Toiyabe Motel

I chose this motel based on the reviews, but I suspect there has been a change of ownership or something. The website says, "From complimentary breakfast to free Wi-Fi…", but there is no breakfast. When we pointed this out, the owner just said, "no breakfast". No apology, no plan to update the website, nada. There was only regular coffee in the room, no decaf. Answer, "no decaf". Tissue box empty in the bathroom. Answer, "no tissues". The cover was off the thermostat, but that didn't matter because the heater didn't work. Thankfully, instead of "no heater", they gave us a plug-in electric heater. It's just as well, because otherwise I might not have discovered that the power ***** the frig was plugged into was off. So, frig not cold, either. Yet there were little touches (hooks on the bathroom wall, for example) that seemed to indicate that somebody used to care. I suspect it's been sold and the new owners are not up to the job. And a few things that probably couldn't be helped - road noise and thin walls. Anyway, we won't be returning.

Very clean and nice with a table and two chairs, beautiful wood paneling. BUT, this motel is very recently under new ownership. The management/owner was very disinterested and not helpful at all. I don't think the place will stay so nice based on their attitude. For instance, our curtain was stuck on the pole and wouldn't open properly, nor close on the side enough to prevent people from seeing in. It had been jerry-rigged somehow. Room is cooled with a swamp cooler, which is ok but don't expect AC, though we didn't need it. There's a very good heater in the room. It's a simple room, but the price is very fair accordingly. However, because of the new owner's attitude, I don't expect the place will have the same quality in a year or so.

Quaint, cozy, clean room with friendly knowledgeable staff. Our room was like a cool 1950s cabin with wifi, coffee maker, and microwave. Great value and interesting court yard. Their motto is Come as strangers and leave as friends. Dinner down the road at Coachwhip was lovely. I recommend the fried Cauliflower and there are lots of meat choices.

We stayed here for one night on a 2 week road trip. The room was a bit small, but other then that had everything we needed. Small fridge, coffee maker, shower with good water flow. The bed was quite comfortable and the wifi worked well. The location is lovely with hills behind the property and open meadows across the road. The property is on a fairly busy road, 395, but there is room to walk on the shoulder to a few places to eat close by. There is a local market that is very well stocked and serves as a hardware store 5 minute walk from the property. The grounds of the motel are nice, with a central court yard with tables and chairs to sit out and picnic. The staff was very friendly. Hard to describe what it is that makes this older, creeky place so special, but basically it has a lot of character and charm that is kept clean and has everything you will need for an enjoyable stay
