Property Description
In the heart of the historic centre of this Alentejo town, classified by UNESCO as a world heritage site, this hotel, the result of the refurbishment of the former Convento de São Paulo, has as its theme the Portuguese military fortifications scattered around the world. Taking advantage of the original configuration of the building - which after the extinction of the religious orders ceased to be a convent and functioned as a military court, barracks and prison - this hotel has 79 rooms (including seven two-storey suites with mezzanines), two restaurants offering regional cuisine dedicated to local flavours, a bar, an outdoor swimming pool, a spa with massage rooms, a hydromassage pool, a Turkish bath, a sauna and an indoor swimming pool and, finally, the cloister, once again green and tidy, two meeting rooms and an events hall, set up in the former church, ideal for weddings and baptisms. To get to know Elvas, as well as strolling through the streets of the historic centre, we suggest a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Elvas Military Museum, Forte da Graça and Forte de Santa Luzia, the church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção or the old Cathedral, near the Casa da Cultura. But there's also the castle, the 17th-century walls or the octagonal Domínicas church and the pillory area. Nearby, you can visit the Museum of the Christs in Sousel, or go to the cities of Mérida or Cáceres, both of which are also classified by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. The Vila Galé Collection Elvas Historic Hotel, Conference & SPA is the first hotel in Portugal to be completed under Revive, the public programme for the concession and restoration of historic heritage.

Stayed with family here in a second booked room in this hotel. Outdoor pool was so inviting as the temp reached 35 deg in early October. Staff were super efficient and the prices for a late check out were very reasonable. The hotel itself is located within the walks of the town with ample outdoor parking just outside. Highly recommend a stay here.

BIEN EN GENERAL FUE NUESTRO 4º HOTEL DEL VIAJE Y NOS GUSTARON MÁS LOS ANTERIORES POR LO QUE QUIZÁS NO SEAMOS MUY OBJETIVOS. ALGO TRISTE LA HABITACIÓN, CON POCA LUZ Y LOS COLCHONES ALGO DUROS, AUNQUE MUY AMPLIA. BUEN DESAYUNO PERO EL CAFÉ MEJORABLE.

Nestled within the walls of the fortified city of Elvas, this hotel once served as the Saint Paul Convent. Its conversion to Vila Gale Collection Elvas brings 18th century architecture into the modern era and utilizes vast interior open spaces for both public and private areas. Although our suite was very spacious and had wonderful views of the nearby ramparts from all the rooms, it was surprisingly sparsely furnished and with extremely uncomfortable seating options. Our interactions with the staff were always pleasant and helpful. We opted to include breakfasts and were not disappointed. We even went for dinner in the hotel and were delighted with our seafood mains of Sea Bass and Golden Cod fillets and of course a nice bottle of Val Moreira Reserve White.

The reception is good but the decor is weird. The hallways are peopled by spooky mannequins lurking in corners in different military uniforms. The central cloister courtyard is lovely. The room was very spacious. The en-suite was not. The bed was very hard and a sweet housekeeper arrived with a topper to make it more comfortable when I complained. The room was about 18° so I put the heating on but it cut out half way through the night and I woke at 6am too cold to get back to sleep. No amount of button pressing would make the heater come back on. Breakfast was good, hot food cooked to order not dried out under lamps or in chafing dishes - except for the coffee which was dire dish water. I can’t comment on the dining room as we ate out in more genial surroundings. I can’t comment on the spa as we didn’t use it. I just feel that it could be so much better.

This was our second visit to this hotel and it really is a lovely place. The building is a converted convent and the convention has been beautifully done. Breakfast is excellent with plenty of choice in a buffet style. The staff are friendly and attentive, especially the breakfast and Bar staff. We first visited not long after the hotel had opened and it was noticeably busier on this visit. Elvas is a lovely place to wander round. The fortifications, castle, small ally ways, churches, gardens & museums are a joy to explore. It also has some great quality restaurants. Would highly recommend Adega Regional, Recanto de São Paulo & especially Acontece. There is plenty of free parking around the hotel if you are traveling by car and it makes a great base for exploring the area, even nipping over the border into Spain. Look forward to returning again.

The hotel is located in a beautiful old building with great quality renovation. Our family room 302 was udge but the bathroom was small in comparison. The two pools are not too much during summer because some persons seem to stay there most of the day. Gym opens from 7 am to 10 pm. Pools open from 9 am to 8 pm. Please note that gym, hamman, sauna and jacuzzi are forbidden to kids under 16. There are plenty of free parking places nearby but you may want to pay for the indoor covered parking. Service was consistent with what you should expect from such hotel. The Air Conditioning was very powerful and worked well.

I spent 1 night at the Vila Gale Collection Elvas in mid-April. Staff were wonderfully helpful and the location was perfect for exploring Elvas and the surrounding forts. My specious room was comfortable and well-appointed and the hotel’s spa was well worth visiting. In addition, this former convent has a lovely cloister. I appreciated the egg station at the breakfast buffet – my omelet was delicious! – though I was surprised that there was no cream for coffee. There wasn’t even any whole milk, only skim or low-fat milk! Just a small complaint.
