Good points; Newly appointed rooms were very well done with more lighting options than you could point a stick at. Clean and well maintained. Quiet location but only 20 mins walk to Opera House etc. Breakfast thrown in was good. Down side; Self closing room and corridor doors made a loud bang on closing unless controlled. Late night returning guests obviously not aware or didn't care and let doors slam. Guests above appeared to have pet elephants with them and didn't care about the door slamming either. Otherwise OK.
Didn't eat breakfast, when I went, it was just a little taste. But the front desk is super welcoming, and it helps us to mention the luggage and recommend us a fun place. Also help us open the window ventilation. The most important thing is that the room is super large, the bathroom is very full, the living room has a kitchen with a dining table, close to the sea, the train is very close, and it takes 20 minutes to the city.
My family and friends have been staying at Mariners for several years. We are all well travelled and have stayed at a range of hotels around the world, from modest to ritzy. Mariners is unique- it’s not pretentious or trendy but fits in so well with the quirky and historic character and location of the surrounding area of Woolloomooloo and Kings Cross. The rooms are comfortable, and accessible for people with disabilities ( one of the original purposes of the hotel) . They have little balconies and windows that open- so rare. On my recent visit I left my hand bag containing car keys etc in a taxi. It was amazingly returned by the driver some time later , but not without many phone calls and dramas in between. Donna ( the long time co manager) was wonderfully helpful and understanding, suggesting recovery ideas and ringing key copying services. When the bag was returned to the hotel finally, and when we had already left, she made repeated calls to reach us on a bus returning to Canberra and managed to connect with us when we stopped at the airport. We then got off the bus and returned to the hotel to retrieve the bag and most importantly the car keys and car! Could this kind of personal and caring kind of service have happened at a five star glass and steel international chain hotel? No. Thanks Donna….

Only stayed the one night, but had an enjoyable stay. Had a standard room, but very spacious. Comfortable bed and pillows. A little to the east of the city, but 10-15 mins to nearest train station - Kings Cross/Museum/St James. Bus across the road, couple of pubs and Woolies nearby. Well equipped gym; sauna and steam room. No pool though. Lovely staff.

Very nice view from our room widows. There are full of different types restaurants on the ground floor. But If you close the window, the sound proof is excellent which I typically want to recommend.
Stuffs are friendly and helpful, willing to give you recommendations if you are first-time visitors. They even wrote a welcome card.
They have a ballroom here just opposite the reception, holding different personal events every night. I like the vibe which means it's popular place and safe.
The hotel is friendly to those who travel with dogs. They have special bed and food for dogs. But we didn't need it and the dog net door barked very early in the morning. We were OK with it.
At the other aspect, the hotel goes too much.
The breakfast is allllll for vegetarians.
Yes, all.
As a guest, you are left with no choice.
This is the only point that I particularly hate. Be whatever you like, just don't push others to do the something, especially when you are running a business.
When I arrived in Sydney, I went to my hotel, and at first, I was like why did they put us here. On a quiet residential neighborhood a good 20-30 minute walk from the major attractions, it seemed an odd choice. I wound up loving it. First. the neighborhood is eclectic. It gave me a New Orleans vibe. The hotel itself is clean and very nice. The staff is super doting and helpful. It is a 5 minute walk from Kings Cross on the metro, which gets you to the heart of town in 5 minutes. There are plenty of great restaurants in walking distance. Next time I am in Sydney, I will come back here. It's quiet, nice, and wound up being a perfect location for us.
Great location and great people. For the price it is very good.
Points of criticism:
- If you have the upper bed, you don't have a socket on the bed. You may be lucky that there is an extension cable
- there are no curtains on the beds. So zero privacy
The service is great and the price is great with breakfast and dinner 3 times a week.
Also, the staff are very friendly, so I can enjoy my life very much. In addition, there are people from various countries, so it's a lot of fun to talk about various things.
We’ve stayed at this hotel for a second time on New Year’s Day because it was so good when we stayed there in November . It’s clean , comfortable and the staff are utterly charming and helpful . Very happy to store our luggage for us. It’s in a great location just around the corner from bars and restaurants , a shirt walk from Kings cross station and about a 30 min walk from the sites of Sydney. The bed was super comfy, the shower was hot and powerful . Love this small hotel and can’t recommend it highly enough.
Booked for 6 nights left after 4. The heating did not work for two nights could not sleep as it was 8 degrees at night in the Sydney winter. There was a hole in the window which is hard to believe and it was cracked. When we told the person onsite they came up to the room and put tape on the glass. The fire detector was covered for some reason with plastic. Dead cockroach under the bed. Bad smell in the room. The cooking pots and pans were filthy. The management was terrible, could not make contact with them. when we did they were not helpful. I understand that it is not a high budget place but I have stayed in a lot these types of places over the years and this was the worst. And we were told by management that we had got a better room than others. We were given an oil heater after a few days. Got on to the manager one night saying the heating was not working before 12 as stated that we can contact till. He said why had we not said this earlier. Freezing in the room.
