"The hotel looks a little far at first (about 10–15 min walk from the station), but with the cool windy weather, it felt like an easy walk. Maybe in mid-summer or snow winter it could be tougher, but during our stay it was very comfortable short walk for us. The room was spacious and spotless. The sofa was already prepared with bed sheets and pillows, making it easy for a 3rd or even 4th guest to sleep (just make sure to put the correct number of guests, including children, when booking). The onsen was excellent – clean, large, and with real spring water. There’s also a washing machine (bring your own detergent), and a kitchenette in the room, though you need to borrow cooking utensils from the front desk, guest need to clean them after use. (No condiments are provided) Breakfast was very good, but the only downside is the 40-minute time limit. Most of the staff were polite and friendly, though one female staff at reception and a male staff at the breakfast area seemed less welcoming. Overall, I’d recommend this place to families who want a spacious room with a small kitchen and a proper onsen. Definitely choose the breakfast plan if you book."

"The location is absolutely fantastic. Hakodate Station has only one exit, and the hotel is the tall building immediately to the left, with the Hakodate Morning Market right across to the right. Immediately after checking in, we took a taxi to the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses, with Hachiman-zaka Slope just a short walk away. Only upon returning to the hotel did we realize that Hakodate Station is right by the sea, and a leisurely stroll along the waterfront also leads directly to the Red Brick Warehouses. With buses and taxis available right outside the station entrance, getting around is incredibly convenient. The hotel lobby is spacious and bright, offering plenty of comfortable sofas for guests to relax. The hotel features a public bath and sauna, and after a relaxing soak, complimentary popsicles in various flavors are a delightful treat. Breakfast offers a wide variety of dishes, including all-you-can-eat sashimi! All the food was delicious, and we were constantly delighted by the offerings. Overall, a truly wonderful experience. Highly recommended! Although we didn't go up Mount Hakodate for the famous night view, our hotel window offered a stunning vista of the sea. As night fell, the coastline and the illuminated buildings sparkled, creating an equally breathtaking nocturnal panorama. Absolutely magnificent!"

"Although the room was a bit small, it was spotlessly clean, well-equipped, and efficiently designed. Everything was thoughtfully laid out and easy to use, and it even came with a washing machine and a microwave. After admiring the night view from Mount Hakodate in the evening, by 9 PM the streets were deserted and all the shops were closed for the night. So, we simply bought some delicious food from a convenience store, warmed it up back at the hotel, and enjoyed a truly comfortable and satisfying meal. The hotel is conveniently located just a few minutes' walk from the JR station. Popular attractions like Hachiman-zaka Slope, the Red Brick Warehouses, and the Mount Hakodate Ropeway are all within easy walking distance, which was incredibly convenient."

"La Vista Hakodate Bay exceeded my expectations. The location is perfect — within walking distance to major spots like the red brick warehouse and Mt. Hakodate ropeway. The room was clean, spacious, and had a lovely nostalgic Japanese feel. The rooftop onsen was absolutely amazing, especially with the open-air bath overlooking the night view of Hakodate. The free late-night ramen was a nice surprise! Most of all, I want to thank a female staff member who gave us the best service I’ve experienced in Japan. She was incredibly kind, attentive, and thoughtful. I didn’t catch her name, but she truly made my stay unforgettable. Highly recommended!"

"The hotel is conveniently located within a 10-minute walk from Hakodate JR Station. The absolute highlight was the incredibly extensive breakfast, offering a wide variety of dishes including ramen and sashimi. Another major plus was the rooftop hot spring (onsen), which boasted fantastic views and was perfect for unwinding. On the same floor as the onsen, there's a snack bar open until 11 PM, where you can conveniently charge items like ramen, takoyaki, and ice cream directly to your room card. Overall, it was a very comfortable and pleasant stay."

"I've stayed in many hotels, and this one definitely ranks among the best in terms of service. I arrived quite late, but the front desk staff still greeted me warmly and helped with my luggage. The room was cozy, and they even provided welcome fruit and snacks—a truly thoughtful touch. The next day, I was in a rush and didn't have time for breakfast, but the hotel unexpectedly prepared a packed breakfast for me to enjoy on the road. This level of thoughtful service truly touched me and I absolutely must give it a thumbs-up!"

