5* rating and we look forward to returning again in the future.

We just spent a week here, and as we mentioned the service is world class and deserves recognition. Everyone, from front desk to the people helping with fixing the room do a great job with a friendly smile! Well done. The hotel is also very well located in the village, and with nicely set up facilities, bar and restaurant. Breakfast is great. Only small minus, the room was a little small (but we are in the alps. The south facing terrace is great with a fabulous view!

Firstly, this is not a 5 star hotel! We booked this hotel for our honeymoon hoping for a relaxing cosy ski week. When we arrived they do not give off a friendly welcome. We were just stared at by the check in staff and we had to speak first it was all very strange! They told us absolutely nothing about the hotel, it’s amenities or where anything is. All we had to do was pay an excessive deposit of 700 euros! No personalised welcome considering it’s a 5 star and our honeymoon which they already knew. Room: There are 2 sections to this hotel: the new area and the old area. The new area looks much better so make sure you book that if you want to stay here. We got given honestly the worst room in the hotel. Right at the side down a small corridor: the room smells like body odour every time we come into it. I’ve realised it’s the wall cushions which probably never get cleaned and are permanently attached to the wall. There is an open hole in the bathroom with electrical wires sticking out- see photos. Hairs in the glasses. Bathroom blind is broken. Decor very strange and not cosy. We received an email after the first night asking for feedback. I gave my feedback and have not heard anything since! I’m currently on day 5. We rang down and asked to change rooms if possible as we were not happy with the smell and they said no it’s fully booked. Not even anything offered to make up for it. They haven’t contacted us since. We are very disappointed that this is our honeymoon and there is not one personalised touch. Something you would expect from a 5 star experience? The service: Terrible service throughout the hotel. They left a plate of food in our room for 2 days! I had to call and get it taken but they said leave it in the corridor. The bar downstairs you wait ages for a drink or the bill and have to go and ask yourself. If you ring reception and ask for something they don’t bring it. We also went into the spa area and was told we can’t use it as it’s 12 people only and have to book - when we looked inside it was near enough empty. Something we should have been told by check in staff? No idea we had to book it. Restaurants looked empty every single night and considering they told us the hotel is fully booked I somehow think they just couldn’t be bothered to move our room or find the manager. They also never told us about any of the restaurants or when they open etc. The only good parts about this hotel is the ski shop linked to it, the staff in there are so helpful and friendly! Location: Good location ski in and out and links to the main ski areas. I would not stay here again, you can definitely get more for your money elsewhere. They need to work on service and attending to guests needs. We are very disappointed!

We choose the Grand Rousses Hotel as it was one recommended by the Alp d’Huez Triathlon Organizers this year. On the day of the triathlon, they didn’t have our preordered breakfast ready (as the shuttles buses were departing at 7am, and it was a 20min walk to the bus we had to preorder), told us to leave the breakfast area even as the main breakfast was being laid out and were quite defensive of the issue at checkout (additionally adding many incorrect charges). This hotel needs to rethink its service to athletes participating in an event they promote.

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights whilst I did the Marmotte bike ride. The hotel and staff were fantastic, we could not have asked for more. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the hotel facilities were great.

We booked a 3 night stay and left after 1 night. We travelled with our 2 young children only to be informed on arrival the playroom was closed (no reason). From the moment we arrived the staff lead with no no no. No dinner menu, just bar junk food served in the restaurant (burgers, chicken strips, fries, poke bowl). No outdoor pool which yes we saw the pop up on the website before arrival. We thought this would be the only limits on the trip. But we were very wrong. No use of the indoor spa pool for children under 16 even when it's empty. No message of this online. Essentially if you have children there is nothing in the hotel to do. So I wonder why have the familleplus symbol? Maybe a pop up on the website saying no family amenities available temporarily would be more honest. The top was being told to enjoy the bathtub in the room instead of the pool! Guests were talking between them in the restaurant in shock that a bar menu was being served for dinner. Why not tell people before arriving? This is absolutely not what a 5 star hotel stands for. Even if it’s the start of the season a 5 star hotel wouldn’t open with such poor service! As a swiss hotel school graduate and having worked in several 5 star hotels this was shocking to see. All the issues would be potentially acceptable if it was communicated clearly in advance. Given there was little for the family to enjoy we had no choice but book another hotel and leave. 1 star given because thé breakfast was great and so was the bar staff. The bar staff who made an excellent cocktail on our first night was the highlight of the stay. The rest was a huge waste of time and money. Avoid or email in advance to ask for their limits before arriving. Otherwise you are welcomed with a list of no no no nos. Also no apology! What a shame.

Great staff, very friendly, great gym, good facilities our son needed to use the gym part way through the rugby season and they were so accommodating! Can’t recommend it highly enough. Thanks very much! You truly are a 5 star place! The Rope Family x

Extremely comfortable and stylish hotel right by the lifts that travel to the slopes and you can ski back home at the end of the day. We opted for half board and the food is excellent but a little formal for our teenagers although delicious. The wines are very expensive and need more options of wines of better value to choose from. My room on the first floor had great views of the village and mountains behind but was right above the terrace so a little noisy if you wanted to get to bed early but the bar closes at a decent time. There is an ice hockey rink in the village and that can be noisy late into the night if they hold events but overall the room was very relaxing, comfortable beds and warm. The Ski locker and shop is in the basement so easy to rent/store skis and there is a great pool, sauna and hot tub on the roof. We will definitely go back!
