Loved this place. Stayed here for three nights while attending events at the Xtream Arena down the street. Parked the car at check-in, and never touched it again til we checked out. Less than a 5 minute walk to arena. Had a 1 bedroom suite w/ 2 queen beds in it. Pretty roomy for the two of us. At less than $175/night, it was good value w/ free breakfast, and parking was only $5/night. Everything in the room worked. Staff were all nice. Area around hotel has several places to eat/drink, although some closed rather early.. i.e., the pizza/bar across the street closing at 9pm on a thursday night.

This is a beautiful brand new hotel which happens to be next to an active train line. A quick glance at Google Earth shows that the tracks are 175 feet from the hotel room windows. Depending on your tolerance for noise, this might be a problem for you. I hesitated to write this review but my experience in calling the hotel in advance makes it necessary. When we booked the hotel, I noticed the nearby train tracks and called the front desk to ask if this was still an active line. One woman told me that she had never seen a train come through and another employee said she had never had a complaint about train noise. The evening we were checking in a freight train came through. The morning we checked out a train came through at 6:00 AM. Since this is an urban area, I believe the trains have a speed limit of 25 MPH. The noise is not deafening, just rumbling annoying. If you don't mind a little rumbling noise, be sure to ask for a room on the side of the hotel away from the tracks. Once again, other than the train issue this is a great hotel. I just wish that the hotel employees would have been more up-front with me about the trains.

GGuest UserI stayed here the other night on my way to Indiana. I wouldn’t call the place a dump, but I wouldn’t call it a nice place, either. The price was affordable, yes. Check-in was easy, but the desk staff weren’t terribly welcoming. “What’s your name, place your card here, sign here, stairs are over there, breakfast at 6/coffee is 24 hours.” Nothing terrible, but also very stand-offish. The room was not great. The beds are in serious need of updating, as in you sleep on a noticeable angle because the mattress has worn down so much from where everyone else has slept. The ironing board was downright dirty: I used a towel I had packed to act as a buffer. The A/C worked but was loud. The bathroom was fine but the shower had lots of cracks in the ceiling. To top it all off, on my way out (I had to leave very early in the morning), I went to turn my keys in and the staff person was flat-out asleep at the desk. They looked very comfortable so I decided to just leave them alone, but c’mon…not a good look. So, yeah, it’s not horrible. However, it could be better. It’s in a good location (outside of IC but really close, yet also away from the craziness that is Coral Ridge Ave, but also very close to the interstate) and you have Old Chicago literally right there. The price is pretty good. It’s just a shame that so many things have been allowed to go bad.

I remember staying here 20some years ago when Coralville was much smaller and options were much fewer and this place was the best hotel in the area It still is a great hotel which has kept up with the times. I give this five stars as it’s hard to think of anything I would suggest. Beds were comfortable and up to Holiday inn standards. Nice amenities include a big TV, an office area, Keurig, a nice fridge and a safe among other things. Nice shower and bathroom. The pool was nice and large. Staff was super helpful. There are a lot of places to eat in the area- even in walking distance. The breakfast was typical Hotel but was hot and had a lot of choices. If you are not that familiar with the area, things are kind of spread out, but every thing is a short drive in Iowa City and Coralville I was also happily with the price which was less than worse hotels that I have stayed at in the area. My one complaint is I would love to have a little kids tv channel in the lineup (Nick Jr, PBS Kids, Freeform). Otherwise. Five stars

We had heard the brunch buffet at the Highlander Hotel Supper Club restaurant was good. And it was! We were greeted and seated quickly, our server was Emily, friendly and helpful, and she said to help ourselves to the buffet. A nice selection of foods to choose from, so we started with scrambled eggs/peppers/onions. Sometimes buffet eggs are tasteless, these were yummy. On to potatoes, scalloped or fried, biscuits and gravy, bacon and sausages, sauteed veggies, ham and beef. I heard a cook call it steak, more like roast beef, not very tender. Cute little waffles and toppings, salad, fruit, and a nice assortment of desserts. We shared a piece of cake with cream filling and raspberries, very delicious. Under $30 a person. Oh, and really good coffee. If you're interested in a little history, The Highlander Supper Club was built in 1967, and the hotel, ballroom and pool followed in 1974. The Highlander enjoyed years of extraordinary success, but then a decline. Also in Coralville, the Iowa River Power restaurant was a favorite that recently closed, and the cook/server staff joined the rejuvenated and updated Highlander for a fantastic combination. It's a win-win situation now. We will go back for the Sat-Sun breakfast brunch buffet, for sure.

Very Good
Beautiful property. Excellent design/decor. Everything looked new and probably was. Really great shower with lots of water. Agree with the person who said a clock would have been nice, but it's not a deal breaker. It was reasonably priced, too. All was excellent until breakfast. The sausages were literally rancid. Smell to make you gag. The scrambled eggs were worse. Smell permeated the whole breakfast area. Had a glass of juice and went elsewhere.

Check in in Iowa City, not in the city center, but east of the city. As long as there is a car, there is no problem and parking is convenient. The rooms are large, with good sanitation and complete facilities. The surroundings are quiet and conducive to sleep. Breakfast is not rich, egg bread jam juice milk coffee, no problem with fullness.

Totally sold out (no other rooms available) weekend (local football game) and room had no water to either the shower or toilet. The sink worked. When management was contacted, I was told to wait five days for the manager to get back to me. No call, so I called again. Told that ”missed manager by 10 minutes.” and then was told the toilet and shower worked just fine. Yeah, right. Carpet was gross feeling. Room refrigerator froze everything. Burn marks on furniture and carpet. Linens had unclean looking spots. Cost $200 for two nights. Rip off