"All in all, the authentic Japanese hot spring facilities and atmosphere were great !! BUT BUT BUT —Who would guess that we bumped into a tsunami warning !! During 15 minutes, I was on the third floor, not knowing what to do or where to go!! The front desk didn’t answer my calls and the broadcast was only in Japanese!!! God punished me for not studying Japanese hard !! It was lucky that nothing happened! Otherwise, I think other foreign guests would have been so lost and anxious !!!! The hotel should really put foreign guests into consideration too!! The staff at front desk didn’t really speak English, so it was hard to communicate…."

BBphilly93I loved every moment staying there. The staff was so welcoming and kind. The bike rental was pretty cheap and affordable, and so many places to visit within walking distance of the hotel. I met so many people from around that were also staying there plus a lot of awesome natives from Japan. I’d totally recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to visit Hakodate.

GGuest UserOverall, the hotel is decent. It's new, conveniently located, the breakfast was quite lavish, and there's a complimentary lounge, all at a reasonable price. However, the bath towels were shockingly dirty. All four bath towels provided over our two-night stay were filthy, and we only received clean ones after explicitly asking the staff for replacements. What's truly unbelievable is that this happened with all four towels for two consecutive days. It seriously makes you wonder about the hotel's hygiene standards and operations. I cannot recommend this hotel.

GGuest UserWe booked this hotel for a special stay for our Christmas Day abroad and it did not disappoint. The rooms are cozy, spacious and quiet with very comfy beds. We appreciated the entry way with the closet and shoe rack. We also appreciated the shower with great pressure, the large sink counter and the Japanese style toilet. There was also a good amount of toiletries provided. We had Japanese style pajamas, slippers for the room, sandals to go around the hotel in and even slippers specifically for the toilet area. The room has a large TV and you can connect to it with an HDMI cable or screencast but we could not figure out how to screencast. The hotel primarily caters to Japanese so the important stuff was in English but the little things like the remote control and temperature control were not. We booked our stay with the buffet dinner and breakfast and for our stay it seems that all the greatest hits for Japanese cuisine were out. For dinner they had a steak grilling station, a BBQ scallop station, a sushi chef, crab dumplings and all kinds of accompaniments. For the dessert they had an array of tasty sweets but we enjoyed the macarons and Hokkaido ice cream the most. The breakfast was equally fantastic with a miso soup station, all kinds of sashimi, black pork dumplings, fried chicken and all kinds of crowd pleasers. There is a juice station and a coffee machine that makes all kinds of drinks so we were very pleased with the meals. We appreciated the plates and small dishes that allowed for small portions so we could pretty much try everything. Some items at the buffet did run out and these were specifically the small dishes - it is worth going early for breakfast and dinner because some items are not replenished and I found quite a few of these very delicious! There isn't much around the hotel other than a 7-11 and a small botanical garden across the bridge but it is definitely a hotel meant to stay in and enjoy. We went to the onsen at night and in the morning and really enjoyed the outdoor bath which was sea facing. At night you could hear the waves and see the stars and during the day you could enjoy the beach and mountain view. The onsen baths have a variety of temperature pools and saunas and good bath products. There is a machine that dispenses a few pop flavours, cold tea and mineral water in the change room. There was a variety of self care products available in the change rooms as well like toothbrushes and razors. Our room was very cozy after our bath and we found that the temperature for the hotel was possibly centrally controlled and not adjustable according to Google translation. It was set at a balmy 24 but we did figure out how to turn it off and got a comfortable night's rest. I wasn't a big fan of the hard toothbrushes that were provided mainly because the toothbrush used a coating rather than toothpaste which makes them truly single use. The hotel offers quite a few amenities outside of the onsen area but the onsen was the highlight for us. They have a lounge area with lots of seats looking out to the sea near the front desk, a separate restaurant from the buffet restaurant, a souvenir shop that sells drinks too and luggage storage. We aren't sure if there are multiple floors with laundry machines but the one laundry room we did find only had one machine so this might not be a hotel to do your laundry at. The hotel is easily accessible from both the train station and airport. From the train station you can take a bus or the tram which would take about 30 minutes and from the airport there are some dedicated busses that will take about 15 minutes. The bus station and tram station closest to the hotel is Yunokawa Onsen. This was a great stay for us and we felt one night here was perfect. There is a lot to see in Hakodate and had we stayed longer we would have chosen a more economical option but this truly was a special treat for us.

WWee LoonLocation is the king. Booked a room that can see the canal right off the window for a peaceful view. Otaru is a small town and most of the places are within walking distance. Stroll along the Otaru canal right in front of the hotel was great! Room itself was normal, and we have one advice for the hotel to just remove the aged cupboards in front of the beds since nobody really needs them to give more walking space and luggage space. Onsen on the top floor was decent though not of the best, offering a good view of the canal. Service at the hotel was normal. Those who have cars will need to pay 1200 yen for one day of parking (will need to inform hotel to reserve the parking space when you go out). Everybody, regardless you are going to onsen or not, needs to pay 150 yen onsen tax when you check in.

