Was walking along the Cleveland way and came across this little gem of a place ,the staff was very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble .we had a glass of white wine and a pint of grand central ,throughly enjoyed our stay so much we went back the next day and had a pizza which we throughly enjoyed .whilst we was there we couldn’t help but notice the staff entertaining a group of kids with toasted marshmallow brilliant

My recent vist was excellent from start to finish. Staff couldn't have done any more. Customer Service ther is an example that other hotels should mirror. I definitely will revisit.

An amazing place to stay. The location is fabulous - right in the bay. The hostel was spotless which is no mean feat given the testing weather conditions too this week! We enjoyed as a family of four - the accommodation is comfortable and very welcoming. We stayed in the Crows Nest which is a newer building located above the main hostel. It was very comfortable, rooms were quiet and well appointed. A perfect weekend break. Advice - pack light, bring your splashers to walk along the beach and enjoy all the hostel has to offer (inc the delicious cakes and breakfast!)

Arriving here in the dark felt a bit intimidating for me travelling alone with my two girls, but what an adventure! We walked in the pitch black down the steep hill with our wheely cases, but soon there were cosy lights and such a warm welcoming! It’s not a normal hostel, it feels well worth the effort to be there. There are loads of steps and staying there makes you fitter! Me and my girls loved playing games in the bar after having a fantastic day out in Whitby. The communal kitchen is snug but there are several sinks, fridges and cookers, everything is well thought out. My girls asked if we could go back in the summer when the weather is better, so one day we’ll do that! The real gem about this place is the wonderful woman who work there- such good hosts.

We've just spent four nights at this hostel and really enjoyed it! The hostel itself is really quirky and has a lot of character, with information boards all over the place (even in the toilets!) and all the rooms have their own names as well. The bar/restaurant area is really nice and is open to the public as well as to residents. There is a good selection of cakes / hot drinks for the afternoon, and the evening menu is different to the usual YHA menu as well with a few more options. The bar does get busy but they open up the breakfast area as an overflow. There are also a set of games you can rent for a £10 deposit. The kitchen is attached to the bar and is quite small so don't bring more food than you need. Breakfast was also good, a very standard YHA breakfast which was fine by us! The room we were in was, let's say, very cosy! But it had all the basics and the toilets were within a reasonable distance as well. The walls were a little thin so bring earplugs / headphones if you have them. We've had a great time and would certainly come back if we ever return to the area!

A weekend walking trip for 3 mid forties gents. Lovely hostel, cafe/bar, breakfast and location - The beach is fantastic for rock pooling and birdwatching. The staff are very friendly and helpful. However as mentioned on previous reviews, if its a good nights sleep you are after forget it. I have never known sound to travel throughout a building like it. Residents chatting till 2am then starting again 5am. Kids Squealing till 11pm, Fans going off when walking past the shower, toilets flushing, doors slamming. All this on top of the obligatory rude guests shouting and singing or banging on the door trying to get back in. (there is always one!) It is a noise box. It's a shame because its lovely and I will come back with the family as they would love it. Just wish the noise levels were policed a bit better.

Excellent location & everything was as expected for YHA accommodation. Comfortable & convenient with very friendly helpful staff. Our second visit here. If you’re not going with children, I would recommend visiting during term time!!!

Booked a last minute weekend by the sea. The bar area is very cosy with a real fire. The bar is well stocked and reasonably price. We ate a meal from the bar the first night, it was nice enough and reasonably priced. The second night we cooked ourselves, the kitchen was well equipped and spotless. The staff are a credit to the hostel, very helpful and friendly. The room and facilities were clean and warm. It’s a lovely (recommend wellies or walking boots) walk across the beach to Robin Hood’s Bay. The road from the car park is steep and dark, you need a torch . The steps to and from the Crows Nest rooms are very steep. I would say that this hostel isn’t suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

Hidden gem, if you only visit one YHA youth hostel ever then it's got to be this one. It's virtually on the beach and serves food in the bar area. There's a well equipped guest kitchen for self catering. 2 things to note - both times I've stayed I've been in a private family room in a building called the crows nest - which is brilliant (with 77 steps to the entrance). The second thing is that parking can be tight at busy times and it's a brisk walk down the hill to the actual hostel - which is fine aside from remembering that you're going to have to lug everything back up the hill at the end 🤦‍♀️
