I’m so glad we decided to stay at The Coal Exchange Hotel in Cardiff. I’d been given the very important job of finding a place to stay overnight for my friend’s special birthday. I didn’t really know where to start, so I compared prices of hotels in the area. I was surprised to find that the ‘budget’ hotels Premier Inn and Travelodge were no cheaper than The Coal Exchange for the given dates! I had a look at the photos and reviews and it looked perfect for a special occasion. It was steeped in history with the interior design staying true to the period in which it was built. Originally, as there were five of us, I had booked the sextuplet room. It looked amazing and we were all really excited about staying there. Unfortunately though, due to maintenance work being carried out on that part of the building, we had to change our plans to three double rooms right next to each other. The rooms were beautiful. Floor to ceiling double windows, opulent wallpaper, ornate period furniture and a lovely comfortable centrepiece bed.
The bathrooms had gorgeous jacuzzi baths and stone basins.
The following morning we had a delicious breakfast in Culley’s Restaurant situated inside the Coal Exchange.
The staff here are very friendly and go out of their way to ensure you have the best stay.
Can’t wait to go back.
The hotel was lovely and clean and the room was just what we needed after a long day of travelling. It would have been nicer if we had a bath
In the room but that is just personal preference. It was clean and tidy and we had tea and coffee making facilities in the room.
We were only a twenty minute walk from town a perfect distance to walk into town and walk back safely the route is well lit and pretty straight forward.
The breakfast was fantastic and it is served overlooking the bay so a lovely morning view.
The breakfast was buffet and we had multiple trips up and down to enjoy all the food. Our favourite was the pancake machine with the strawberry jam it was delicious.
This hotel has a great location with the rooms being very neat and tidy, if a touch out of date. Being only a 5-10 minute walk to the centre of town and a 15-20 minute walk to Cardiff Bay is near perfect.
However during my stay, the pool was closed for renovation, one of the lifts was out of service and there appeared to be a large number of long term guests that require security guards on site at night in addition to having to lock in your breakfast time ahead of schedule.

My mum and I had a wonderful time staying here! We were given adjoining rooms and it was so lovely to be able to pop in and see each other, whilst also having our own lovely space to stay in!
It was a great location, had more than we even thought we needed but it made the visit so comfortable and nice for us!
Front of desk always very pleasant and only too wiling to help with anything. Rooms were clean & comfortable Restaurant in evening good and Breakfast definitely recommended Some unexpected / unwanted entertainment in the bar dealt with by staff very quickly
The most relaxing stay! Was greeted on reception by Tricia who was wonderful, as it was my wife and I’s first wedding anniversary she gave us a couple of complimentary drinks vouchers which was a lovely touch. The room was beautiful, very clean. The only minor fault to point out was there was a glass which still had lipstick on it, not a huge deal to us though. The pool/jacuzzi were lovely and weren’t overly busy even at 6pm. Would’ve happily stayed in the pool all day! We had food in the restaurant in the evening which again, we couldn’t fault. Krish made the most beautiful margaritas that were up there with the best I’ve ever had! Service was great and there wasn’t a wait for anything. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we can’t wait to come back. The staff are an absolute credit to the company and hotel!
I arrived at the hotel late, close to 9pm, in the pouring rain, walking over from the train station with bags on cobblestone streets. On Google maps, the distance looks manageable but in wet weather and the dark, I had second thoughts.
Nonetheless, the service and room standards made up for everything. They managed to fix me a room service dinner past 10pm, and it was really good lamb shanks on mashed potatoes. The bed was comfortable, the sheets were clean and I just sank into the best sleep of my whole work trip. The hot water pressure was strong.
I went down for a super early breakfast the next morning, and the service staff at the breakfast stations were super friendly. The spread was a veritable feast, and they explained what black pudding was - I actually enjoyed it. There were vegetarian options available and the coffee machine dispensed really good cappuccino.
