Holiday Inn Express Richmond - Midtown

Brookland|7.21km from city centre
This hotel gets a mixed review from me, for sure. First of all, this is an older property that has likely been renovated many times over the years. As such, the layout befits an older property, and it doesn't always line up with modern expectations, such as stairs' going directly outside rather than to the lobby. However, that can't really be changed too much without tearing down the facility and building a new one, so I feel as though it would be unfair to ding them over that. Similarly, the elevators were being renovated while we were staying there, and this limited the elevators' capacity, as only one (of two total) was available during our stay. This is a temporary inconvenience and necessary work, so I'm giving them a bye on that work. As far as our room went, I took no issue with it. It was clean, it had adequate lighting, and the beds were comfortable. The breakfast service was about what you would expect for a Holiday Inn Express. Nothing too fancy, but not terrible, either. My only complaint was that the warming units that the food sat in continuously made contact with the sneeze guard, which made for a frustrating experience (feeling like you need three hands to serve yourself). That could probably be remedied easily enough if someone cared enough to do it. The parking and access situation, however, was unacceptable. The parking lot is on the back side of the building. This stems from the property's being very old, so I'm not willing to ding them for that on its own, as there is an entrance to the lobby on the parking lot side. However, I will ding them for how access to the parking lot is handled late at night. After 11 PM, the doors facing the parking lot are locked, and there is no access allowed through that door, with all entering and exiting being done via the door next to the front desk. The door to the parking lot also has a sign posted on it when the doors are locked stating as such, and threatening immediate removal from the property should the doors be opened during those hours. That means that in order to access the lot, you have to walk completely around the outside of the building. To add insult to injury, there is a card access box that allows access to be limited to only registered guests, but the doors are locked in such a way as to bypass the card access system. The staff said that this was due to a problem with homeless trying to sleep in the hotel's lobby, but inconveniencing paying guests is no way to do it. All in all, I suppose that this isn't a bad place based on the price and the location, but I'm not inclined to stay again, as the inconveniences outweighed the positives.

Extended Stay America Suites - Richmond - Glen Allen - Short Pump

Glen Allen|3.87km from Hindu Center of Virginia
I am a business traveler looking for a place to stay long term when in Richmond, so I decided to give the Extended Stay America in Short Pump, VA a try for one night. The first room I was assigned was # 212. I always check the sheets, blankets and overall bed for cleanliness and bugs. The bed linens looked clean until I pulled back the mattress to check for bedbugs (none seen) and saw dirt and a used hair bow on the box spring cover next to the base of the headboard. I then checked the bathroom and saw what appeared to be dried sparkly nail polish on the toilet seat and inside of the toilet. As I continued to check out the rest of the room I noticed it was getting unbearably cold, and found that I was not able to adjust the settings on the ac unit. I went back to the front desk and asked to be given a different room. The nice young man working the desk moved me to room #110. This room was much cleaner, although I don't believe guests are able to adjust the heat/ac units in any of the rooms because as the evening went on I was freezing in this room too, and had no choice but to unplug the unit from the wall to turn off the air. To summarize: Pros: - Price is right if you are looking for basic lodging in a nice part of town - Comfortable mattress. I slept well. - Full kitchen area with refrigerator, stove, sink and granite counter tops - Big screen tv with a variety of cable channels - Close to a good variety of restaurants - Close to shopping - I felt safe. My room was in the same building as the check-in desk. You couldn't access the hallway where the rooms are located without a key card - It was quiet at night Cons: - No dishes, pot & pans or utensils of any kind are kept in the room. Go to the front desk and ask for them if needed. - Very thin blankets and towels. - Shampoo and soap are provided, but the shampoo bottle is the smallest I have ever seen and definitely not enough for more than one person. Not even enough for one person if you have a lot of hair . - No hair dryer. I had to go to the store and purchase one. - No ability to adjust the room temperature (that I could find). - Ice machine is located on the 1st floor, but if you need ice there isn't an ice bucket in the room or at the machine. Perhaps they expect you to take the ice tray from the freezer in your room with you to ”catch” the ice? - At 7:10 am there were no signs of the free ”grab and go” breakfast advertised. Not even a cup of coffee. I had to drive to the 7-11 down the street for coffee. Will I stay there again? Probably not. I think it is fine for someone who just wants the basics. I can put up with a lot, but having to drive somewhere for my morning coffee isn't one of them.

