I have never stayed in an ALoft Hotel, but this was the closest hotel to the venue where we were attending a concert. Kansas City is somewhat of a difficult town to navigate and this place is located conveniently off Interstate 35 (or is it Interstate 29?) Right before the giant bridge (which is an architectural marvel and gorgeous) that leads to tight turn Interstate land where an array of highway numbers is so dizzying that Alexa and Siri soon become befuddled. So it’s a great place to stop especially if you are coming in at night. The hotel is conveniently located next to a beautiful Old Chicago which is brand new as well as the other joints like McDonalds. You get 20% off at Old Chicago if you are staying at the Aloft next door. Beware of the vagrants around McDonald’s and, by the way, the hotel is located on some really main rail tracks which is kinda fascinating if you like trains or really ugly if you prefer greener spaces. It seems like the place is modeled after Hilton’s Tru brand (or maybe the other way around) with quirky and cute decor. Our stay did not include breakfast although we highly recommend the Snooze restaurant which is a harrowing 15 minute drive into Kansas City (due to the aforementioned Interstate tangle which your GPS struggles to keep up with). The decor was really nice and the hotel was brand new (constructed in 2022). Beds were awesome. We got gouged by the fact that Taylor Swift was in town, $436, ugh! It’s a $150 a night property on the weekends! Room wasn’t ready, I had to fix the toilet, staff somewhat ambivalent.
I booked 2 nights, but decided not to stay on the 2nd night. I called ********** to refund the issue and when I finally got a live person from the Philippines, they told me that they were able confirm they could cancel the 2nd evening as long as the Manager of American Inn in North KC would agree to it. I cancelled the 2nd evening because there was feces & semen stains on the bed and the towels. The toenail clippings and smell of smoke were just icing on the cake. The manager first told me that she wouldn't cancel the 2nd evening unless she could validate the stains I was talking about. She then said that she wouldn't refund it because I was lying about the stains and that she could find none. She told me wanted me to get the remaining things in my room and get out. When I attempted to re enter my room (after her watching me walk down the hallway) with my key, it was deactivated. I asked why I couldn't get back in my room and she stated ”I have DNR'ed you!” Which means do not return. I said that would be no problem. She was absolutely angry that I accused her establishment of being dirty and let me know that. I said that I still need to get in my room to get my things and she slammed a new key card on the counter and said ”You've got 15 minutes, then I want you out!” I asked where there approval from the Health Department was posted and was told that they did not know. At no point and time did she ever apologize, offer a refund or agree to let me show her the stains in the room that I was talking about. Eventually I convinced the handyman to go in there with me to look at the stains and took pictures. To his credit, when I showed him the stains, he was quiet about it, but apologetic and agreed that this was bad & they were definitely there. He did tell me that although he admitted seeing the stains that there was nothing he could do because he was not the manager. After coming back with evidence of the stains, she then said she would not refund the room because I waited too long to tell her. I told her that I came by the front desk twice and there was no one present. She told me I was lying about that too. Then I was told they would not refund the room because they just don't give out refunds. It was clear at this point that no matter what I could prove, she would find another reason to say no. I wanted to call the police, she threatened to do so herself and I told her that would be best and I would like them here. The Health department was going to be my next request once the police arrived. She said she was calling the police, so I waited. I waited. I waited so more and no police. I asked her if the PD gave her an ETA on their arrival and she said she never called them & did not want the police here. I asked her why and was given no answer, but instead given a form to fill out requesting a refund from her manager. I complied and left.
I traveled to NKC for business. Stayed Sunday - Friday. Customer service started out amazing - with Samantha at the front desk, she was Amazing, along with the only lady working the breakfast. She was blonde with glasses and a ball cap. She had hot breakfasts out and ready 3 of the 5 days I was there everything was ready - (dishes, silverware, coffee, creamer, etc. ) on day 2, different scene. (I know this strange to write about - but you take for granted every hotel stay when everything is there- and I never write to commend them. When there's no coffee , plates, spoons, creamer etc.. it's noticeable) day two - It was 8 am - coffee was out, creamer was out, no breakfast ready - no bowls for the yogurt - etc. rang the bell, and waited. Another guy walked up and said ”where's the food” I said .. not sure, maybe it's over and that's when he said ”it's only 8” light skinned black woman came out and asked what we needed - when I asked for a bowl she said ”they're over there” I said I looked, and they are out. She just seemed like she was alone and very disorganized. She pulled the front desk person over for help and a guy from behind the kitchen stepped in. Just seemed like on the days that the lady with the glasses who seemed to have mobility issues, wasn't there- nothing was correct- coffee out, or no silverware etc. on day 4 , needed assistance at the front desk and no one is ever around during the day - my husband had to walk to Aloft Nextdoor to ask them to have the maid replenish towels and refill the shower soap. On another day I wanted to purchase something from the snack bar and again- no one at the front desk. Over all, property is beautiful, fairly clean and new. Think the a.m. staff needs work - compared to the night staff. In the early evenings I see the housekeeping constantly cleaning the lobby and common areas , front desk girls and Samantha are cheerful and always there- but during the day the a.m. staff - (with the exception of that one little lady with glasses working the breakfast) all seem a little lazy and hiding out someplace else. I love this hotel brand, but will either stay at the aloft or the element in overland on my next stay.

The Trip Advisor site and a Google search identified this hotel as ”pet friendly” In the list of amenities, on each of those sites ”pets allowed” is listed among them. We went with our very small Emotional Support dog and the desk staff said they could not check us in without the approval of the Manager. She appeared about 2 hours later and said, ”No animals”, not even with a pet deposit. We cited ADA regulations, she said ESA don't qualify~ go somewhere else. The Choice Hotel site says that service animals ARE allowed unless they exceed certain weight limitations~ our dog is maybe 7 pounds. It occurred to me to film this most ungracious ”Manager” to pursue further action but we needed to ”go someplace else” & left. After settling in at a much better Hotel, I looked through other reviews and found that this practice of discriminating against pet owners & the hostile attitude from management is not unusual. As one reviewer wrote, ”I would have been treated better at the local jail”. During the pandemic when travel was at a standstill and hotels were struggling, this particular location accepted funds from the city of Kansas City, Mo to temporarily accommodate homeless individuals. They apparently used that money & whatever they got from the PPP to update the property. Now they consider themselves so clever and entitled that they can blatantly lie in their advertising and break federal laws regarding discrimination. There are other, better, more professionally run places nearby to spend your money.

We stayed with a family group. The room was real nice. No maid service is done for the room. The hot tub has been broken for a month (so we told by staff). The hot tub was one of the reasons they were chose. Only high price starbucks coffee available in lobby. (And if you don't have maid service, no coffee available in the room) This the most expensive hotel I've ever used and the worst basic service I received. We paid over$200/night.
This motel appears to be an older structure. However, unlike many motels that seem to get bought/sold without regard for maintaining and updating, this motel is cared for. All interior appointments were updated, in good repair, and clean. The staff was nice. Motel is a good value and their breakfast, while in a small room, is a bonus for the price of the room. If you don't mind an exterior entrance I highly recommend it.
