First and foremost I do want to say that Dixi the concierge who assisted us checking us in and was dealing with us was lovely couldn't have been more helpful. She really is a credit to the resort. The grounds itself are huge and clearly are very well taken care of and there is an awful lot of care and money being put into this resort. Unfortunately, when we arrived we had to wait for the very large looming gates to be opened by an armed guard. This was pretty disconcerting considering it took a good 40 minutes of driving an extremely bumpy road to get there, so to see such large gates locked and a security guard with a gun immediately put us on edge. Check in was a breeze, however, looking at the beautiful bar and restaurant area thinking we could perhaps enjoy the scenery with a nice glass of wine was immediately shot down when we were told that the restaurant was only open for 1.5hrs for breakfast, lunch and dinner and when we make the reservation for the time we intend to each for each meal, we also need to choose what we will be eating (so for example at breakfast we will need to know what we want for dinner and at dinner what we will want for breakfast the next morning etc.). The room itself was a bit of a hike away from the restaurant and reception area, so we had to drive to it. We were told that we couldn't plug anything in such as a hairdryer due to the solar panels and if I wanted to dry my hair Dixi would get me a battery operated hairdryer. Whilst we waited for her to return we looked at the prices on the food and spa menus and saw that the cost of meals and spa services were literally about double that of everywhere else we had stayed, and we had stayed at five star resorts, so we were pretty dismayed. The room had an exceptionally strong odor of mold and the bed itself was damp. When Dixi returned we explained our discomfort and she immediately tried to rectify it. She offered us the next room but when we went in, candles had been lit all around and a room fragrance had been sprayed in an effort to hide the smell of the dampness. We decided that since we had such a wonderful experience in other resorts that we didn't want to settle for less than that on the last several days of our trip and we thanked Dixi and said we would leave. She did offer us an upgrade but acknowledged that the room would still be the same. When we tried to leave we had to wait several minutes for the armed guard to appear to unpadlock the gate. We had stayed at another resort which was similar in that it was open to the elements with no A/C and in the middle of the rainforest but because it was constantly full with guests there was no smell or dampness to any of their linens as they were constantly being changed. I suspect because the resort is so out of the way and not in a tourist town or close to anything that draws people, they perhaps are not at full capacity all the time which is why the rooms and beds have this smell and damp feel
