Family-friendly Hotels in Guatemala City

We loved Barcelo Guatemala City hotel. We arrived around 7 pm at the airport, the shuttle driver was already waiting for us at the arrival area, the hotel had nice, clean van and it’s only 5 minutes from the airport. Fast check in, the hotel is big and clean, our room was on the 8th floor with 2 balconies. We had a king bed and they provided us with 2 bottled water and a tray of fruits. They have a pool but we didn’t have enough time to enjoy it. Breakfast was very nice, they have different guatemalan food choices for breakfast everyday like fajita, plantains, beans. They also have the usual eggs, bread, cheeses, yogurt, cold cuts and lots of fresh fruits. The servers were so kind. We also ate at the restaurants inside the hotel, Kyoto for japanese cuisine and Strikers for american food. We exchanged currency at the front desk everyday since we don’t know how much money we will spend for every tour. We made Barcelo our base hotel and took tours everyday. We did Hobbitenango, Antigua, Chichicastenango, Guatemala city tour and Lake Atitlan with San Juan la Laguna, which we all booked via Viator, we were lucky that most tours it was only the 2 of us. There is a supermarket Paiz just one block from the hotel where we bought drinks and snacks. The area is very safe and the hotel has 24/7 guards at the lobby and gate. We also booked the shuttle going back to the airport, our flight was at 6am and we took the first shuttle at 4 am, plenty of time to get to the airport, security and immigration. The hotel itself is fine, reasonably close to the airport; this is essential due to the horrific traffic during rush hours in this overcrowded city. But Do Not Eat here. Their restaurant is likely to become known as Worst Western Plus soon. With a limited menu, you'd think their cooks could handle the entrees, but that is not the case--they are incompetent and amateurish at best. We attempted to order pizzas but after a few minutes were told we'd have to wait 2 hours since the oven was broken. So we ordered some pasta entrees listed, and were served inaccurate items and very poorly prepared food. Stay here if you want, but eat at one of the nearby chain restaurants instead. The Best Western chain will truly be ashamed if they check out their restaurant on this property.

I called this place to make sure my family members would be able to check in with no issues. As a diamond member I’ve never had issues like this. I booked the reservation and added the person that would be checking in. Not thinking that I needed to put the number of people in the room because I purchased the type of room I needed that accommodated 3 guest. My mother in law and brothers in law were picking up my daughters from the airport the following morning so I had my in laws check in. When they got there to check in the front desk wanted to charge us 35 per person. I specifically paid 15k points that accommodated 4 and it was only 3 guest. It didn’t matter whether it was 2 or 3 on the reservation the points were the same. But there they wanted to charge 35 per person. Then as diamonds we normally get something like breakfast. Well the front desk made sure they told my 76 year old mother in law, no breakfast is allowed for them. I am extremely upset with how they were treated. I don’t care if we purchased the breakfast the fact that they immediately said to them and no breakfast for you all made it seem Like they were allowed to dine. Never using this place ever again.

I only stayed at the hotel briefly due to a late flight arrival and an early flight the next day. However, the room was decent and it was close to the airport which was all that mattered. When I checked out in the early hours of the morning there was no staff to check me out so I just gave the key card to the security.

Advantages: safe location, convenient to the airport, delicious dinner, professional service, comfortable room. Highlights: Breakfast is extremely rich and high quality, comparable to the most luxurious hotels. Disadvantages: The bathtub is shallow and uncomfortable Overall: extremely satisfied, will come again
