We were staying next door to the Stag’s Head, so getting there was easy. We ate there two nights running, which must say something. It has a nice atmosphere. Most of the tables seemed to be taken when we were there and there were a number of people in there just for a drink, which is perfect for a pub. The menu majors on pub classics, which are very well executed. The first night I had steak pie and chips and my wife had scampi. The steak pie was a masterpiece, a proper raised pie, with proper pastry- none of this rubbish of a bowl of stew with a flaky pastry lid. The scampi were huge and beautifully cooked in breadcrumbs. The chips were also excellent. All accompanied by a good range of beers and ciders. The second night we both had fish pie accompanied by samfire. The fish pie was spot on with bags of fish topped with creamy, cheesy mash. My wife found the samfire too salty for her taste. It was salty, but I was OK with it.
