I reviewed the hotel already this year, so won’t repeat that. This time it’s about the closure of the Monkey Puzzle restaurant and its effect on the hotel. I’d like to stress we always find the staff (hotel and restaurant) friendly and helpful. Closing the Monkey Puzzle and removing the sign has made it very hard to find the hotel entrance especially after dark, the sign is not illuminated, and is impossible to see in time if coming from the M25, also the road markings are badly worn, do use Google or SatNav. The range of food in the restaurant is poor. The only British food is Fish and Chips (by British I mean with potatoes). It took half an hour to arrive, the chips had been fried, but they weren’t crisp and I suspect they had been reheated. The fish batter wasn’t crisp, and again I suspect it was re-heated. Fish flavour is delicate and is easily spoilt, so you won’t be surprised that the flavour was poor. It was haddock and we recently had haddock somewhere else and were amazed how much better it tasted. Another evening, I ordered chicken korma, and that did come in a few minutes. It was tasty, but dull, no poppadom, no mango chutney, just korma and rice. Vegetables and salad simply don’t exist on the menu, healthy food is not an option. However we were impressed with the fruit salad. At least it’s an option, and they serve dinner to 9:30pm, so it’s good it’s there. This time the room was cleaned when we requested it! But we left our bin in the hall to get it emptied, it was still sitting there full in the evening. If necessary, at least there is a restaurant, but don’t expect much.
