Location is good for Veenhuizen (Which is small). Good parking in front of the hotel. Nice vibe in the hotel. On sundays they organize a paid guide. It is dog friendly and you can walk in Veenhuizen en enough places to walk the dog. Some tables and chairs for people to lounge and a great restaurant onside! Rooms are quiet big and the bathroom has the size of the room. All well however no coffee machine in the room (waterboiler and coffee). Breakfast was simple and good. Just only one coffee machine so you could have to wait for your coffee.

Went for a UNESCO heritage trip with my Dutch husband. His family lives in the area and recommended this hotel. It's a very interesting location, both the village, the area as the hotel itself. Many things to see and do if local history, walking and cycling are your thing(s). Communication was basic but friendly. Easy to find and beautiful, spacious reception area. Nice range of books about the area and some locally made products. Room was a bit on the old-fashioned side, but a good size and comfortable. History aside, I was also here for some peace and quiet, which is also how the hotel markets itself. This, however, was not achieved. The goings-on and noises and activities were just relentless and rather surprising for such a location. Noise never stopped, which, at least for us, made true relaxation impossible: There's a short increase in traffic (I assume around the time the prison staff starts and night staff leaves), which, if you have a room facing the street, might wake you up, as most cars speed and many have loud music on, which feels entirely out of place. There was a very present continuous hum in our room, we couldn't find the source, maybe a ventilation system or a big cooler somewhere. We were told there's an 11pm curfew, but people stayed on the patio/terrace long after that, laughing and shouting and talking louder and louder, without staff saying anything. My husband asked the restaurant staff to say something, but they replied with something about not wanting to disturb their guests’ fun and it not being their place because there was no management. Wow. Mowing the lawn with an industrial big mower and loudly trimming hedges at 9pm directly adjacent to the terrace, with ear splitting noise and a lot of dust, is just not done. Another guest suggested that it might be for the adjacent surgical clinic, not the hotel. Can't imagine that being the case, but if it is, the hotel should have a conversation with them. Speaking of the surgical clinic: this building was part of the former hospital complex so I assumed it was part of the hotel as well, but somebody told me it wasn't. Either way, it's noisy and it's 24/7 - our first evening stroll through the patch of woodland at the back of the hotel was our last, because the noise of the clinic could be heard throughout, meaning that even in the middle of the night, no quiet can be found. At the other side of that small patch of trees, there are workshops of the prison. During the day, there's a significant amount of noise coming from their ventilation shafts. At least that stops around 4pm, but I'm sure the noise level can be easily decreased with some adjustments or upgrades (I think the same applies to the clinic). There are many deliveries with big trucks. Deliveries are done right through the terrace. So we were sitting outside, as were a few other guests, and had to move inside or walk away a few times because of the insane noise of trucks parked literally two metres from the table

The hotel connects 3 historic buildings through a modern space, which houses the reception and restaurant, among other things. We stayed in this hotel with some friends. We got a large, high, clean room on the ground floor with a very large bathroom. The room can also be used by the disabled, but the shower would be better used with some extra supports. It was a bit cold, but there is an extra blanket. The breakfast was tasty and there was enough variety. You have to cut your bread and cheese etc. yourself. There is only one point to make your own coffee (bean coffee). The hotel tries to operate as sustainably as possible and avoid waste. The front desk staff was friendly. There are rental bicycles to explore Veenhuizen and the surrounding area. I will review the restaurant separately.

The hotel is located in a beautiful, quiet place, full of history. In the area there is of course the museum and the beautiful peat area. Reception fine. We had a beautiful, spacious room where all kinds of old elements were still preserved. Everything neatly clean and a nice bed. The breakfast was fine, just a pity that it was not replenished and we had no yogurt or juice. That wouldn't be so bad, but we were treated very unfriendly by the lady who had to arrange breakfast: a shame.

It's nice how the three service residences are connected by a glass corridor. The comfortable hotel rooms are located in the staff residences. In the hallway the reception, lounge and dining room. Everything looks very neat. In the restaurant you can choose from a menu of 3, 4 or 5 courses. Clear attention has also been paid to this, both in terms of taste and layout. We also enjoyed an excellent breakfast there. The location is of course also unique.

We slept one night in the deluxe room. The welcome is very friendly, and we were pleasantly surprised by the enormous space in the room. The hotel and the room have an unconventional layout, but that is what gives it its charm. Excellent breakfast, not very extensive but certainly sufficient. It is nice to see that local products are used for breakfast and with the toiletries in the room and that the use of plastic and (food) waste is avoided. Also pleasant and friendly employees at breakfast. The stairs to the room are a bit difficult to walk on and it is very noisy (outside noises) directly under the roof, but that is part of such a building. We had a very comfortable stay for a friendly price and it was the perfect quiet base for us after a major event in the area. See you next year!

Bitter en Zoet is a beautiful hotel with spacious rooms in a number of buildings with interesting history. You need to be able-bodied to reach the top floor, the stairs are really steep. Spacious bright room and nice bathroom. Friendly welcome at the reception, you promise your welcome. This is less the case at breakfast, not very customer friendly (items are not replenished, tables are not cleared so that latecomers are assigned less pleasant places, etc.). Breakfast was extensive and with delicious bread, tasty tea, etc. Centrally located, so museum and other attractions are easily accessible.

Spent two days with colleagues at Bitter & Zoet in Veenhuizen. It is a special place and a special environment to stay. The hotel room is simple but fine, a plus for the mattress. The breakfast buffet was modest but good, with sufficient choice. The lunches consisted of various salads, sandwiches and a hot dish, it was tasty. Dinner was fine, it was beautifully presented and the food was delicious. During the training day, excellent coffee came from the machine and something tasty was served both in the morning and in the afternoon. I highly recommend Bitter & Zoet if you want to stay in a different environment with colleagues.
