Stayed at the Novotel for a week in early Feb 2023 while attending a conference at the nearby Westin. I booked for a really low rate through hotwire. After a pleasant check in I was excited to come into a very large on the 8th floor with a separate seating area and a very large TV. Room was pretty clean although when packing up before check-in I found some items under the bed that did not belong to me. Location was perfect, right across from the Rideau Centre and the Westin/Conference Centre and within a short walk to the Parliament Buildings, Sparks Street and Byward Market. My only compliant is the walls must be paper thin as I could hear the ding of the elevator and conversations in the hall from my room. I was also there a four hour during a power outage in the evening. I assume the outage was unscheduled but there was a lot of confusion and no one at the front desk when it occurred. The hotel shares a building with a DND office which made it confusing leaving the building by the stairs as the stairway lead to a entrance that read ”DND property alarm will sound”, it took awhile to figure out how to exit by the stairs.

I stayed in the cheapest single cell, where the bed just barely fits between the walls.. The mattress was very comfortable. The best place to store your luggage is under the bed. If you have a lot of luggage, shoving it far back under the bed can make it hard to retrieve. You could tie a rope to the bag so you can pull it out. When people are around, there's lots of noise in the cells. My trick for fealing with this is to use a phone with small, comfortable earbuds and an app that makes loud soothing noise -- like a rainstorm. (Many newer phones don't have a socket for earbuds. I bring along an old phone for this; it doesn't need cell service, though you'll need Wi-Fi to download/update a sleep app. I haven't tried iPhones; I use Android, which can be much cheaper.) I'dbbe cautious about wireless earbuds here... if they come out of your ears while you sleep, they could fall off the sides of the bed. (Getting under the bed near the head is not easy!) Wired earbuds are cheap to buy, especially on a site like Amazon with lots of choice (and reviews to help you choose). Maybe it was the size of this large hostel, and the empty halls, that made it feel less welcoming. I like hostels full of life, so I'm not sure I'll be back.

The location of the hotel is amazing, just next to Parliament Hill. The overall feeling is good, and the photos are nice. The lobby is beautifully decorated. The biggest problem is that parking is expensive. Now the hotel can only valet parking, and you can't park by yourself. The price is 60 Canadian dollars per day, including tax. It's really expensive. The room fee is only over 300 Canadian dollars.

Our stay at Sonder Rideau left us with mixed feelings. On the positive side, the hotel's proximity to historical sites made it convenient for our travel plans. However, the absence of on-site restaurants was a significant downside, especially for those looking for a seamless dining experience.
The cleanliness and overall atmosphere of the hotel didn't meet our expectations. We found ourselves missing the comfort and satisfaction that a well-maintained environment can provide during a trip. It's crucial for prospective guests to consider these aspects when choosing accommodations.
In summary, while Sonder Rideau offers a location ideal for history enthusiasts, the lack of dining options and the subpar cleanliness and atmosphere may leave some travelers wanting more from their stay.

The hotel is on the roadside, the door is relatively low-key, pay attention to the room, but not particularly spacious, after all, the location in the center of Ottawa is really good, travel is very convenient. Basically, the surrounding landmark attractions and buildings can be reached on foot.

4.3/5
Excellent
GGuest UserThe service is very good, the room is very large, the hygiene is very clean, the kitchen utensils are very complete, the living room sofa can sleep, the night is very quiet, it is a very good choice.
HHUAJIEThe hotel is very clean, the front desk is very welcoming and the bed is very comfortable. The location is very good, opposite the museum and a bridge to the Capitol Hill, the bridge is very beautiful. The hotel parking is 17.5 yuan after tax for one day, and the car can enter and leave at will during the stay. After check-out, you can stop until 5 pm (but can only stop, can't enter after going out).
GGuest Userreservation for 3 nights, had to change room 3 times; AC did not work in 1st room, was offered a fan (which would just move the hot air around) not really a solution when its 31 degrees outside; had to insist to get room with working AC; was assigned another room for the rest of my stay; to my surprise the next morning was told I had to move again because the room had been rented last night for the next 2 days to someone else; had to get my things out before heading out for the day. Noticed a big chain wrapped around the handles of the front door, only access is through the back door. Thought I would give this place a chance, since I travel through Ottawa/Gatineau every few months; low price is not sufficient to entice me to go back. Good: room and bedding clean / mattress confortable / good water pressure and hot water Bad: Reception staff is confused and disorganized, the woman manning the desk on the 2nd day was curt, very unpleasant to deal with / very minimum breakfast option (i.e. only one type of tea offered, if you don't like Earl Grey, you are out of luck)
GGuest UserThe room was fine. Clean, bed was comfortable. Interesting décor lighting. When we checked in there was a boys hockey team checking in so I worried about our plan for a relaxing spa before dinner. I was right to worry. It was overrun by young teen boys with almost no supervision. We decided to try again after dinner. Our reservation was for 6:30 and we were finally served after 8:30. We saw couples who had arrived close to us get served, pay and leave before we had our main course. When I got our server's attention I asked her if there was a problem with our order and she said Oh no its just very busy, although by this time it was thinning out. Suddenly our order was there, with much apologies about the wait and how busy it was, but the meal was clearly forgotten. I ordered the ribs and fries and it was cold. My wife's seafood pasta had obviously been sitting under a warming light as the mussels on top where dried out. Just not what $28 each should get us. Anyway, it was out anniversary so I didn't cause a fuss, and was hoping for the nice spa later, but we arrived late because of the meal, it closes at 10pm, and there were empty cans and bottles about and while we did enjoy the dip, it was still a little crowded for our liking. The sauna at least was our last experience and it was good. As mentioned, the bed was fine, but then some yahoo with a huge sound system blared it in the parking lot, or adjoining property and woke both of us for a good 5 minutes. Overall, I would say, not too happy with the visit. Sorry, got to call it as I see it.
GGuest Userwe stayed there and went to Spa. The hotel and spa were great. Would be nice if there were closer options for dining outside the hotel, but the on site restaurants are very good.
