We have stayed at Footsteps 5 times, twice this year, and it won't be out last, we are already planning our next visit. Footsteps is one of the most relaxing, friendly places we have ever visited. There is nothing too much trouble for David, the owner, and his staff. The roundhouses are cool and comfortable and you soon get used to the composting toilets. The food is always prepared fresh by the chef for breakfast lunch and dinner and he will always accommodate special requests. Give footsteps a go, you won't be disappointed.

We loved staying here. You have all the facilities you can wish for. And they have thought about making it environmentally-friendly in every aspect. This is truly an Eco-lodge. The food is really good. And there are plenty of things to keep you entertained while staying here. The staff and owners are so friendly and helpful. Guests, owners and staff all talk with each other, and it almost feels like a little family. The staff is clearly treated well, not working long hours. And being paid well. We can not recommend it enough!

Footsteps is a beautiful oasis in the forest! We were collected from the airport by the excellent taxi driver, Lamin. It was very much a "soft landing " for our month long trip to Gambia. I loved all the birds in the grounds, the staff there were amazing. A big shout out for Buba, working in the restaurant, always so friendly & helpful. Also really enjoyed the social aspect, chatting to other guests, & being entertained by anecdotes about living in Gambia by David, the English owner. Also Ceku (spelling?!) Was very interesting, telling me about the fruits & vegetables grown in the garden. 12 out of 10 all round.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Footsteps, which really lives up to its green credentials. Sunbird house was spacious and comfortable, though we didn’t test its self-catering capability, preferring to eat with the other guests. The staff were all lovely, friendly and helpful. Unsurprising when you consider a) the collaborative nature of Gambian culture and b) the way they are valued by David, the owner. He employs them for the whole year despite the tourist season not lasting for more than six months. Many have stayed at Footsteps for decades. Difficult to pick any individual out, but we did particularly enjoy our afternoon walk with Lamin, where we saw thirty bird species new to us in under two hours within a short distance from the lodge! A former park warden, he is trying to restart the natural history and cultural museum in Gunjur, but needs funding. It’s a really worthwhile project. Why aren’t tourist companies getting behind this – it’s in their interests. Many guests return to Footsteps – and so might we - and you can’t get a better recommendation than that!

Probably the best testament I can give Footsteps is that I have already booked again for 2026. I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 week stay; there were plenty of activities on offer if I wanted to explore and plenty of opportunities to relax. The roundhouse was really comfortable and spacious and the staff kept it spotlessly clean. I always ate at the lodge, the food was plentiful, delicious, beautifully presented with plenty of choice. The warm Atlantic Ocean was wonderful, the craft and yoga areas were interesting and attractive, the gardens beautiful. All the staff were attentive and helpful, David and Linda delightful hosts who attracted interesting guests. What's not to like ?

I have been coming to this eco lodge for years. It feels like home. The accomodation and restaurant are consistently excellent, but what makes this place the best in the gambia for me is the friendly, happy, helpful staff and management. This in turn creates good vibes and attracts friendly, interesting guests. A win/ win situation for all.

I had fantastic days at Footsteps Lodge. The beautiful surroundings, the delicious food and the friendly and helpful staff made my stay super nice. The contacts with the other guests were also very nice. And above all: the adorable dogs. Love them!

This was our second visit to Footsteps in 2024 and it was just like returning to a big happy family. The owner David is a fantastic engaged host who has realised a vision for Footsteps over the last 20 years or so. There are quite a few places in Southern Gambia that call themselves 'Eco Lodges' but Footsteps actually delivers on this in every aspect of its operation from power generation, water usage, zero plastic and the position Footsteps has created in the local community. Not only that, David's business model ensures the staff are paid fairly and throughout the year even when the lodge is closed and this is reflected in the 'can do' helpful attitude of every person we met during our stay. (They all smile all of the time and obviously really enjoy working there). We will be back of course and look forward again to some lovely chilled evenings sitting under the canopy of trees, eating wonderful food and sharing stories with David, Linda, the staff and other guests - we cant recommend Footsteps highly enough - its a very special place.

Beautiful location and nice employees. Bad roads to get there but the place is so autentic and in the bush, with a nice garden and cosy round houses/bungalows. The employees are so smiling ond helpful. Perfect place for exploring real Gambia
