My girlfriend and I were looking for a convenient weekend getaway from Athens and stumbled upon this hotel on "smallhotelsingreece.com." The drive took about 3 hours from the center of Athens, and we arrived at night on Friday. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Marina and Stefanos, who were equal parts gracious and welcoming. They greeted us with big smiles, and a glass of cold lemonade. They told us about Evia, and its suffering over the last year, and about how difficult it has been psychologically and business-wise. Marina spoke stoically about planting trees at a time when no one is thinking of progress; of stubbornly taking care of the land at a time when many have fled. The property itself is quaint, set high on a hill overlooking the sea and olive trees. The town itself is small, with a handful of restaurants and nearby villages that are nice. Every morning, we were served a lovely breakfast of homemade fares (the usual suspects) alongside fresh coffee and a juice. The hosts were generous with advice (nearby waterfalls, restaurants, hikes) and warm in their hospitality. Eleonas is the classic inn of Greek folklore, the mountain home, the mythic escape — to the looking glass between nature and sea, as if the two were never distinct.
