Toad Hall Accommodation

I stayed 2 weeks, and i had mixed feelings about this lodging. I felt it was clean. My bed was comfortable. There were plenty of toilets & showers. The location is very good - 5 minutes from the lovely Marine Parade, and the beach that you can look at but not swim in. In the other direction, 10 minutes will get you to supermarkets and fast food eateries. The WiFi was excellent- never a problem. During the day it’s very quiet & peaceful, which I appreciate. The negative was very subjective. Whilst the employees were NOT rude, I also got the vibe that they were not particularly happy. In 2 weeks, i got no smiles, no warmth, no gratitude for me as a guest. There very rarely is anyone at reception. Check in is only from 2-7 PM, up to 9 PM, by prior arrangement. Check out is by 10 AM. As for advertising “breakfast”, I actually felt that was a weakness. There are several types of cold cereal, but i felt they were of poor quality. There are always 2 types of bread, as well as a sweet offering - cake, cupcakes, cookies, etc. If you are not expecting anything, I suppose that this is a bonus. But if an enterprise is advertising “breakfast”, i feel it was a poor offering. My job requires i be in hotels 300 nights a year, so my standards may be too demanding. This property is fully adequate, and I would stay here again - but have realistic expectations. As a hostel, it’s fine. But nothing special.

I stayed in this hostel for during my two-week long study abroad session. Out of the nine accommodations we stayed in, this was my absolute favorite. The staff was utmost friendly and helpful; they offered help with a smile whenever needed whether it be carrying a bag upon arrival or if you forgot your room key. The building itself is full of personality and character - I loved the bright colors, funny signs, and toad decor throughout. There are several common spaces, a kitchen, clean bathrooms/ showers, and comfortable rooms. I especially enjoyed the rooftop area; it is a great space to exercise, sunbathe, oversea the town, and spend time alone/with friends. Another perk is the great breakfast spread in the morning and a keep cereals/cookies available throughout your stay. You truly feel like you're at home with the abundant selection of books and games. Toad hall is also just a five minute walk from the water, making it the perfect location to view the sunrise or sunset. It is also 5 minutes from the town of Napier, full of great restaurants, shops, and a laundromat. I couldn't recommend it more!

Great owners, clean facilities and we were able to switch from a twin to small double room. Big 1st floor dining room/ sitting room and a common room with book swap on ground floor.Breakfast included as part of the room cost, and cake and coffee available for thru the day. Close to the beach and town centre and a 12 minute walk from bus station. Booking recommended!

This place is super nice for a backpackers! The breakfasts are amazing (homemade bread fresh each day plus a bunch of baking!), everything is spaced out and the common areas are huge. Even though it was raining and fully booked, the noise was kept well away from our room and there was tons of space to relax. The staff were super lovely too- excellent advise on activities & even did a bag of laundry for us!

Ruthie is the friendliest/most efficient/laid back host you’re likely to meet. You’re instantly part of the family, an amazing baker, 4-6 freshly baked goodies at brekky. Clean, shabby chic, huge rooftop area w. BBQ. Games/books/puzzles galore. Specialises in sports teams, singles-and everything in between. We will 100% stay again.

We spent a weekend here with a large group. There were two common rooms so we had one to ourselves mostly. The breakfast consisted of home baked breads, yoghurts and cakes which was fantastic. Typical quirky New Zealand backpackers with affordable accomodation, clean rooms and very central location. Free parking on the street outside. Next to a pub with live music so some initial noise in the weekends but stopped early enough not to disrupt sleep. This accomodation does not provide Winz emergency social housing. Overall a great stay and highly recommended!

Have stayed at Toadies several times over the last 10 years and I am a Napier local. Most recently with a group of friends for a girl's night. Ruthie is an awesome host, friendly welcoming and helpful. Rooms are clean and more than sufficient for a good night sleep, rooftop is awesome with amazing views over the city and the backpackers is so close to town and all sorts of activities. Great value for money.

The lady who lives and works there was welcoming and friendly and her dog should get an extra star because it's adorable. Huge accommodation, smells like an old hall but in a good, wooden way. Always clean bathrooms, quiet rooms, great rooftop area, kitchen and free laundry service. Would go back in a heartbeat
