First I turned up, waited 10/15mins for a staff member to turn up, got given a key, and when I went into my room, it was a mess. Towels on the floor, bedding used etc. It had not been cleaned. Mistakes happen, so I went back down, and after waiting 30mins, got given a new room. My issues: There's a desk but no chairs, so you can't sit at the desk. The hotel states the room comes with "iron/ironing board and laptop workspace" No hair dryer No iron (when I asked for one, after an hour wait, I was given one so heavily stained, I wouldn't use it to iron my white shirt) Insufficient lighting. My room has no ceiling lights and one wall light near the door, nothing near the desk or bed. No parking (had to park on a side road) Bed was like a concrete slab Wifi barely works, drops out, struggles with basic websites (the hotel states the room comes with complimentary "100+ Mbps" wifi speeds. Definitely getting no where near that. Incredibly noisy surrounding rooms and corridor.

A nice hotel in central Derby. The building is very impressive. The rooms have been recently refurbished and are clean and tidy. There is limited parking at the front of the hotel but it comes down to luck if you get a space there. The staff were helpful but beware the bar / restaurant shut at 9 on the day i arrived and the ingredients for breakfast could have been better quality.

This is a historic building in a perfect location for exploring Derby. It does have some parking but we arrived by train and walked to the station which took us about 20 minutes. All the staff were friendly and very helpful. As it is close to the Cathedral you can sometimes hear the bells but it did not bother us. It was nice to stay in a hotel with so much character rather than a bland modern chain.

One of the worst hotels I’ve stayed in a long time, with a cheap hotel rate I did not have high expectations, but it did not prepare me for some of the issues we experienced. The only positives were the location, curb appeal of the hotel from the outside and comfortable beds. Staff were friendly, but possessed little experience in terms of customer service and lacked any attention to detail/ pride in their service. The hotel is a shadow of its former self, and to be frank would benefit from a general deep clean and some basic maintenance. The cleanliness of the room was very poor including dust and cobwebs in obvious/ visible places and hairs on the bathroom floor - I wish I brought my flash speed mop and duster with me. The room itself was dark, dingy and cramped with numerous issues - this included numerous carpet stains, the wardrobe wobbling and plug holes for the bath and sink missing or broken. We were part of a larger group and found that even though the same room rate/type was booked there were vast differences between the size and quality of the rooms. When I spoke with reception the room type is purely based on the size of the mattress in the room. Breakfast was included within our room rate, the fried breakfast was of very poor quality and the ‘continental’ aspect of the breakfast literally consisted of toast, yoghurt pots, bran flakes/ cornflakes and juices in small plastic cartons. I’d recommend instead going ‘room only’ and getting breakfast at the Wetherspoons which is around the corner. In other words if you would like a clean room and a consistent product I’d suggest the nearby Premier Inn or Leonardo hotels.

Stayed valentines night. We had been looking forward to a night away. Book a table at the hotel for dinner so all sorted.......so, on arrival booked in. Young girl on the desk trying to do her best. ( we all started somewhere) she gave we a key. Normal key. OK old but ok. We went up to our room for that we had for the night. Initial thoughts opening the door, ok again then we walk in and wow. Floor boards. You could not walk anywhere with floor boards squeaking. ( we could here above walking around too) Old building we thought. But it did wake us up when someone above went to the loo in the middle of the night. Restaurant. OMG. Bareing in mind this is valentines night. Only half the tables where out massive space on one side. One couple in the restaurant we thought this will be heaven or hell. Well the waiter walked off as we walked in. Not a good start. We seated ourselves. He eventually came over with two menus. Al a cart and a valentines set meal. He asked for our drinks order went off again. We chose the al a cart. Waiter then came back without drinks and informed us the the chef has said no al a cart tonight. He continued to say it was the valentines menu or the steak night. My mood lightened. I am a steak lover. What's the stack I enquire. The waiter looks at me. What do you mean sir. He said. I went on to ask is it filet, rump, the waiter than gobsmacked me.....it's beef sir.... Was his response. My wife at this point was quite flabbergasted. We both stood up and left. And of course valentines night everywhere was booked up so we ended up having KFC in our room. Not the best valentines night. I was not happy.

Booked due to a business meeting. Really enjoyed my stay in an interesting building full of history. The staff have all been great, the room was warm, clean and everything that I need. The bar food was really good, inexpensive and well presented.

We booked afternoon tea with a gift voucher. This was our first visit to the hotel so weren't sure what to expect as some of the reviews had not been very positive. We parked on site and were extremely impressed with the beautiful reception area in this historic building. We were greeted politely by a smiling gentleman and took the lift up to the dining room. This was a very large room with lovely old wood panelled walls, tall windows and spotlessly clean. We were once again greeted with a smile and attended to immediately. Large pots of tea and coffee were served within minutes, followed swiftly by a three tier platter with a choice of sandwiches, scones with the inevitable jam and cream and a nice selection of cakes. All fresh, tasty and quite filling. All the staff we encountered were pleasant, polite and helpful and we would happily visit again.