GGuest UserLet's start with the room: The room was incredibly cramped, like a shoebox. There was absolutely no space for a large suitcase, and anyone weighing over 80kg would find it difficult to even turn around. This was completely inconsistent with the 20.9 square meters advertised on Ctrip. Regarding the hotel's price: I paid a price that could afford a stay at a Banyan Tree resort in China, but what I got felt more like a school dormitory. The standard was far below 3-star, akin to a budget motel. I booked a twin room, only to be informed it was for single occupancy. To add a 15-year-old child, they demanded an absurd extra charge of 16,300 JPY – a complete rip-off! There are many other hotel options available right outside Hakodate Station. This place is genuinely a scam. The front desk staff were also unprofessional; they even tried to overcharge us for breakfast. Finally, the facilities: Bottled drinking water was not provided in the room. Guests had to take a communal carafe to another floor to get water. There was a dryer available, but it was pay-per-use and didn't seem cheap. In summary, I will absolutely never stay here again when visiting Hakodate, nor would I recommend it to other Chinese travelers.

GGuest UserHakodate Kokusai Hotel is an established hotel. While it has been recently renovated, and the lobby and public areas are bright and modern, there's a huge disparity in the condition and age between different parts of the hotel and room types. Rooms in the main building are noticeably newer, whereas those in the West Wing feel quite dated, almost from another era. My visit coincided with a Japanese holiday, so hotel prices had soared. I ended up paying main building rates for a room in the West Wing. While the room was passably clean, a distinct dusty smell lingered in the air. The facilities were outdated and inconvenient to use, and the room itself was quite cramped. Overall, my stay was quite disappointing. If only rooms in the West Wing are available, I would strongly recommend choosing a different hotel.

PPietro150The Smile Hotel Premium Hakodate Goryokaku is a typical Japanese business hotel, so although the photos of the rooms may look as though the rooms are reasonably spacious, in reality it’s just a typical business hotel, with minimal space.  While this should not be a big issue for many guests, if you’ve not experienced it before, be ready for a rather space limited experience.  Having said that, the room was quite clean and apart from some scuff marks on the walls, it presented quite well.  It’s also important to note, that since it’s a business hotel the bathroom is quite small, with the bathroom wash basin protruding into the bath tub & shower area and the toilet was clearly designed for significantly smaller users.  Apart from changing towels, providing new slippers and replenishing coffee & tea supplies, there was no servicing of my room over the duration of my 3-night stay.  This is all normal, so be ready for it. The biggest annoyance was that there was no air conditioning available during the period I stayed.  This is hotel policy at this time of the year, and the management clearly think that guests have no right to control the temperature, and therefore enjoy some level of comfort in their room.  Because of this, on my first night the room temperature was approximately 25°c (although I couldn’t turn the air conditioning on, the control unit displayed the actual room temperature), which when combined with the fact that the bed has an arctic standard duvet (or futon - whatever you want to call it), the temperature of the room was NOT conducive to restful sleep.  When I enquired about this the next morning, the front desk clerk bluntly said “open the window”, which of course I had tried to do during the night, but for some reason the handle to open and close the window had been removed, making it impossible to open the window.  The clerk kindly offered to go to my room and open the window (presumably using a special tool) once I had left the room for the day, which he did.  The difference in room temperature was quite noticeable when I returned that the evening, but why this policy in the first place, and the belligerence and attitude of management about guest comfort is beyond me. The other issue was the WiFi, which was patchy and unreliable on my floor.  The only way I could connect any of my devices (2 phones & 1 tablet), was to go to the lobby, connect and then return to my room.  Once a connection had been established, I was able to reconnect whenever I returned to my room, however the strength of the WiFi signal varied considerably when making calls using various apps (e.g., WhatsApp, Line and FB Messenger) and therefore the call stability was unreliable with calls frequently dropping out.  When I mentioned this to front desk staff, they offered to reset the WiFi on my floor, however it made little difference. The above matters (air conditioning and WiFi) are all things that are taken for granted these days and are expected of any reasonable hotel, so to experience the difficulties outlined indicates to me that the hotel management is not really serious about guest satisfaction or comfort. Draw what conclusions you will from this review, but from my perspective, it’s is unlikely I would stay at this hotel again when I next return to Hakodate.
