Came for Diwali, stayed for the hospitality. As a travelling mother, sometimes you are limited by your child’s schedule. This was not the case at The Durban Hotel. The owner, kitchen staff and driver service ensured we were looked after and accommodated, we went on multiple driving tours arranged by the owner, picked fruit from trees, spoke to locals & heard urban legends & ghost stories. The botanical garden & zoo is just a walk away, which my child loved. After my first visit to guyana, this is now my chosen hotel. It is in a residential street, not too far from the bustling city, giving you a home away from home feel, less clinical and corporate like the big chain hotels. I was well fed, watered, airconditioned and made to feel very welcome. The rooftop terrace has a stunning sunset view, check my video. The owner is a local man, who employs local people, you can see there is deep friendship between the staff, so you are really investing in Guyana when you stay here. They know all their neighbours and we sat and chatted when my child was napping. Definitely would return!

I would consider myself a seasoned traveler. I have been to three continents in the past 2 months for work and this trip was great...except for the hotel. I expected much more for US100 a night. The walls were dirty, the sheets were very thin, the smoke detector was obviously broken, the furniture were water damaged and there were roaches. Our 'free' continental breakfast consisted of two burnt slices of white bread, a one-egg omelette and a slice of cucumber. That was the last time I ate there. The person who checked us in was the cook, which is fine but her customer service was horrible. To top it off, someone who was leaving for the airport at the same time as I was robbed on the pavement infront of the hotel. Please do NOT use this hotel or go at your own risk. P.s. the taxi drivers charged more money to go in this area because crime here is rampant. We found out the hard way.

The Durban Hotel really isn't ready for tourist outside of the West Indies they only cater for people who live in Guyana and the other Island in the West Indies. They advertise continental breakfast ,however you dont get a choice, its whatever they decide to give you that morning and the portions are more for toddlers, also If you have any allergies or intolerance basically that hotel isn't for you and they have no idea how to cater for your needs. The Manager Dennis is very confrontational and doesn't listen to constructive criticism, he can be very rude. The hotel needs a lot of work its very dated, from rooms, carpets and air con the whole decor they dont have phones in the rooms, they knock your door if they want to speak to you and they are very unprofessional. We had dead bugs along the outside of our rooms on the floor and we saw some in our bedroom and in the dinning room. The cooks/ house keepers are very miserable and not approachable and they make you feel that your an inconvenience staying there. The receptionist Melissa and the security guy are the only two nice people there they are extremely kind and very helpful and go above and beyond. Having said that I wouldn't recommend The Durban Hotel at all.

A completely unprofessional check-in with some aggressive individual who hampered any form of coherent dialogue. Our request for an earlier check-in, even when rooms were clearly free and available was only given with reluctance when we were laughably accused of 'loitering' as we sat and waited for a room to be made ready. The most disturbing action though was when this then same individual burst into our room in the middle of the night, saying we had to lock our door for security. I wonder if she trys every room in the middle of the night and harass people who are trying to get a good nights sleep. Lastly, she doubled up as a lousy chef, and needless to say the food was bearly edible. Super greasy omlette anyone, no thanks.