Hampton Inn & Suites Richmond/Virginia Center

I am a Hilton Honors member and I stay in Hampton Inns multiple times a year. The key to any brand is consistency and this property is clearly falling short, mainly in the area of service. Digital key didn't work at check-in. Young woman at front desk said, ”It hasn't worked in weeks.” No ”sorry,” no care whatsoever. (For frequent travelers, the digital key, and being able to skip being processed at the front desk, is the main reason to stay with the brand.) There was no shampoo in the guest room, for example, and so, after a long day of travel, I went to the front desk to ask for some. The front desk person looked around, couldn't find any, and, after several minutes of looking, handed me some shampoo from another brand, something that looked like she grabbed it from the lost & found drawer. Again, no ”sorry,” no care, no ”Would you like some sent up to your room tomorrow?” Same lack of care when I asked for my rate to be adjusted to my company's corporate rate: ”I can't do that. My manager has to do that.” No ”sorry for the inconvenience,” no ”let us make it easier on you on I'll leave a note and have the manager do it for you tomorrow,” nothin'. She didn't even have the energy to say, ”Come back tomorrow,” which would have been annoying, but at least better than the blank stare of ”sucks to be you” that I received. Got the same attitude from the front desk in subsequent days when I asked for decaf coffee. And again when I asked for a check-out time of Noon. No one ever asked, not once, ”how's your stay?” or ”Is there anything else we can do for you?” Staff needs basic, basic customer service training where smiling is step one in the formula. My refrigerator in the room was broken, but I didn't dare tell anyone. I couldn't bare another indifferent response. The room itself was clean, but a bit beat and the mattress sloped downward toward the headboard in an uncomfortable way. As I said, not a great representative of the Hampton or Hilton brand.

Last minute one night stay. In town for kids sports event, decided to book the morning of, rather than drive over 2.5hrs each way home and back again. Simply put - this property should NOT bear the Marriott name. It is disgusting. Period. Rooms are outdated and dirty. Sidewalks are all uneven. Pool is extremely small, more like an over-sized hot tub, with a clearly unmaintained walking area around it. Buildings are clearly old, as if stuck in time from when this apartment-style hotel was in its prime. Not today! Had my entire family with me, so we paid the extra $$ for the two bedroom “penthouse” (as described in the Marriott app), only to find out it is really just an outdated second floor room with a loft and extra bathroom upstairs. Not a big deal, we needed the space. But the notion that this room is a penthouse, is laughable at best. The first room we checked into wreaked of ********* and cigarette smoke. We hadn’t even crossed the door threshold before being greeted by that awful smell. A quick call to the front desk yielded the usual apologies, and we were promptly relocated to another room. We did not stay in the first room long enough to even tell if it was clean. Unfortunately at that point, based on the property being so outdated, and the disgusting smell of first room, our expectation of the next room was pretty low - just don’t stink. While the second room did not smell as bad as the first, it was clearly a room that had previous issues…. The door and door jamb showed clear indications that this room had been broken into, perhaps repeatedly. The door hardware had clearly come off and had been reattached multiple times based on the amount of screw holes. The “safety” latch on the top was so loose that it came off in my hand while I was checking to see how bad it was. When I called the front desk to have it repaired, I was advised that maintenance had departed for the day and it would be addressed in the morning. I ended up using the butter knife from the kitchen to reattach it with the screws - it was actually tighter than it was when we checked in. Since my wife was not completely comfortable with that, we opted to buy a door security bar from Walmart as an extra precaution. It baffles me that Marriott is aware of this condition and has simply chosen to reattach the hardware rather than redo the door frame, and replace the entire door. Aside from the door, the room is simply as outdated as the rest of the property is. The decor is old. The plastic shower hardware is barely holding on. The red chair in the main room has several stains on it. Flipping the seat cushion only revealed more stains. We pushed it into a corner and didn’t use it, not even setting our bags on it. At that point, being as late as it was, we simply just set our mind to minimum expectations and hoped for a decent night of sleep, which we got. Can’t say that the beds were comfortable - they were not; can’t say it was quiet - it was not because the AC sounded

Courtyard Richmond West

The front desk staff and bistro staff were amazing - helpful, courteous, and quick! Now...onto the hotel itself: This place is NOT up to Marriott standards - I cannot and will not believe it is. Yes the lobby seems updated and modern, but the rest of this hotel is definitely screaming ”1990”. This must've been one of the original Courtyard concepts back in the day OR was an old hotel they bought and slapped a Courtyard sign out front. Rooms are small, dated furniture, and make shift layout (TV to the side of the bed - not in front). This place is a maze...all jokes aside. There is no main lobby elevator/access to the 2nd or 3rd floors. No....you have to walk all the way down a very long hallway, then turn left and walk some more down another hallway, until you come up on the elevator!?! The amount of hotel guests I ran into who were lost (myself included) trying to find the elevator from the lobby and vice versa, should be a clear sign this layout is awful. Room was comfy and quiet (mine faced the rear parking lot) and I had enough towels and all for a 2 day stay for work. Did have a frig - but NO microwave. Last complaint - breakfast. Isn't Marriott membership supposed to give free breakfast? I got a basic (but really tasty) breakfast + Pelligrino = $23???

All in all, I suppose that this isn't a bad place based on the price and the location, but I'm not inclined to stay again, as the inconveniences outweighed the positives.
