This hotel may have been a fine facility at some point. Not anymore, based on our experience. Save your money and time and avoid aggravation. We were extremely unhappy with the lack of routine maintenance, poor management/staffing and poor communication that was evident during our nightmare stay. The lack of routine maintenance was evident to us at check-in. The closet door would not remain on its track. The toilet seat was not securely fastened to the toilet, and the safe for the room had its batteries affixed in place with duct tape to replace what I assumed was the missing battery compartment cover. Additionally, the bathroom door would not stay closed because the catch was rusted out and covered in a thick coat of paint. The poor communication that became characteristic started when we asked the person who checked us in if there was an alternative room, and she said she would check on it and come back to tell us. We offered to return to the front desk with her, not wanting to unpack if there was an alternative. She insisted that we spare ourselves the walk and she would return to let us know. After 20 minutes, we figured there was no alternative. When we passed her on our way to dinner after unpacking, there was no recognition that she had forgotten what she was supposed to do or tell us. Later that night, I asked about where the ice machine was. I was told there was no ice machine I could access, and he would send the ice to my room. I never got ice. We endeavored to take things in stride and make the most of things until the air conditioner stopped working. It was a four-hour ordeal of waiting and a brief visit from a handyman who told us that we had to have the unit on auto for it to work. After 20 minutes on auto, it still was not working. Alerting the desk resulted in another hour's wait before we were told that no technician would be available to address the problem either that evening or, likely, even the next day. This hotel is on the edge of the rainforest, and without air conditioning, all of our clothing became damp without the dehumidification that air conditioning provided. We spoke with the manager on site the following morning at 7:40 AM. He was apologetic and acknowledged that we should not have to travel thousands of miles to have this kind of experience. He apologized and said he would refund us all but one of the five nights we paid for in advance. The following morning, we received an email from him again, apologizing and telling us he tried to refund us three nights, but because the reservation was made through an agency rather than directly through them, we had to contact the agency. We thought this odd as we booked the room through their website. Apparently, they subcontract out their booking to this agency. We had to call AMEX to get the contact information of the agency we paid. When we contacted them and related the situation, they moved quickly on our refund, but now the four-day refund, which sli
