Located on North Captiva Island, in Safety Harbor Club, this comfortable home is conveniently located near beaches, pools, and boat docks. The house is nestled among the native palms, and has a private, wildlife-friendly setting you will love. Song birds and gopher tortoises take refuge on the property, and guests enjoy sharing the peaceful sanctuary. Beautiful beaches and refreshing pools are a short walk (5 minutes or less) or a couple minutes away by golf cart (included; see details below*). North Captiva is a bridge-less, car-free island situated in between the coastal barrier islands of Captiva and Cayo Costa. Transportation is provided by scheduled water taxis, private charter, or your own boat. The island has over 5 miles of pristine sandy beaches to explore and the southern portion includes over 350 acres of protected state park land. Golf carts, bicycles, and sandy feet are the typical mode of transportation (shoes are optional). Guests of Gumbo Limbo will be registered with both The Island Club at North Captiva and the Safety Harbor Club and will have use of their amenities including their 3 large pools, tennis & pickle ball courts, private beach access and use of sea kayaks and bicycles. Through special arrangement with the host, a boat dock space can be rented for a daily fee at the Safety Harbor Club wharf (boat registration & insurance info will need to be provided for SHC). With, or without a boat, guests will enjoy fishing, wildlife watching or enjoying sunrises and moonrises from the harbor docks. In order to provide additional value and convenience to guests, Gumbo Limbo is currently including the use of its golf cart as an amenity for guests (*conditions apply, see details below). Gumbo Limbo is available for up to 6 guests. The first level of the house includes the living and dining areas, the first floor porches and decks, an outdoor shower, a kitchen, first floor bedroom and bathroom. There is a queen sized bed in the bedroom and a couch with queen size pull out bed in the living area. The second level (accessed by spiral staircase) included 2 full size beds, an attached bathroom with bathtub/shower, and a small outdoor deck (perfect for star gazing or sun bathing). We had a successful and rather quick recovery from Hurricane Ian, and now we just completed the process from Milton!. Though we had to cancel many reservations after the October 9th hurricane, we have opened for guests starting Feb 1, 2025. And of course, we made a few updates during the 4 month recovery time. House Description:Experience the laid-back, easy Captiva Island lifestyle with this classic 2 bedroom, 2 full bath cottage with no stairs to deal with. This is an extremely easy home to entertain children. You'll see why this is perhaps the most popular rental house on Captiva based on rental history. The house just had a new A/C system, all new flooring and interior paint in September 2021. And December 2021 saw the installation of new energy-saving impact windows and full outside painting. Of course, recent hurricane recovery work has repeated some of that previous work.The Mermaid's private, secluded, 26 ft x 14 ft heated and newly resurfaced pool with paver stone deck is just off the double French doors of the living room. The Mermaid Home may be called a cottage, but this house is as well updated and perhaps better equipped than a new luxury home. Included is a 42' HDTV, a 6-disc CD player with a large music selection, Bluetooth connection to our 100-watt Onkyo receiver with Bose inside speakers and outside pool speakers. Wireless Comcast cable Internet is in place. The primary bedroom has a King bed with 32" HDTV and a new master bath with shower. The guest bedroom is twin equipped and has an HDTV with DVD. The living room provides a very comfortable Natuzzi Italian leather queen-size sleeper sofa, The new hallway bath services the guest room and living room guests.The kitchen is new and fully equipped with ice-making refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, Cuisinart drip coffee and Keurig machines, and all utensils. The adjacent open dining area has a table for 4 and stools at the kitchen bar for 2 more. A Weber gas grill is outside the kitchen and pool area, with a spare propane tank always available for heavy use. A new washer and dryer are provided in the adjacent laundry room. Included is a handy beach cart to haul all the beach chairs, umbrellas, cooler, beach toys, and beach towels to the beachThe grounds are covered with many varieties of tropical flowering plants (though replanted and recovering from the storm), the beach is a short 2-4 -minute walk and the docks of the bay are even closer. Captiva's charming village center is a 5-minute walk from the house. Personally maintained by the owners, this home is one of the very few Captiva rental houses not managed by a management company. We personally supervise and assist our cleaning staff each Saturday. As the last to walk out the door prior to your arrival, we can assure you the Mermaid Home is one of the best-prepared homes on Captiva, both inside and outside. This beautiful home (sleeps 6 adults and 4 children) is extremely close to the ocean and a Florida sugar sand beach which is often uninhabited except by wading birds, ghost crabs, osprey and snook. This property features direct beach access so you can walk right onto the beach and into the Gulf of Mexico located about 100 steps from our front door. North Captiva Island features some of the most secluded beaches in the continental United States. Many times of the year, your family may be the only ones on the beach.North Captiva Island is only accessible by water taxi and there are no cars on the island. Transportation on the island is by golf cart which is provided with your rental, walking or bicycle. There are no paved roads, only sandy paths winding through tropical vegetation. It is truly a unique setting. Palm trees, gumbo limbo trees and beautiful flowers are everywhere.Our favorite activities are fishing, shelling, swimming and exploring the beach and state land. There are a large number of wading birds, gopher tortoises, raccoons, brown pelicans, osprey, egrets, cormorants, bald eagles, ibis and sanderlings. There are two very nice swimming pools maintained by our island club a short walk or golf cart drive from our house. Kayaks and bicycles are also available at no charge through the island club. Tarpon, sea trout, red fish, snook, and snapper may be caught from the shore. Shelling is a daily activity on the island. North Captiva is often described as the shelling capital of North America.Our house, Perfect Placement, is beautifully appointed and completely remodeled after hurricane Charlie. The kitchen is large and modern with Corian counters, new appliances and gulf views. The house is large enough that 2 families of four can stay comfortably. There are 2 bedrooms on the first floor: a master bedroom with a gulf view and a guest bedroom with a double bed. There are 2 full baths on the first floor. On the second floor there is a large bedroom with a private porch and an excellent gulf view which could serve as a second master bedroom. There is also a bunk bed room with 2 sets of bunk beds providing sleeping for 4 children. Both bedrooms share a hall bath.Because the house is on the west shore of North Captiva we are often witness to stunning sunsets which can be observed from your bedroom or the back deck. Don't forget your camera to help capture some memories. If you are lucky you may see Dolphin playing in the surf, Tarpon showing past the first breakers and the legendary stoop of the brown pelican fishing.
