Gaints Castle Game Reserve Hotels with Wi-Fi

The Cathedral peak hotel is located in the heart of the Drakensberg mountains at about 5,000 feet above sea level. Built over 80 years ago, it is a classic old style ‘grand’ hotel with a shop, many areas for sitting (inside and out) a large outside swimming pool with sun loungers, attractive gardens, a large dining room a crazy golf course, and many other amenities. Small tame bushbuck roam the gardens nibbling flowers! There is even a beautiful chapel where many couples had been married returning again after many years! Our room was essentially half a thatched cottage with a comfortable double bed, wardrobe, sofa, desk and chairs together with a big bathroom with a bath and shower. There was a also a terrace to sit outside and enjoy the mountain views. Each day there is a programme of activities form guided walks to horse-riding to bird watching which you can sign up for. We also went walking ourselves using the well marked and signposted patch – notably the 35 minute walk to the Doreen Falls where I swam in the plunge pool. It is a gorgeous place right in the heart of the mountains with great views and the ability to walk right from the hotel. In five days our car just stayed in the car park! However although service was attentive and courteous (coffee free at 10 am and tea on the terrace at 3pm!) we found the food a bit ‘institutional’. There was plenty of choice – but it was often served from large dishes of food and the filter coffee (from the urn in particular) often tasted a bit lukewarm. However this is a superb hotel and a memorable experience.
