Stayed here for a family wedding, chosen because of close proximity to Hampton Manor. Accommodation in the annexe was unsatisfactory, small dingy room and lack of storage space. Bathroom very basic, no shelving or rail to hang towels (had to place items on floor). Website states toiletries but none were supplied. Rooms in the main building could be accessed by an outdoor fire escape or very steep staircase. Not suitable for elderly or people with mobility issues. Tables in the restaurant felt sticky, not pleasant when eating.

Great place for a relaxed drink and food. Sharing platter never disappoints. Pizza variety is good and very fresh. Good selection of beers and wines: The staff are all friendly and chatty. Definitely recommend if you’re ever in the area or at a loose end for an impromptu night out.

I'd give a 3.5 if I could. My stay here was fine. The room was nice and traditional. I'm also including the evening meal I had in the review. I had a black pudding starter which turned out to be nothing like I expected (not in a good way but just my opinion). I know beer is going up in price but £6.70 for a pint of Brixton Volt is a bit much in my books. The breakfast was very good. I'd stay again if nearby.

Stayed for one night here for a concert at the arena. The train station is in walking distance from the inn which is very handy and is only one stop away. The village itself is a lovely place. We had 3 rooms booked at the inn and all of them were of a good standard. I would recommend asking for a room at the back due to road noise and the church clock chiming every hour through the night. The inn itself is lovely and the breakfast served was hot and very nice. You can see that the building is very old and this is the theme kept throughout. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. My only suggestion to the owners is to have some kind of key lock system with a code so you can obtain your room key when the inn is closed. We were able to access our room after 430pm, when the inn opened. You get free parking at the back if you give your numberplate details inside. Would I stay here again? Absolutely!

Beef Burger was very dry, hard, thin and salty. They call themselves a bistro - a burger should be made in house not frozen! Asked for Stilton on it but did not have any on it when it arrived. Chips were very hot yet somehow undercooked. Chicken Milanese came with some form of tinned spaghetti on the side. Fish and chip’s extremely greasy and lasagna was awful awful. Piled high with a load of sloppy tomato sauce on top which overwhelmed it - the whole dish was drowned in it. Yuk. Avoid eating here. Was under the impression that this was good bistro / pub grub: it is no where near good pub grub. We will go to The Boat next time. The ambience of the place was nice but that sadly does not make up for.a terrible meal. No one came to ask us how our food was and we had to ask for drink refills each time. Can’t advise enough not to risk it.

Atmosphere and meal was just perfect had sharing chicken wings so delicious and the pie special was superb. Combined with the perfect pint and relaxed attentive service could not fault really great evening especially for a Valentine’s Day dinner..

As far as positives are concerned, located close to Hampton Manor, NEC and Airport, it also serves an ok breakfast and a decent pint of beer. Sadly the rooms are dismal. Dark, tired furniture, the worst mattress ever and a shower that operates only at two extremes - scolding hot ( I mean scolding ) or freezing cold. Owner blames everything on age of building but no reason why 400 year old place shouldn’t function as well as somewhere new. Car Park muddy and poorly lit , do yourself a favour and either find somewhere else nearby or sleep in the car

Dog-friendly place which was a bonus for us as we were having lunch at Hampton Manor and staying in the pub for the night. Fantastic local atmosphere in a proper English pub. Quirky old room and incredible value for money.

We booked one night on our way to Buxton and really enjoyed it. A lovely atmosphere and extremely friendly owner. We talked about how it’s a shame so many pubs are now “gastro” and have lost that pub feel. The White Lion is a lovely, old, honest pub, with quirky rooms and friendly service. Not everything was perfect, but we wouldn’t expect that. It was a great night, the homemade pie and apple tart tatin were absolutely delicious and the wine was very reasonable. The village itself is beautiful, and we’d highly recommend for dog owners. Lots of varied walks from the pub front door. We’ll be back.
