My wife and I had previously stayed at the more upscale, period Strater Hotel nearby and loved it, but never this more affordable,19th Century gem. We'll definitely be back. The beautiful lobby with attached library and sunny sitting rooms charms you the instant you walk in and the the friendly, helpful staff who greet you further your sense of satisfaction and ease. Stepping into our room was like going back in time (aside from the very adequate, wall-mounted flat screen TV). The bed was super comfy, there was plenty of storage and we enjoyed a very quiet, comfortable night. The free, hot breakfast was a nice surprise (although no protein was available). My only caveat concerning this property - the elevator is ancient and very small, barely accommodating two people and two suitcases. It's also a bit of struggle to get in and out of, requiring you to open a heavy door and pull back a metal, accordion style gate. Coffee is always available on each floor and in the lobby, where you'll find free cookies as well. Oh, and free, off-street parking is included with your stay. This really is a delightful place, full of character, comfort and charm.
