Radisson Red Gdansk
4.3/557 Reviews
Old Town
We stayed at one of the lofted, split-level rooms, which is great for sharing with travelling friends. The space itself is frankly amazing. However, the how the room is detailed, design-wise, feels a bit awkward. We rarely discuss in these reviews the topic of how a room is furnished, unless there’s a problem. Alas, we’ve stumbled upon a case of this now. To start, the dormer window has gorgeous view of harbour and the surrounding 17th century architecture, but one needs to stand on a chair (that doesn’t exist) to partake in it. The lighting schemes available for guests to customise also do not do the space justice—there’s even harsh white fluorescent lighting, if one is feeling particularly masochistic. The colour scheme chosen for the flooring and walls do not work (e.g., black metal railings a red rug, a red chair, and a rather naff headboard). Furthermore, the suite lacks variation in tactility or texture—perhaps introducing some plants or ceramics can soften this problem? There’s even a luxurious bathtub that’s enclosed by glass, but somehow, it strangely doesn’t feel like a feature that one should feel excited about. We don’t feel too comfortable griping about all this, as this establishment is good value for money. However, if Radisson wants to make more money, they can easily do so by upgrading the décor. Otherwise, it delivers on all the basics: cleanliness throughout, good room temperature controls, noise levels under control, reasonably comfortable bed, good toilet pressure and water temperature controls in the bathroom, sufficient supply of towels, enough electrical outlets to charge your piles of modern junk, workable wi-fi, competent housekeeping, and friendly and helpful staff. Guests here do need to walk around the block outside to get to breakfast and other amenities. The location is central and spectacular.
