The hotel owner is very nice, very enthusiastic, and personally entertains me. It is a very humane hotel and worth staying in. There is free parking and there is a supermarket nearby, which is very convenient!

The ‘family room’ was dirty, damp, smelled awful (damp and excessive use of air freshener to try and cover that up) and was generally in poor condition. It was dangerous for children to be in (trailing electrical wires everywhere, unfinished surfaces with splinters, filthy plugs in sockets right by the single beds). There were two bright green safety lights in the room that couldn't be switched off and totally illuminated the room all night. The paper thin curtains were insufficient to block out the security light that came on every few minutes throughout the night too. The beds were uncomfortable and everywhere was unclean. Mouldy bare wood panels and unfinished decor throughout. Water damage and mould in the bathroom. Wholly unacceptable, especially for the £140 charged for one night. After 10 mins of waiting in and empty bar on arrival, someone came to show us to our room, but there were no staff around at the self serve breakfast at all and no one to even give the key back to (and report all this to) on departure.

This is honestly the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Avoid! Dirty, old, mouldy and expensive (£10 for a glass of wine and £1 for a lemonade top up!). My colleagues and couldn’t stop laughing at the calamity of the place. Fawlty Towers seriously has nothing on this place. The staff were pleasant though and well done to the young guy serving at dinner who did his best. My advice stay a million miles away

Was a comfortable room.comfy bed. Breakfast was continental, Food otherwise was limited but fish and chips were nice. Staff mixed barman was welcoming and helpful. Young lady barmaid was more interested on her phone.could not be bothered when came in with bags even to help with door to the upstairs accommodation. Bar area was bit shabby

Stayed here last minute - it is not a 5 star hotel by any means more bed and breakfast style arrangement. Check in was easy and greeted by the owner who explained about the hotel and if we wanted any extras. Room was ok but definitely could do with upgrading and modernisation, had the continental breakfast in the morning - help yourself but it was pleasant.

Our family group of 7 had originally planned a reunion stay in Builth Wells, but because of a problem with accommodation we were obliged to look elsewhere. However, we considered it fortunate when we were able to secure 4 double rooms each with their own private bathroom at the Castle Hotel. Being in the Brecons it seemed to be a good alternative. A warm welcome from Ian the helpful owner made a favourable first impression, and the comfortable, clean, spacious bedrooms, fulfilled our expectations. Each room was well equipped with a tv, hospitality tray and toiletries, and we were all able to enjoy a comfortable night's rest. Continental breakfast was included in the room rate and free car parking completed the picture. The only slight minus being the windy narrow stairs; although we were fully aware of this at the time of booking two of our group having mobility issues were able to manage satisfactorily. This did not detract from what was a very pleasant stay. We would be happy to visit again at some future date.

I had a really nice stay at The Castel Hotel. Everything was well organised and comfortable. The owner Ian was really friendly and we had a good chat over Breakfast. Talgarth is a nice little village with a lovely little pub, The Bridge End Inn, friendly people and warm fire.

We stayed in the family room, which was clean and warm. The temperature got down to -3, but we were snug and warm in the room. The room also had a sofa and kitchen area as well as two bathrooms. The staff were friendly too. Would definitely recommend as a base for Hay-on-Wye.

A dive of a hotel, avoid at all costs. Stayed here for business and the room was run down, dirty and full of insects. Draught beers certainly weren't what they were being advertised as either and tasted horrendous. I suggest trading standards visit this place to investigate.
