Senator Huelva

Huelva|0.32km from city centre
We were delighted with our room, but Senator Huelva had a sign in reception saying that breakfast was 8am to 11am. We were on a relaxing holiday so late breakfast was our preference. Arriving at say: 10:10 meant surly staff were clearing away as we tried to serve ourselves to the buffet and were impatient or unco-operative about any requests, for example, for a plate when they had run out. Then reception changed to sign to say breakfast was finishing at 10:30. This meant that from 10am the same carry-on started earlier and the doors closed at 10:30 on the dot. Staff, except for the cleaners, who were lovely people, were unfriendly and distant. Maybe the are paid badly or under stress, but we were there for a week and did not get a friendly word from anyone. WARNING do not use the carpark unless you are a very experienced driver. We arrived at 1am in a rental car from Faro and were put under pressure to pay for a week's parking. I resisted, thankfully, and we used it that night. We had a most stressful experience trying to find parking in a low, narrow, crowded carpark. We spent a lot of the next morning worrying about getting the car out again, especially as it was a rented car and any little scratch would be costly. To make things worse, as my partner was making the third attempt to manoeuver around the bend to exit, the hotel-controlled metal shutter began to descend. We narrowly avoided disaster by driving out quickly but I cannot imagine what would have happened if there had been pedestrians or we had stalled. There is a big, roomy and for-the-same-price carpark just further down the street beside the restaurants.

Hotel Convento Aracena & Spa

Hotel Convento Aracena & Spa

Aracena
We read some good reviews on line but this hotel lacks the character of other convent conversions such as the Paradores and there is little art or artist flair. I think other reviews said ‘dull and boring’ and these descriptive words are appropriate ! Other reviews mentioned the difficulty in finding the car park or even the hotel itself - the staff seem to think that that the one way system and narrow roads of Aracena are the problem - far from it - good signage and good basic instructions from the reception desk would go along way , especially instructions around approaching the car park and the relationship to the checking in process ! The staff tried hard to make up for short comings but for the price they charge they need to up their game with more and better trained staff - staff who can truely imagine a customers experience and journey ! Perhaps use of a secret customer giving them unbiased feedback, as they don’t seem to have learned from feedback on Tripadvisor! Dinner was satisfactory but ot would not encourage a hotel to be just satisfactory - guests should feel to was a great authentic experience and want to repeat the experiences. The redeeming factor was the breakfast which was very good indeed and the overall pleasant surroundings and easy access to the castle of Aracena and of course the amazing local caves. For the manager - first impressions are everything - you make your mind up in the first minute of arrival in a hotel! As regards the Spa - well the Spa wasn’t open on the morning of departure and had no availability on the evening of arrival despite paying extra on our room - this situation wasn’t advised on arrival by reception so if we hadn’t mentioned it a little later we can only imagine they would not have mentioned anything and just kept the extra money! In English this is called ‘being fleeced ‘! As we had indeed mentioned it we did get a refund at reception on departure ( thank you ) but perhaps this was because we also had to mention finding long hairs in the sink - not pleasant! While I gave the hotel 3 stars - personally I would not stay there again but others I imagine will be happy enough to try it and hopefully not be fleeced ;-) let’s hope management will try and improve as this hotel certainly has potential and improvement is about learning and changing the way things are done! I compare my visit to the wonderful conversion of the Convento de la Magdalena in Antequera - the two hotels just don’t compare !

The hotel is very comfortable and very comfortable. Parador de Ayamonte

Except for the weekends (when chairs are taken away next to your door, by other people), the area is very quiet to stay. The swimming pool is already cold in September. The service in the garden is mostly followed up well. The light in the garden is heavy and invite moustiques.

Hotel la Malvasia
4.4/547 Reviews
Reading about the La Malvasia, I thought I would like it. I did not. I loved it. It was everything it promised. And much more. Everyone on staff was exceptionally helpful, most especially the kind angels who arranged to get our left-behind passports to us. No task was too big, no request too small. The standouts in the stay were the size and layout of our beautiful and spacious suite, number 12. We have never before had such a comfortable accomodation in any of  our dozens of trips to Europe....or anywhere else in the world. And the graciousness of the hotel is enhanced by the natural beauty of its setting. The lake/marsh that serves as the ”front yard” is a vast expanse full of birds, and wild horses. Hundreds of Flamingoes dance across the waters as dozens of Cattle Egrets swarm the skies. Too many magic moments to note them all in one review. The meals were well prepared and presented, the rooms kept to a high standard of cleanliness, the internet connection strong and fast. My one and only disappointment was that the lovely restaurant was lit too brightly at night for dinner.  We would have much preferred candlelight as the soft jazz and moonlit marsh begged for a more romantic dining experience. We look forward to returning to Hotel La Malvasia and hope the next time it will be for considerably more time than the 3 nights we spent on this visit.

Garden Playanatural - Adults Only

We visited the hotel at the beginning of October. I’d been anxious about negative reviews but our experience was generally good. All members of staff were helpful and polite and we had no real issues. We were allocated a room at the side of the hotel with a pleasant view of the trees and the sea in the distance. We were not charged for a sea view. The hotel is very well kept and our room was clean and comfortable with a huge bed and lots of space. Food was generally good - a good selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner (we were on an AI rate). We didn’t try the pool bar for lunch as there were limited choices. Wine selection for AI was very poor. We diluted with sparkling water! Only one wine allowed of red, rose and white. No Cava in restaurant although allowed in bar or by the pool. Odd! Our pre dinner g and ts in the bar were fine. Entertainment was very hit and miss. The Soul evening was excellent but some of the offerings by the entertainment team fell short of enjoyable. Swimming pools were huge and great to swim once you got over the slight chill. Not many people used the pools for swimming! Loads of sun beds but they are not very comfortable and many need replacing. We used a cushion which helped a bit. The hotel is in a lovely setting but is very remote. We had a car so this wasn’t a problem for us - we visited the local town - El Rompido - which has a great nature walk from the car park by the lighthouse. Also recommend a trip to Ayamonte. A good value holiday and we were blessed with amazing weather.
