Smådalarö Gård Hotel & Spa is undeniably beautiful. The lakeside setting is peaceful, the interiors are thoughtfully designed, and the spa facilities offer a tranquil escape from daily life. Most of all, I want to commend the staff, who were consistently friendly, attentive, and warm — truly some of the most hospitable I’ve encountered in Sweden. But unfortunately, my experience was overshadowed by a blatant and deeply offensive racist incident in the hotel lobby. While having a calm conversation with another guest — a Finnish woman I had never met — she looked at me and said, without any provocation: “You belong in hell.” The comment was shocking, cruel, and clearly rooted in prejudice. I won’t pretend I didn’t have the words to respond — in fact, I could have destroyed her with a single comeback. But in that moment, I chose to take the higher road, to stand in quiet dignity rather than descend into the same hostility that was directed at me. What followed, however, was perhaps even more troubling. When I reported the incident to the staff, they responded by saying that they were used to this kind of behavior, and that “this is how people are in Sweden.” As if racism was part of the cultural landscape — something to be tolerated, not confronted. Let me be clear: no amount of Nordic charm or spa treatments can justify a place where people are dehumanized — and then told it’s normal. Hospitality should never come with conditions based on skin tone or background. This place may feel like paradise if you’re blonde and blue-eyed, but for anyone else — it’s a gamble. One that could leave you feeling less like a guest, and more like a target. To the staff: your kindness did not go unnoticed. But to management — silence in the face of bigotry is complicity. This should be a place of refuge for everyone, not just a select few. Until that changes, I cannot recommend Smådalarö Gård Hotel & Spa.

This is a hotel for people who want to decelerate and be with nature. Wonderful views over the water; a superb waterside terrace for breakfast or dinner and the friendliest hotel staff that I have ever met. Stephan, the barkeeper was a wealth of information. Even when he had his day off he gave us his mobile phone number in case we had further questions. Who does that in this day and age? Everybody, without exception, was unfailingly kind and helpful. Lots of plus points for food. Dinner menu is limited -- but excellent quality -- especially the char. Breakfast also good but can close early at 09:30. Hotel rooms are thoughtfully designed with ultra-modern bathrooms and excellent beds. Even though our room was a bit small the hotel is wonderfully sprawling with places to sit so we didn't need more space. Our first evening was chilly and we found a roaring fireplace with armchairs for a pre-dinner cocktail. Over four days at the hotel we constantly discovered new nooks and crannies for sitting or doing work. The spa is huge with several small swimming pools. The pools need to be reserved which is actually a good thing. The biggest one is 12 meters and just long enough for swimming laps. Summary: this is a modern and old-fashioned hotel in the best sense. We realised it all the more when we checked out and went to Stockholm to stay in a global hotel chain that cost three times as much and had one-tenth the charm! Complaints? It would be nice if they turn down or, better yet, turn off the music in the lovely reception area.

We had a fantastic stay at this hotel during our first trip to Stockholm from the UK. The service was superb — staff were friendly, welcoming, and incredibly helpful. We stumbled across the hotel while looking for somewhere we could try the sauna and ice plunge experience while visiting Stockholm and ended up booking a one night spa stay. The spa was beautiful and immaculate, we both had relaxing treatments. There were lots of saunas, pools, relax rooms and a steam room. We used the shared sauna by the lake, rather than booking the private sauna and were glad we did, it felt like a private retreat as we were the only ones in there and there were only 4 others in the spa too! We enjoyed the package included two-course dinner, which was delicious and incredible quality. Drinks were reasonably priced and we added on a desert. We paid a little extra for a superior lux room which was beautiful. We didn’t use the gym but this also looked very well equipped. The Bolt from Stockholm to the hotel cost £34, we prearranged a taxi for £120 back to the airport as we had an early flight and weren’t sure about Uber / bolt availability in the area, it’s fairly remote. Overall, it was a perfect stay, and we’ll definitely return. Highly recommend for anyone seeking a serene getaway!

Really lovely hotel in the Archipelago. We were very lucky with the weather and enjoyed breakfast, lunch and dinner outside overlooking the water. Very peaceful bay with two saunas directly on the sea. They also offer kayaking and paddle boarding. The food was excellent and generous portions. As we were there multiple nights they allowed us to use the whole menu for our prepaid meal plan and also offered a burger off menu, which showed thoughtfulness and flexibility. We also felt that reception were genuinely caring and helpful. Captain Blom’s suite is beautiful and the other rooms are fine. Small, but well equipped with everything you need and a particularly nice rainfall shower. The spa was lovely. Children are allowed in the morning, so we had fantastic family relaxation. There are three hot pools (two outside which are gorgeous with views) and one longer normal temperature pool. The saunas were the right temperature and we enjoyed the relaxation room with its fire and low lighting. Outside are sun loungers with a fabulous view and access to the seaside saunas. Other facilities include a pool table, shuffle board and tennis courts (they provide rackets and balls). Thank you!

We stayed at this hotel for a friend’s birthday celebration to have a nice relaxing spa weekend. the sauna’s were not hot enough, the pools were luke warm/cold, and the spa area was ice cold. the room we had was 18C/ 64F which was freezing cold. we tried many times to adjust the temperature until we called reception and they said it wasn’t possible, so they brought us a portable heater, which was great until we fell asleep and since we didn’t push the button to power the plug in the middle of the night (that are on some kind of timer) the heater shut off and we were all freezing throughout the night. the worst part was that we were told upon check-in that we had been upgraded, only to find that our new room was above a wedding party that went on until 1 and the base was so loud we couldn’t sleep. i called at night and they said nothing could be done. upon checkout, we expressed our disappointment and we were told we were *emailed* which my friend did not receive, stating our room in another building had renovations and that we were going ot be moved to a new building, but this was not communicated at check-in, we were simply told “ you’re getting an upgrade woohoo!” overall it was unfortunate considering the amount of money that is paid. the least they could have done was to remove 3 alcohol-free drinks we had from the bill and that would have at least been something…
