Wow, we got invited to the garden room , yes what a lovely room, no 37, there was someone above , wow they were quite noisy especially at night after 11pm till after 3am not too happy , we spoke to the cleaner (only saw the cleaner no one else) she said they were probably smoking, ha ha sounded like they were having a disco up there , apart from the noise the room was lovely

Terrible experience, everything from arrival was below expectation, awful standards, and not as advertised. My parents have limited mobility, with stairs and long distances being the main concern. Even though they had spoken to the ‘guest house’ the day prior to arrival their room had been moved to a higher floor. With no lift access & no solution offered they were unable to use or even view the room. The hallway apparently doubles up as ‘reception’ and “lounge”. Food was not cleared from plates and the visible kitchen appeared not to be as tidy or clean as one would anticipate. Unfortunately my parents did not think to snap away and are too good willed believing their complaint would be handled and resolved. The customer service has been horrendous, unwilling to provide a contact name and always stating it is ‘with the management’. It has really caused a lot of worry and anxiety to my parents. My dad likes to support small businesses but in this case its an example of where a big corporation wouldn’t treat their guests this way. Plenty of other negative reviews to view- please take heed before you book.

The only positive thing was leaving. I arrived to check in, only to be met with a unclean dinining room/reception. Dirty sheets piled up on the tables, are guests meant to eat there? There was one disgusting blackened banana sitting in the fruit bowl prefectly sums up this place. The young lad couldn't find our booking, so he calls the manager who tells me ********** cancelled my booking?! Was told to leave and phone them, I asked if I would be refunded she said as long as it wasn't done on my end I would. Fine, I left and while friends booked a MUCH nicer place down the street (Edinburgh House Hotel) I phoned ********** who confirmed the booking was still open on there end and was never cancelled, I requested being refunded because I was sent away from this property. They phoned this cesspit who changed their story and said I had cancelled it and wouldn't be refunding me!? The manager lies and changes her story but eventually I managed to get my money back as ********** could see I NEVER cancelled the booking but I'm glad we didn't get to check in because as I mentioned this place and the staff are disgusting and unprofessional. DO NOT BOOK HERE!

Extremely bad service and behavior towards guests. The woman at the reception doesn't not know how to behave with guests. The shower wasn't functioning properly either. We couldn't even take a proper shower. I would NOT recommend this "guest" house if you want a decent customer service.

My teen son and I stayed for two days at the Pilrig Guess House. We enjoyed our stay!!! It was quiet, close to walk to the main street and clean. Also the price was right. We did not buy breakfast since we wanted to try foods from Edinburgh popular restaurants. Overall it was a lovely house charming and clean.

Our guests checked in and there was a strong smell of cooking throughout the accommodation all the way up to the top floor where we were placed which was quite unpleasant, also there was paint peeling from the ceiling over the bed which was damp and looked like the side wall was over boarded with plastic panels to cover more damp which was concerning as the person would of been sleeping right against this. Also the window blind was hanging down from the ceiling and would not stay up which was very intrusive in such a small room with no head space, the TV remote was not working, there was what looked and smelt like human excrement in the waste bin which indicated the room was not cleaned prior to our arrival. There were no towels for the shower which was on the landing that could be accessed by anyone and the lock was difficult to lock. The staff member in charge had no idea what he was doing and was very unhelpful. We checked in at 8pm and checked out at 9pm. We had to find alternative accommodation for the same night elsewhere as this property is simply...unfit for purpose. To add insult to injury, the guest house manager refuses to refund us for the disgusting ordeal we experienced. We are pursing the guest house as a matter of principal via Trading Standards and Consumer Advice Scotland.

I accidentally booked for June instead of July so immediately cancelled so I wouldn't tie up the booking slot for them. I didn't worry about the non-refundable cancellation policy as I checked and my July dates were available. I then contacted the guest house and asked that the booking be transferred. They flatly said no and no refund either. I guess that the lure of making double on the booking was too much to resist. So book at your own peril. If money is the sole object of their existence them maybe they cut corners in other respects too.

Me and my husband stayed at pilrig guest house for 4 days. We stayed in the room designed for 3ppl.Here's a summary of the positives and could be improved aspects; Positives: - Walking distance from the centre of Edinburgh - free onstreet parking - tea coffee facilities and hairdryer - nice hot shower and heating (much needed for the cold climate!) Needs improvement: - instructions advised we need to call at least 72hrs before check in to recieve check in instructions. No one answered the phone and so we had no instructions. This left us very anxious up until arrival. - Not very welcoming, you get your room key and then you're kind of left to it. No niceties or explanation about breakfast etc - Brekky is not included. Continental provided at a charge - we locked our room from the inside at bed time and couldn't unlock it the next morning. We were eventually saved by the house maid who said she'll report it to management. The door was never fixed. We had to sleep with the door unlocked and put our suitcases up against the door every night to prevent anyone coming in! Not great service. No apologies or goodwill gesture for this inconvenience. - no lifts and so if you're up on the top floor (rooms 6,7 and 8 i think), be prepared! - if you're slightly larger than life, the toilet /shower would be a bit of a squeeze. - bed and pillow was uncomfortable for us - from the pics, it looks nicer and modern on the adverts /websites, reality is a bit more basic old fashioned Overall if you're not too fussed about decor, comfort and service, this is a decent place from a convenience perspective. At around £60 I suppose you're getting what you paid for in Edinburgh?!

Choice of affordable accommodation on a busy weekend in Edinburgh was limited so we took a chance on the Pilrig Guesthouse. Our room was up two long flights of dusty stairs, under the eaves and a little grey and grubby, but it didn't matter hugely as all we really needed was a comfortable bed for one night. Unfortunately sleep was hard come by. The bed was a torture machine with several broken springs. I dozed fitfully and spent the next day shaking off a stiff and sore back. We told the cleaner in the morning who took the key from us but she seemed unconcerned. I want to make sure that the message that a better quality replacement bed is needed in room 6 is passed on so spare other travellers our pain.
