While the lounging and dining area was large and bright, the kitchen was tiny and poorly laid out. There was no way to have two groups prepare a meal at the same time, the sink was in the way of the fridge and the conduction cooktop did not respond to touch. One of the three days, we had no towels to wash or dry our dishes ( which were hand washed by the guests, poorly!) The bed was hard, lumpy and saggy. The bathrooms were adequately clean, but the air circulation was very poor if the door was shut between users as it often was. Their smells persisted for at least ten minutes after they left the room. The hallways and dining area was extremely echo-y. There was no way to carry on two conversations in the room at the same time. We arrived at the usual time guests would arrive - 2 other parties arrived while we were waiting - we had to ring up an employee who was off site and had to wait quite some time. We had the feeling this place was all about the owner making money and nothing else. They charge 5,000 ISK for one load of laundry! Our smaller room did not have information about the services in town but the larger rooms had all the usual information one would expect to welcome you into a new town. Despite the good breeze outside, the windows did not open enough to let enough air flow through to ventilate the rooms. We decided to leave the guesthouse one day early and forfeit the cost to get new accommodations.

Cabin No. 2, 701 Eiðar, near Egilsstadir. 12 miles and 20 minutes by car north of Egilsstadir. It is one of five cabins, modern but not brand new; soundproofing is minimal and that was annoying as other guests were inconsiderate and kept slamming doors. As I write this there is a baby crying in a nearby cabin. The cabins have a beautiful outlook to the back so I cleaned the windows on the outside. The window in the front door is frosted so no view at all. The kitchen is minimalist, only the basics are provided. Whilst the floor covering is made of plastic, it’s actually a fairly realistic version of oak so looks good. The owner was helpful when I phoned with a query; the cleaner was also considerate and was very helpful when I spoke with her. There isn’t a TV in the room – you have to create your own entertainment.

We saw some bad reviews for this place but when we got here we’re pleased with our clean room with all we needed for a good nights sleep. Yes the curtains are not room darkening but we carry eye covers as many hotels with room darkening are not truly dark when closed. There is no TV but they fo not list having one and yes it is a dorm during the school year, great idea!! If you have heavy luggage make sure to ask for or reserve a room on the second floor which is right off elevator. The first is down a half flight. We did fine going down with two carry ons. If these things bother you, plan on spending close to double on hotels in this area. Otherwise, this will meet your needs of a good nights sleep.

The rooms were very clean and comfortable. Great newer windows, roomy and warm. Staff did a great job and was very accommodating. We had dinner at the hotel and were very pleased with our choices. Nice breakfast buffet with a great selection.

Next to the hotel is a cattle pen on a farm. Many comments say that there is a smell in the air, but it is at the gate and there is no smell inside the hotel. And it’s interesting to see animals in the bullpen. Behind the hotel is a beautiful lake, and the scenery is good for a walk after dinner. It's just that most of the trees outside the window of the lake view room are branches, and only a small corner of the lake view can be seen. The hotel’s restaurant is good and worth eating. It is a creative dish, and it is the most decent restaurant dish on the way around the island in Iceland. The hotel spa is not expensive, and there are discounts for in-house guests, but it is just a small pool, which I personally think is of little significance. If you stay around the island for one night, this hotel is recommended.
