We stayed in room 209. The hotel is beautifully done out inside the decor was modern and absolutely spotless. The location is set by a beautiful little stream. The only issue was the toilet in our room dripped all night and the breakfast buffet was not good. The staff were amazing at breakfast I just felt like the layout didn’t work at all…. When my husband got up there was no eggs and when I went for my food there was no hash browns or glasses for drinks. Overall I would return 100% as the issues were minor compare to the pros of the hotel.

I have been visiting The Trout for at least 20 years. It has however appeared a little “tired” on recent visits. On arriving there were no staff at reception; simply a sign saying proceed to the bar for help! This I did and waited five minutes for somebody to appear; this is not very welcoming. Our executive room (no. 222) at nearly £200 per night unfortunately had the large kitchen extractor fan unit running directly outside the window and this was intrusively loud. Both mornings at 6/6.15am, I was woken by the sound of it switching on; it also remains on all day long. At the other side of the room, there was an intermittent noise that I believed to be a washing unit (?) somewhere in the hotel ground floor. This is unacceptable in an executive room and in my opinion, the room should be offered at a considerably reduced rate and only with the full knowledge of the paying guest. Our evening meals were delicious however the service was slightly slow…not a major issue but worth noting. Our cooked breakfast was tasty and the perfect portion sizes for my wife and I. I do suspect however, that some guests may well comment that the breakfasts now appear smaller than in previous years. I shall return to The Trout as it holds a lot of sentimental and happy family memories for me and I sincerely want it to be successful. I shall however most definitely avoid room 222.

Great hotel, great food & location. The reason I have give 3 stars is unfortunately the service has gone down hill. Big time! We booked an evening meal and sat down on time. I got that tired of waiting just for a drink, about 20 minutes, so I decided to go to the bar myself. No body was serving and I waited a least 10 minutes. We were just about to walk out and go somewhere else. Then we got served. We were in the restaurant for nearly 2 hours and all we had was one meal each and one drink. I daren’t ask for another drink. We also asked for extra gravy and it never turned up. Then breakfast next morning. It was very busy and they only had one guy on. He was taking orders, serving & clearing tables. He was running around like a man possessed. My wife felt that sorry for him that she was going to start clearing the tables for him. Then the girl on reception turned up and started helping him. Nothing on the buffet was getting replenished and a lot of people were asking for basics, like juices, fruit & yogurts. People were also having to clear & set their own tables. It was a bit of a shambles really. When we checked out we did complain at reception and she just shrugged it off and said she would tell the manager. We have stayed here 6 times over the years. But I don’t think we will be staying again.

Well what an experience that was! We received a voucher for Christmas that due to one thing and another we couldn’t use until today! The service was AWFUL! This was from the moment we walked in until we paid and walked out! We stood at the bar for 10 mins without acknowledgement or eye contact when we first walked in! We then were seated and another wait before our drinks order was taken which was done at the same time as our food( thank goodness) our starters arrived and have to say were lovely! We had to ask again for the jug of water! We finished said starters and the staff were about to take the plate and another table enquired so he put them back down! Mains took another 30 mins to arrive and other patrons were cancelling drinks orders and leaving ! We weren’t asked if our food was ok and I had to ask for Mayonaise as wasn’t offered it! We would have had coffee and desserts but again not offered menus so we paid and left very disappointed after a well anticipated meal when my husband said the food was good but the service was awful he was told it’s due to being short staffed sorry not a valid excuse for a well established establishment

We have stayed at The Trout many times over the years and even remember the horrible two floods that decimated The Trout and most businesses in Cockermouth. We still love to visit the hotel and find the staff very friendly and welcoming, our last visit was no exception. We enjoyed our breakfast and evening meals and drinks/coffees in the very comfortable lounge areas. We’re planning another visit to coincide with the Cockermouth Christmas fayre December.

Myself and my friend booked a table for food and drinks (Friday fizz) and it was perfect. I had steak pie and chips, my friend had lasagne and it was delicious ! The staff were amazing, polite and professional. We then went for drinks in The Terrace bar which is another part of the hotel where there was a singer on and the atmosphere was great as were the bar staff. A fabulous gem of a place. We will most definitely be back.

Myself and my family were recommended the Trout for their food and wow the were right. I had lasagne and my husband steak out. The portions were just right and the homemade chips were beautiful. Staff were all lovely and polite. Will definitely return.
