Awatea Country Bed & Breakfast

Hapuku|4.81km from city centre
Reading that Kaikōura is the whale watching capital of New Zealand, I decided to go there and then needed accommodation I usually avoid staying in hotels, as it's impersonal and often too monotonous, so, I looked for something else When I found about Awatea Country Bed & Breakfast, I believed I had found the right place, and I can now say so for sure I arrived late (it was already pitch dark) and yet the family welcomed me, Kevin, Ann, and their 2 dogs Boston & Fatbob Kevin showed me around and took care of the conversations, while Ann cooked dinner for me, benefiting from her husband hunting passion and skills to prepare, just for me, a delicious homemade venison burger (evening meal as an option), The dogs are English Springer Spaniels, quite impressive size wise then, but actually very easygoing, so even if you've had bad experiences in the past with dogs (like I have) you should be not only fine, but at ease, no worries at all There's a huge living room where everyone can meet, I actually got to meet another guest and her 2 dogs In it there's a wood fireplace, great for winter nights, and a bookcase with lots of books including guidebooks Wifi works great everywhere I had the last room on the right. It was huge, with an ensuite bathroom (as they all do) The bed had not only lots of covers to keep you warm, but also an electric blanket... and on top of that there was a heater in the room too, so, you definitely will be able to feel warm and cozy no matter the weather There was a patio door with direct access to the garden, and beautiful views over it and the mountain Talking about the garden, right behind there's also a pasture, theirs, with alpacas, goats, sheep, cows... Then breakfast, ohhh the (included) breakfast, fresh fruits, jam, yogurt, pancakes, fruit juice... in addition of the ever available bread, Nutella, Vegemite, muesli, tea, coffee (with lots & lots of options for those)... substantial, fresh and yummy, loved it In the morning I got to chat with both They were happy to do so, but also to give me privacy whenever they thought I would prefer it, which was thoughtful When I left Kevin gave me a ride downtown for my whale watching tour, which was appreciated As I went back to North Island by plane, from Queenstown, I didn't pass by there again, to my regret I would highly recommend staying at Awatea Bed & Breakfast, indeed when planning to go whale watching in Kaikoura, but even if just passing by on the way or from the ferry town of Picton, well worth the overnight or even a couple nights to get to relax well and make new friends (and if you have pets to help them too have new friends :D) Ann, Kevin, lovely meeting you All the best, you deserve it David from France

The Factory Luxury Accomodation
5/55 Reviews
Everything about The Factory is just gorgeous - from the stunning setting sandwiched between moody mountains and the everchanging surf beach - lie in bed or on the comfy loungers and listen to waves, tui & bellbirds - to the perfect decor along with a character building with an interesting history... Add in wonderful hosts who go above and beyond to ensure you have a great stay, and all I can say is what a winner. So lucky that we can get in the car and drive here in a couple of hours! Thanks so much team Factory - pleasure to meet you. We'll be back!
Manakau Lodge
4.9/58 Reviews
Our three night stay at Manukau Lodge was very enjoyable. We had a spacious room with a comfortable king sized bed, well appointed bathroom, two lounge chairs, desk and tv with sound bar, Netflix and movies. There is a separate lounge and dining area available for the sole use of guests. We took in the fantastic view of the mountains behind the lodge from the deck and outdoor furniture outside our room. It is a short drive into Kaikoura for activities and restaurants. Neil was a welcoming host with many other talents and interests who is very knowledgeable about the area.
Koura Bay Golf Resort
4.4/532 Reviews
The most surprising hotel this time, we arrived at night, just want to say, drive the darkest night road, see the most beautiful starry sky. Lying on the lounge chair on the edge of the lawn, I felt like I was in the stars and the sea. The best part was that I saw a meteor for the first time in my life, long and short, across the sky. I woke up in the morning and found that the hotel has a great view, with the golf course at the door, and the sea view. Suitable for couples, family trips. Location About 10 minutes' drive from Kaikoura town, self-driving recommended

Mr & MRS Smith Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses

Simply classy and first-rate in every way! Located several miles from Kaikoura town center but DEFINITELY worth a multi-night stay for romance oriented couples. The attentive staff went out of their way to ensure that every little need or want was met above and beyond expectation - often predicting things we might enjoy (such as heating up the cedar wood dry sauna and stone-lined adjacent outdoor jacuzzi even before we indicated that we wanted to use them). Our room was gorgeous - the design was modern yet warmed with wooden cabinetry evidencing extreme attention to detail (heated bathroom floor, heated towel racks, large walk-in shower, views of adjacent pastural lands, etc.). Beautiful common room with fireplace and various lounge seating areas to enjoy a handcrafted cocktail and light conversation before dinner. And the on-site dinner? A completely 5 star dining experience clearly prepared by talented chefs and served by polite and personable staff. Well-suited for an intimate evening or special occasion. The breakfast, included as part of the stay, was equally delicious and elegant. Top marks for everyone at this wonderful establishment.
