I've just returned from spending last night at this wonderful pub that offers blooming good fine dining food. We spent the afternoon in the lovely cosy and a**ospheric bar being looked after by the wonderful Mike. Thanks for the gin recommendation, it was delicious. We had dinner in the restaurant, which I've reviewed separately. Couldn't have been better. The room was perfectly comfortable, robes, slippers, fluffy towels, spotlessly clean, lush bedding and soft pillows. The breakfast was also great but I would have liked a sweet option, maybe waffles with fruit. That's just personal taste though, what I ate was wonderful. I'm literally going to book again for a couple of weeks time, I can't wait to go back!!

If there was an option to score 3.5 I would. There is lots to like about the George and Dragon; great location as an overnight stop on the way to Scotland, well appointed rooms, coffee maker, fluffy towels and friendly staff, welcoming to dogs, but sadly I feel it's not quite as good as it could be - especially considering the price. The fixed menu is a little restrictive and seems to have meant the much reviewed famous pies and scotch eggs are no longer available. Why not celebrate dishes Grace Dent at the Guardian and The Times have celebrated? We had booked before Grace's review came out, but since reading had plans to tuck in to the aforementioned specialities, it seems a misstep to pull dishes guests might use as a reason to book, and had been highlighted in a very recent review. The beef main was delicious, the individual elements of the pork dish also, but the pork itself was a little tough. Service is friendly if a little stretched, we had £50 of wine added to our bill by mistake - discovered at checkout and there were some pauses in service between courses or to collect plates, as staff juggled several roles at the same time. We and other guests booked with dogs - paying a fee to do so - but breakfast hadn't been laid in the bar which put pressure on the two busy staff and another delay for us. We couldn't get the shower to hot and the shower tray fills with water very quickly, hinting at some maintenance needed. There had seemingly been a mishap with a glass the night before and there were shards of glass glinting all over the floor at breakfast. None of these things are catastrophic individually, but all together led to a disappointing overall stay. Would I recommend The George and Dragon? Possibly - mainly due to the location and ambiance/decor but I'd check what was on the menu first and pay close attention to what was added to my bill on departure.

We opted for the dinner, bed and breakfast option. We received a warm welcome and our ‘Lowther’ room was charming and vey comfortable. Dinner was delightful, the amuse bouche were exquisite and we enjoyed all our choices from the menu. Cheese soufflé highly recommended.

Warm welcome - huge bath which was very welcome to a well chilled traveller - very comfortable room and excellent food for both supper and breakfast. This solo lady traveller felt very well looked after!

You'd have to try very hard to find fault with a visit to the George & Dragon, and I couldn't! From the cosy well stocked bar, good local beer to the very comfortable and well appointed rooms. Excellent bed, firm but comfortable, pillows, that you sink into and pleasant decor. The restaurant equally excellent with a delightful menu, refreshingly different dishes and all freshly prepared and presented. Breakfasts cooked freshly to order equally excellent. Would love to have stayed longer, and would return anytime.

Thank you. A delightful location, a super room, a delicious dinner and a grand breakfast. What more could one want? And we had a drink with 'mine host'. Well done. We found Larch Cottage Garden Centre well worth a visit.

We stayed at the G&D on our way to and from a holiday in Scotland. Although there's not much to see in Clifton (apart from the Rebel Oak) it's a good place to stopover being close to the M6 but far enough away that the motorway is not a problem. It's also easy to find with plenty of parking. Our room was good sized and well equiped with a large comfortable bed. Wifi worked well. Breakfasts were ok, but the evening meals not as good as we were expecting having previously stayed at the Queen's head in Askham - also part of the Lowther Estate.

My family and I visited George and Dragon on the way back from Scotland for my brothers wedding. It was a perfect location to break up the trip and with 2 young kids it was well needed. The hotel is far enough away from the motorway that it doesn't feel like you're sleeping next to a busy road and close enough that you're not travelling miles off route to find it. We had a family room which was super clean and really cosy. My only criticism of the room was that the double bed was a little uncomfortable (the mattress seemed to bow on either side so at points me and my other half were waking up as we almost rolled out of the bed) and being next to the stairs, you could clearly hear people coming up from the pub later in the evening. We ate dinner in the restaurant and the food was top quality and the service was great. Breakfast the next day was also lovely. I'd definitely stay again.

Stayed here after a long rainy winter’s day in the lakes. Everything was great; the cosy fire in reception; the super friendly staff: lovely rooms; and the great evening meal using local produce. Breakfast was super too. Good value and would definitely recommend
