We came across Chateau de Vauloge back in 2020 when planning an anniversary trip. Unfortunately, Covid forced a postponement but here we are, four years later, booked into what we expected would be a unique experience. And that it was. As one drives down the lane one is immediately impressed as this stunning 15th century chateau with its moats and turrets comes into view. We were met by Micol, the onsite manager / owner. Micol’s family purchased the chateau in 1990, restoring it to this impressive lodging. We had chosen the Casanova room in the turret on the second floor. A unique and beautiful ‘round’ room with wonderful views through the somewhat small windows. The only note of caution are the 55 steps to reach the second floor – there is no lift. The large bathroom includes a tub in addition to a shower. Breakfast is quite something, served in a beautiful dining hall accentuated with candles and fresh flowers. Along with breads, croissants, and jams there is cereal, yoghurt, lots of fresh fruit, tomatoes, olives and then a selection of cheese and meat, as well as salmon. Eggs of course from the chickens here at the chateau. The chateau has a large pool along with considerable gardens. Is there much to do in the area? Perhaps not but the countryside and quaint villages are pretty. That said there really is no reason to leave this beautiful, restful property. Dinner is served by arrangement which we did one night. We enjoyed a wonderful four course meal prepared and served to us by Micol (again served with candlelight and fresh flowers) accompanied by wine. At 70 euros each the meal was excellent – both the quality of the food and also the ambiance of enjoying dinner in a chateau dating back to the 1400s. For our other evening meals Micol recommended a somewhat informal restaurant La Cabane, more or less 15 minutes away which we enjoyed so much we returned a second evening. We were hoping Chateau de Vauloge was going to be a special experience and it lived up to everything we were hoping for – tranquil, peaceful, unique, historical, beautifully restored in spectacular grounds with excellent, friendly service and memorable meals, served with a touch of class. If you are in the area don’t miss the opportunity to stay at Chateau de Vauloge, a very unique and special lodging.
