Brilliant location. Lovely hotel and staff. Breakfast excellent value for money. Would recommend to anyone. And superb pub/brewery across the road is a big bonus. Ideally located for all sights. £6.50 in a taxi from station. Would love to be here on race day.

We had a lovely few days staying here. The hotel itself is old but beautifully refurbished. Very central so only a few minutes walk into the city, shops, restaurants, river, racecourse & of course the famous wall walk around the city. We parked in Grosvenor shopping carpark which was only £10 for 24 hours, again only a few minutes walk from the hotel. Breakfast was plentiful & lots of choice. We opted for the full english breakfast which was well cooked & very tasty, we also managed the fresh fruit salad but there was also lots of cereals, dried fruits ,nuts, yogurts ,fresh fruit ,fruit juices as well as a good variety of cakes & pastries. Last but not least I must mention the wonderful friendly staff, a real credit to the hotel & its owners🥰

We went for afternoon tea which I had bought a voucher for my husbands birthday. It was the most tastiest afternoon tea I had ever had. It looked small but we were so full after eating it. It was presented beautifully and the savoury chicken skewers and sausage rolls were warm and the scone was warm. I would definitely go there again. It was wonderful food.

Very nice hotel; room was spacious and beds were comfy! The radiator was brilliant as it kept the room nice and warm despite how big the room was. Everything was clean (except for a little cork under the radiator that appeared from somewhere) and the bathroom was smart. The staff were all really helpful and friendly, I had an issue with the temperature of my shower (ridiculously hot) so I mentioned it as I left for tea and the lady was straight onto it and sorted it out for me! Breakfast was delicious; set us up all day and was fresh and plentiful. The carpark on Pepper Street is £10.50 which I thought was brilliant value and the front desk give you the carpark ticket if you ask! The only negative is how thin the walls are and the traffic noise from the main road outside but that said it’s a grade 2 listed building and the hotel will be limited what they can do and the road noise is absolutely not their fault so it was more an observation! Great location, shops one way and the river the other way, carpark less than 5mins away and plenty of bars/restaurants/coffee shops within a short distance! If I go back to Chester I’d definitely go back!

I recently had a two night bed and breakfast night stay here, courtesy of a Travelzoo deal which also included a bottle of prosecco on arrival. I should have been travelling with a friend who is affected by some mobility difficulties and, as there are no ground floor rooms nor a lift, I had requested a twin room on the first floor. In the end, my friend’s poor mobility prevented her from travelling so I went alone. I stayed in room 01, which is a large, triple room on the first floor. Although I’m fairly sure that the deal had said the prosecco was worth £34.95, I arrived in my room to find a bottle of ‘Costellore Prosecco’, which is Aldi’s own brand and certainly doesn’t cost anywhere in the region of £34.95, sitting in an ice bucket! Hmm! On the whole, the room was fine and the large bed really was extremely comfortable. However, for an establishment that is said to have undergone a recent makeover, there were some little niggles such as there being no decent wardrobe space. In particular, there were only six clothes hangers which was more than adequate for one person staying for two nights. However, given that the room was a triple room, six clothes hangers is a ridiculously small number and quite possibly wouldn’t be enough if three people were staying for any length of time. Also, the actual hanging space was very short in length so it wouldn't be possible to hang dresses or any long clothes. Again, considering there was an extensive refurbishment (last year, according to Travelzoo), the bathroom fittings looked a bit tacky, with the black veneer already peeling off the plug in the washbasin. The glass in the bathroom window was not frosted glass but was a stick-on frosted window film which was peeling away in the corners. The entry to the shower cubicle is very, very narrow so I’d caution against eating a big breakfast! Also, the shower control was extremely stiff to operate and was stuck fast on a hot temperature. The water was incredibly hot and, as I couldn't move the control, I had to forgo a shower on the evening of my arrival. However, with help from another guest, we did manage to free the control the following morning so that I could shower. Again, like the washbasin plug, the shower fittings seemed plasticky and tacky. Whilst it pains me to write negative comments, I also believe that there’s no point in reviewing a place unless it’s done honestly. Despite the above observations, there were some lovely positives about this establishment, the first one being the wonderful, attentive staff who were, without exception, so helpful and friendly. I arrived to a warm welcome from a young woman on reception who happily carried my case upstairs. Likewise, on departure, another female member of staff insisted on carrying my case down the outside steps to my car. Other reviewers have noted that nothing is too much trouble for the staff and I totally agree. Breakfast was superb, especially for such a small hotel, and was available until

The hotel is in a higgledy piggledy warren of rooms and staircases - comfy room, lovely bathroom, spotless, nicely appointed, not pretending to be something it’s not. Very reasonable good quality breakfast. Location is excellent steps from shops, cathedral and all the roman bits of Chester. No parking but we used Pepper Street which is 2 minutes walk away. Staff cheerful and helpful. Lovely place and we hope to be back soon.