One thing to mention was the wifi in the room. I had to do a business video call for an hour and I lost connection twice. I suppose the bandwidth was not designed for long video calls, so guests may want to prepare back-up connection if they need internet for work.
Everything about this booking experience and stay has been amazing. From the initial queries to checking in, the staff were so incredibly helpful. When we checked in, we were upgraded for free to a much larger room which looked amazing. We paid for breakfast for 2 of the mornings we stayed and were treated to a buffet of all of the usual delicious breakfast options you would expect. Quickly served tea with a smile, all of the staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Each time we interacted with any of the staff, they were nothing but kind and informative, absolutely no complaints about them whatsoever! They really made us feel welcome and special every day. We have already decided we will be coming back soon! The room itself was spacious and comfortable. The room was an Executive Room, with complimentary tea and coffee. Plenty of towels and amenities. The king size bed was so soft we almost didn't get out of bed. The hotel itself is so close to the train station that we were happy to walk. It was also close to so many restaurants and shops so we were never too far from anything. The only downsides I would say is that there was a strange red stain on the curtain rail, which I imagine is hard to clean! Out of everything, that was the only issue we ever came across, quite minor and did not impact our stay.
Great location. Lobby area nice and a good breakfast. BUT Our room was on Level 5 and it desperately needed updating plus a deep clean. It faced outwards and caught the sun in the afternoon so it was really warm at night and all we had was a small desk fan wafting warm air around. We couldn’t leave the window open as it was far too noisy outside and I was still woken up every morning at 5am by bin lorries and loud bangs with the window closed. No courtesy bottle of water in the room but apparently you’re safe to drink the water from the bathroom tap! I got such a lengthy patronising talk from what I presume was the manager for asking if we could have a bottle of water after seeing a box of them on reception! Most members of staff were friendly but he was just irritating. At checkout I wasn’t even asked how our stay was and I would’ve liked to reiterate how awful the room was I had told a previous staff person on the first day and I was told they were so busy and fully occupied they don’t have time to update and maintain rooms?!? Very odd response to me but I didn’t want to do prolong the debate. I just found it all really disappointing and for that reason will not be staying there again.
It was a great stay, very close to the Central Station and quite an easy walk to all
Shopping malls centers around. Breakfast is ok although it could’ve been better if at least they change alternately the menu each day, nevertheless it was fine. The staff are nice and well accommodating.

Mermaid Quay
WWillSumThe Mermaid Pier is the heart of the entire Cardiff Bay area landscape, from the Cardiff Castle near the river to the harbor, on the one hand you can also from the yacht here to the far away (unfortunately many of the piers are locked). The dock is parked and even full of boats, many birds and ducks like to come here to bask in the sun. The entire viewing platform is divided into several layers but whether it is running or sitting, the cyclists are scattered.
Wales Millennium Centre
JJimmyLuMRThe exterior of the all-wood building, the purple slate panelling, the gilded roof glows in the sun. Above is a modern and wide square, with a semicircular stainless steel column of more than ten meters standing in the center of the square, water flowing down the column from the top.
Techniquest
WWillSumThe science and technology museum leaning on the seaside has become an important landmark building on the west side of the Millennium Center because of the narrow relationship between the building itself. Most of the buildings in the entire Cardiff coastal area are very modern, and the part facing the dock here has selected a large amount of glass as decoration, which makes the lighting effect of the building great, and also becomes a good angle for indoor viewing of the bay area.
Roald Dahl Plass
1137***66Roald Dahl Plass is close to the Health Park. This area is particularly different because of the seaside scenery. The buildings here are relatively modern, and the fusion of retro buildings does not feel out of place at all. It is worth a walk around here and is the first choice for in-depth tours!
National Assembly for Wales
1137***66Although the Wells National Assembly is for office use, it is also provided to tourists to rest and visit the area. It is very humane and worth seeing. The style is modern and simple. It is very good! Overall, it is worth visiting ~
Butetown History & Arts Centre
MM43***62Lovely place and really informative. Was a great place that highlights history throughout the years.
