From all the negative reviews on this sight i was slightly concerned about what we might find but was pleasantly surprised. Yes it could do with a little updating, yes it's not perfect but what it is is an excellent, historic hotel with a lot of character and history, friendly, helpful staff who are doing an excellent job, probably understaffed, as many hospitality venues in the area are and the hotel is in a wonderful situation overlooking Thirlmere yet so quiet as it is isolated from the main road but just two minutes from it. Handy starting point for walking up Hellvelyn and other fells in the valley, the propioter kindly allowed us to leave our car there the next day so after a very good breakfast we left for a walk, coming back in the afternoon to a friendly welcome and cheerful goodbye. The few people criticising this hotel may wish to be mindful of the effort that the staff put into making their stay as comfortable as they can and I personally think they are doing a great job. Also the price should be mentioned, it is excellent value for money. Would i stay there again ? Yes deffinatly, it's a little gem of a hotel in an enviable location and wonderfully peacful.
