The Seven Stars

The Seven Stars, located in Shincliffe village 1.5 miles outside of the magnificent University and Cathedral City of Durham, is a converted 18th century coaching inn. If you like quaint it is a little gem. My wife and I stayed there recently in preference to staying in one of the large plastic palaces that constitute most modern hotel chains. On the ground floor there is a traditional pub lounge and three dining areas, one of which is set up for private dining. The residential area is on the first floor and is accessed by a steep and narrow staircase. Our en suite room was large, clean, warm and comfortable. It was tastefully decorated and there were tea/coffee making facilities as well as free wifi.. All of the staff were welcoming and helpful as were the locals in the bar and restaurant, making for a most conviviable atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed it. There is no carpark but we had no difficulty finding free on street parking. Outside there is a nearby bus stop into town though it is possible to walk into the City centre along the river. We would definitely stay there again.

On arrival for checking , due to staff change over check in didn’t run smoothly, as we were due to attend a private party at 3pm we tried to check in early as advised the previous day we could .(friends did check in after us and didn’t have to pay ) between 2 staff staff on front desk they stated they were available then they weren’t . After 20 minutes we decided to get changed and leave bags in the office .as stated before we were due to attend a party at 3 pm so i decided to try again as wasn’t happy leaving my bag. this time i was successful and still charged early check in and it was 2:45pm. Room was clean and tidy , bed and pillows were really comfy , and had all amenities required. Following morning we went for breakfast and it was a farce , there was only a few people in the restaurant so no mad rush before we got there , there was very little to choose from they were replenishing the cooked breakfast however when they brought food out it was very little so people behind had to wait , looked like only a tin of beans had been opened and a couple of sausages done at a time , there was no orange juice as it ran out , lattes and cappuccinos also ran out took 20 mins to fix and to top it off there was a hair in my fiancés breakfast ( see image attached )

1 night stay in the penthouse for lumiere weekend with friends. Fantastic accommodation close to everything. Gillian was wonderful and really helpful, Balloons and a birthday card were supplied in the room as it was my sisters birthday, really lovely and appreciated. Gillian went out of her way to make us feel welcome and explained everything to us on arrival, even got us into our room early. We stayed Friday night and weren't really bothered by too much noise, although ear plugs are provided as rooms are above the bar. The bar is great, good selection of drinks and they have a stamp card scheme, for residents it's buy 3 get 1 free. Live music on Friday night's, although unfortunately the singer wasn't able to attend due to parking issues with the lumiere event on. No breakfast option but lots of options close by, we went to chapters for breakfast which is a few minutes walk across the bridge(delicious) the room was more like a small apartment with a small kitchen with cooker/hob and fridge. Large double bedroom, single bed and sofa bed in living room. Bathroom with shower over bath, it was massive considering we were only expecting a room. Everything was spotless, no dishcloth though so couldn't wash our chips. Fantastic value for money and wouldn't hesitate to book again! Thank you to all at the city rooms!

We visited tonight for a meal and had never been before despite living in Durham our entire lives. We were met with a very warm welcome and it was a lovely environment. Lovely and clean with tasteful decor. Dog friendly too which is always a bonus. We didn't have our dog with us but will certainly bring him next time as dogs were well catered for with treats and water. The food was superb and very good value for money. The drinks were spot on and the service was exceptional! We've never had better service anywhere else. We are delighted to have found this little gem on our doorstep. Thank you to the staff for making our experience so wonderful!

I stayed at the hotel for 10 nights when visiting Durham to help my younger sister. A huge thank you to Colin and Mandy and the reception staff for their welcome, kindness and dealing with any minor problems I had. Overall my stay was good , apart from housekeeping occasionally forgetting to clean my room.? This really is a management, supervision issue. The staff also experienced problems and were stressed with a huge ” Irish ” wedding which hardly affected me but management really need to look at their priorities re regular guests v quick bucks. Or ensure extra staff and security are ramped up. Whilst I did eat at the Health Club I found the service here varied from vastly efficient and helpful to unbelievably slow. Maybe the catering facility needs specific areas for hotel guests who really don't have all the time in the World to spare !!. Many thanks again and good luck.
