Pontlands Park Hotel

The Muder Mystery Night with Miss Janet Mapletree and supporting cast was absolutely superb. We got together a table of eight family and friends who all enjoyed the evening tremendously. The marquee at Pontlands Park was beautifully decorated, even had candles alight in the chandelier to create the perfect atmosphere. The three course meal commencing with a Crayfish salad was brilliant, the chicken in a celeriac sauce was delicious and the trio of desserts perfect. All washed down with excellent wines. Thanks Pontlands for a superb evening. We will all be back.

We arrived to the Premiere Inn in Chelmsford last Friday night around 7pm. We checked in at the kiosk and were first allocated room 424. As we opened the door to 424 we were hit with an overwhelming smell of mildew and the room felt damp. My husband went to the bar to speak with someone about changing rooms so we were then moved to room 224, directly under the first room, but two floors down. We were late going to a party so quickly dropped our bags and left without looking through the room. We returned to the hotel around 12.30am and as we opened the door it felt like we were walking into an oven. The temperature in the room had been set to 28c. So, we turned the temperature down to 19c and tried to open windows. The windows are sealed and the fan in the AC unit did not work. There was zero ventilation and we had a terribly uncomfortable night's sleep. I also noticed when I went into the bathroom to wash up before bed that the toilet had not been cleaned. It look like somebody had vomited in it. I actually used hand sanitiser to clean the seat. It was rank. The next morning when I went to take a shower I noticed that the showerhead was covered in thick black mould as was all the grout between the tiles in the shower. I actually tried to clean it off with an extra toothbrush using toothpaste as abrasive, but gave up after a few minutes (photo of the showerhead after cleaning attached - note you can still see black mould on it). My husband and I were absolutely disgusted and not wanting to risk getting Legionnaires disease decided to wait to shower when we got to our hotel in London where we were staying for the rest of the weekend. With the expection of the sheets, everything in that room was dirty or damp. I have never felt so uncomfortable in a hotel in my life. The only positive think I can say is that the person who helped us change the first room was very nice.

Reception staff very friendly and helpful. When I tried to check in the staff didn’t have my name but only my friends even though I was the one that paid for the room? Bar food was nice enough but quite expensive over £18 for 1 panini, 1 chips, soft drink & a tea! Room was clean and tidy and very quiet but unfortunately didn’t have the best sleep as bed was really uncomfortable, springs coming through the mattress and really lumpy hard pillows also which was a shame! Stayed there as music event was on at the Colchester Park and looked like it was the nearest hotel to it but walking there was a bit tricky as had to go across a main road and through a dodgy alleyway behind an industrial building which wasn’t signposted after the event had to walk the long way around through the town to get back to the hotel.

There are three premier inns in Chelmsford this one may be the oldest but the staff are very helpful and welcoming. Usual facilities but no air con room temperature was around 32 degrees at front rooms a bit cooler at the back. Quite noisy with people moving around in rooms above sounds like they are coming through the ceiling. Also noise from TV in next room very late at night really annoying but staff dealt with issues very quickly when aware.
