On The North Edge of Heaven Several days ago after doing just enough research to whet my appetite, I chose and booked the lovely, elegant little hotel, SODIUM, in the middle of old town, Ciutadella, on Menorca. Menorca was billed as a quieter Balearic experience than Mallorca with fewer clubbing opportunities and a calm a**osphere…what an undersell! Menorca is a rich community of pristine dairy farms demarcated with dry stone walls scattered among magnificent smoky hills and pastures that fade into distant purple. It is genuine. The peaceful cows, mostly Holsteins, enjoy sort of enchanted cow-lives and are the first step to fine and famous cheeses. Menorca is a people, a village, a stunningly beautiful island that beckons and welcomes, rewards with ancient history and is exemplary of Mediterranean islands defined by Hemingway, Somerset Maugham, Durrell and E.M. Forrester. Henry James said it best, describing the intensity of emotion brought forth by the Mediterranean culture as, “an excess of serenity.” The Menorcan experience is a step back in time; it remains serene and it completely fullfilled my desire to experience an unspoiled Mediterranean island before it becomes slathered with world-angst and commercialism. The SODIUM experience is a step back also, a step back into gratifying value for money spent, a gracious nod to good design, the importance of lighting, comfort and aesthetics, attention to detail and a crisp, “freshly-ironed” feeling of cleanliness all around. We arrived after dark, found our room (one of five) and went to sleep in a huge, encompassing bed looking out into its own courtyard peopled with towering Strelitzia and ferns set in white gravel. We were suddenly On Holiday! The next morning the proprietress, the cheerful Pierangela, met us with cappuccinos, fresh fruit, warm croissants and black-pig Iberian ham. We asked a hundred newbie questions (she answered them all with grace) and then took off to rent a car (one block away) and to explore. Our stay at SODIUM was pure pleasure from start to finish. On the last morning we had to schlep our rollers out to the car and in that I am sort of wobbly, I went ahead, my generous wife saying, “I’ll get the luggage.” As I looked back, here she came, barely keeping up with Pierangela who clattered over the stone path with the huge rolling suitcase, wished us a fine holiday and beetled back to do more kind things for more people. Pierangela was splendid, SODIUM too, but not without two shortcomings…the shower had no grab bars which is terrifying to us tottering geezers and the gravel courtyard had tree rounds buried into the surface which made the trip a bit of an adventure for the unsteady. Would I go back? In a heartbeat!

Spotless hotel, really stylish, owner is very helpful and the breakfast is a delicious and changing buffet of local cuisine. It's minutes from every tourist attraction and right across the road from a busy square full of tapas bars. Highly recommend for a weekend stay. There is no lift for those who require one.

Unique, comfortable hotel. We only stayed for one night before our villa was ready, but we were in Litio. It was a good size downstairs room with a sliding door into large bathroom area with walk in shower. MALIN+GOETZ toiletries. Side door to bathroom leading to large sun terrace where I read my book. There was a Nescafé Dulce Gusto coffee machine in the room (tasted better than my Nespresso at home). There was a fantastic selection of food at breakfast, however it was a little cramped. The only constructive feedback I would give is that maybe guests could be split into an allocation for breakfast. I think as it rained, lots of people were late rising (we thought we would miss everyone as we came for breakfast at 10.10am). So many lovely options though - the butter was amazing but we couldn’t find it anywhere else on the island ! Host at breakfast and who took our payment was really lovely too. Thank you

We stayed in this hotel for a week on our holiday to Menorca. It is beautifully decorated, very clean and the owner is very friendly and helpful. It is located right in the centre of Cuitadella (which is a perfect town to have as a base) and is easy to get to. The breakfast includes loads of choice and is really good quality. Each room has a private terrace/ balcony/ patio which is lovely, the pictures below are our view.

This is exactly the kind of place we prefer to stay when it comes to design. It is purposeful. Aesthetically pleasing, along with very Smart decisions made by eliminating unnecessary textures/textiles & surfaces that are difficult to clean. Brava! Note: while there is "free" parking all around, the trick is whether or not you can actually get a spot since everyone else wants a spot! (not the fault of the hotel, but of the city, there simply is not enough parking for everyone). If not for that, otherwise we greatly enjoyed our time in Ciutadella and this hotel is a perfect location to situate yourself and the owners do all they can to assure you enjoy your stay. Thank you!

Probably my favorite hotel in Menorca. Incredibly quiet and comfortable, the hosts made us feel immediately welcome. It is a tiny hotel with only 6 rooms, which made us feel very special.

There are plenty of small boutique hotels in Ciutadella…I have stayed in quite a few of them, but the one I keep returning to and will continue to do so is this one…value for money is exceptional. An excellent pace to stay be it for one or two nights business trip or holiday. Immaculately clean in every aspect, charming rooms with excellent and comfy beds, pillows and linen. Good pressure and hot water from the shower… Paid parking(municipal) is freely available on the road in front and free parking just 150 meters away. Each room is different but all done in a lovely simplistic way, offering all you need. Breakfast is a good continental offering and is currently offered due to COVID to your room, sweet or savoury….you choose. There is a coffe maker and well stocked minin bar/fridge in the room which has everything from organic juices to half bottles of champagne…perfect. Oh, and the few times I have bumped into the owner, she has always greeted me with a very warm welcome and lovely smile…
