We were looking for a place to escape the urban pace and ongoing home renovations. We chose this lovely retreat and we are glad we did. It is about a 3 hour drive from Atlanta, just right for us. The grounds are lovely and the welcome lodge had a downhome mountain feel. We immediately felt at home. We stayed in the Woodward House and upgraded to the Hummingbird Suite. It was nicely appointed with a gas log fireplace, old school coffee pot, nice shower/tub with skylight and a nice jacuzzi. After unpacking we were tired and ready to relax. We ordered "take out" from the only restaurant on the property (Seasons). We were stunned by the small portion sizes and high prices for the entrees. I ordered the scallops and received three of them for a price of $38.00. They threw in a little spinach and called it an entree. Very disappointing because it was overpriced and we were hungry. Thankfully, we brought along some of our own snacks. The grounds are lovely with cultivated and wild flowers blooming everywhere. There is a small lake (30 acres) with kayaks and a dock. There are religious icons everywhere so the owners or previous owners must have been very religious. However, growing up Catholic, it was not offensive. Our second night there we decided to eat at Seasons again. We made a reservation and were promptly seated. I had steak and it was $55.00 (prime Atlanta restaurant prices). The meal with drinks, wine and one dessert was $250 for two people. That is high by any measure and we did not eat another meal there except for breakfast, which is included with the lodging. It is only a few miles to Flat Rock (not much to see there) and Hendersonville, which had a mountain town feel but was surprisingly large. We found mineral and gem museums, miniature golf, coffee shops and enjoyed people watching. The breakfast was included with the room and it was generally pretty good. Served buffet-style with sausage, eggs, bacon, biscuits, yogurt, fruit and typical breakfast fare, it was a nice way to start the day, especially since we did not get a bill for the meal (same restaurant). Overall, a very pleasant stay and lovely people on property. It was charming, quiet and the suite was spacious. We will likely stay here again but bring our own food and coffee maker. The old school drip coffee maker did not make coffee to our standards in the room. However, lovely property with peaceful surroundings. After four nights in the
