Seldom have I encountered such a frosty reception! I wouldn’t call it a “welcome”. The maitre d’ was obviously irritated by my request to sit on a terrace table for pre dinner drinks, despite assuring her we would be leaving before she needed the table back. Apart from three families dining on larger tables, the terrace was empty. The tables were in dire need of refurbishment and the chairs were basic banqueting chairs with no upholstery or cushions. The flagstone entrance to the hotel, once pristine has become a grease laden and stale smelling walkway between kitchens. Sorry to say initial impressions do not in any way resemble the “Country House experience” that your name implies.

Brilliant place. We only live down the road and decided to stay on a birthday Sunday night. What an amazing deal ! Had a superb roast dinner, the cheese board was passable but we asked for more crackers. Brilliant staff and the room was amazing. Comfy huge bed ! Double jacuzzi bath was great though a wee bit loud. Great breakfast in the morning. We will be back soon !

I have to agree with Graham B. Anna, the General Manager, does not return calls. I was told she would call back "very soon". Still waiting after a week. The hotel charged us for two rooms and, while the duty managers who picked up the phone when I called (three times) last week were polite and comprehending, they have been unable to persuade the General Manager to act with basic professionalism let alone customer service.

What a disappointment!!! Went following a recommendation from a friend Family party of 18 - pre ordered food and paid £180 deposit as demanded. Waited nearly an hour for food to arrive. Two orders no where near as per online description. One very dried up - sent back. Mine - Barnsley Chop. Extremely fatty, warm, not hot, asparagus very overcooked. NO presentation - chips just slung on plate. No warm welcome from any of the staff - more like frightened rabbits! Very young waitresses- not their fault but obviously not trained to deal with problems. Approach from management when made a complaint cold and aloof - called my daughter "hun" - NOT a good idea! Small token amount knocked off as a gesture. Had this had been handled properly we would have stayed for more drinks and dessert - so their loss. NEVER setting foot in here again! TRAIN YOUR STAFF PROPERLY - ITS NOT FAIR ON THEM TO FACE IRATE CUSTOMERS BECAUSE OF YOUR SHORT COMINGS.

Had a meal with family in the pub on Saturday 27th. Originally entered , and left via a side door through the main restaurant, and on leaving my wife tripped on a low unmarked step, falling on the stone patio area, witnessed by other guests. Gave our details to Anna the duty manager and told we would get a call back. A recent previous review stated "Anna the Manageress is outstanding and very attentive always on the go and always available". Unfortunately this was not our experience. Wife damaged her knee, and has since suffered severe back pain, had x-rays and is on strong medication. Sent photos of knee damage to the hotel. No acknowledgment or return email from the hotel. Disgraceful. 5 days later I called the hotel, and eventually got through to a duty manager who said Anna was away and that we would, at a minimum, get an email. Still waiting. Our daughter in law also visited at a later date and took photos. The hotel has now locked the door, and placed a notice re-directing clients. Clearly, the open door and low step were a health and safety hazard. To date, NO call back or email, which, as a minimum, we would have expected. In short, un-attentive, disappointing experience, and so far, no indication the incident was even recognised and recorded in an incident report. Waiting for formal communication from the hotel but not holding our breath.

Stayed many times, whilst everything was as good as usual... I think customer service and staff interactions and that stuff was a lot better! What a great team you have! Utterly chatty and friendly, yes it was a quiet night and morning but fabulous service, lots of personal chat and really really made my stay, especially for a lone traveller. Now, also to note, officially kitchen closed orders at 8.45. I was late arriving. So At 8.55 was charging to the restaurant, and the staff had realised I hadn't yet been and were actually on their way to call to the room to see what I wanted!! It doesn't get better than that! Room 10 the attic room was cool, quiet and wonderful! Grounds and building as ever were immaculate. It's a ten from Len here!!!

Had a very average lunch here. One of our party was vegan and there was absolutely nothing on the menu -the staff seemed incapable of being able to veganise anything ( chips had to be cooked in meat fat the potatoes had to have butter on etc) and ended up with a salad comprised almost entirely of lettuce with a few strips of roasted pepper and originally charged the same as the poached salmon and new potato salad. No effort at all.

Smashing venue for any occasion. The Staff are lovely. Anna the Manageress is outstanding and very attentive always on the go and always available. She recognised us from our last visit which was sweet. Great service, great food. Lovely gardens . They have house Martins nesting in their eves , lovely to watch them fly in and out of their nests, feeding the young .
