Red Roof Inn Plus & Suites Erie

First of a yellow lab greeted us at the checkin counter. This is an economy hotel so I give it 5 stars, but I thought about it. With no pet fee, clean and friendly , we plan to stay again next time we visit Erie. In downtown area. Enjoy your stay there.

I like to review every hotel I stay at and the Red Roof staff asked me to review when I was checking out, so here it is. My apologies for the length; these are never short. Location: The Red Roof is in a great location if you're doing something in downtown Erie. It's located on W 18th St, right between Peach and State St. You're 15 minutes from I-90, a quick 5 minutes from Lake Erie, and within a few blocks of restaurants, shops, and activities. I've read other reviews that it's in a strange neighbourhood and I can understand that. However, I walked around both nights and, while there was some feeling of isolation and quiet, I never felt unsafe. To the north are "professional buildings" and offices. To the west is a large parking lot and more businesses. I don't remember what's to the south. To the east is an empty lot that used to be a restaurant, I believe. The whole area is very open and well lit, which I like better than "what's hiding behind that dark corner?" Hotel Layout: The motel has an unique layout. The lobby is on W 18th at the top of a small ramp. It's spacious with the check-in desk to your right. The lobby itself is comfortable with various places to sit, along with a coffee machine and vending machines for guests. The entire building is a bit of an "L" shape. The rooms are attached to the lobby as that part of the building goes north/south, whereas the lobby is more east/west. It's an external hotel and all rooms are situated on four floors with room doors facing east or west. The east side also has a nice little courtyard to relax or take your animals (I'd imagine?). The north and west sides are the majority of parking (a handful of spots on the east side). All parking is accessible by either Peach Street or W18th. Here's where it gets tricky. All of the first-floor rooms are easy to get to from the ground. You would just drive up to your room and you're set. However, if you have a room on floors two-through-four, you have to use your room key to open another door first. Those doors bring you either a stairwell (north side) or an inside small hallway (east/west sides). From either of those, you go up the stairs, and then out a door onto your floor outside. Basically, you go inside to go outside. I can't speak for the third or fourth floors, but the second floor's walkway between the rooms and the concrete railing looks like it had seen better days. There was nothing unsafe about it but it was worth noting. To get into your room, you tap the card on the lock and green light (or yellow light) appears to open the door. The Room: It was a beautiful place. The room was clean, comfortable, and spacious. It had a desk, large TV/stand, microwave, fridge/freezer (biggest one I've seen in a hotel), drawers, etc. There was one minor issue with the desk but that was told to staff upon checkout as it didn't affect me. It's a very descent property especially for the rate we got ($115 two twin beds). I struggled a bit with an a/c, as it was way too strong for the room size even at the lowest fan settings. But overall we had a good experience, except one thing - they failed to make our room but when we complained it turned out, that the cleaner marked it as completed. Yet, at least it was very clean and furniture is in the good condition.
