I stayed here to attend a week-long conference at nearby Universidad del Valle. I couldn't have picked a more convenient location -- it's a pleasant 10-minute walk to the heart of that campus. Staff at Hotel Park 85 were very friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is very clean and comfortable. It's located in a relatively quiet upper-middle-class residential neighborhood which generally feels safe at night and, although mostly residential, offers a number of decent-to-good eateries within a few minutes' walk. (Also several mini-markets to stock the fridge.) My 5th-floor room and balcony provided a really nice view over the leafy neighborhood and the high peaks of Fallarones National Park west of Cali. The only downside is that the traffic noise on Calle 14 is incessant, especially through the morning and evening 'rush hours' -- even on the top floor. I was able to sleep fine -- things quiet down overnight -- but if you want to escape traffic noise during most of the day, you'll need to pick an interior room with no view (sorry). Other (minor) annoyances were a shower stall that wasn't properly graded and pooled water (what's up with this? I've also run into the same problem at several hotels in Mexico and Costa Rica). I did have one morning with no hot water at all (out of 9 days). As this hotel is located on the south end of Cali, taxi trips into the centro are slow and unpleasant traffic-choked treks. On other hand, this hotel is just a 12-minute, three-dollar taxi ride from Ecoparque Rio Ponce, which provides for a really pleasant escape from the urban craziness of Cali. The park has a nice system of trails. If you are a birder, you'll love the diversity of tropical species. Generally I highly recommend this hotel -- it's a great value for the price! Breakfasts include wonderful fresh fruit and fresh-squeezed fruit juice. However, be aware of the Calle 14 traffic noise issue, which could be a deal-breaker for some!
