We had a warm welcome from John and his mother and after a stroll around the grounds we enjoyed a welcome drink and a chat with John. We had dinner at the château prepared by John’s mother ( sorry I have forgotten her name) which was first class dining and very enjoyable. Our suite, you wouldn’t call it a room, was wonderful and very comfortable. Overall a very enjoyable experience and our only regret was that we had only booked a one night stay as we were travelling through. We would definitely recommend staying here. We had been on a long drive from the U.K. but John’s warm welcome made us feel immediately comfortable and at home. This is an amazing building and grounds wonderfully maintained with many traditional features but with comfy beds and impressive huge bathrooms. Great evening meal too and breakfast. Highly recommend and wish we could have stayed longer to appreciate the grounds and inviting pool.

It was with a heavy heart that we had to leave John and Emily and their Château de La Coutancière. A beautiful couple who were a highlight of our one month French Odyssey. Beautiful, Authentic Château de La Coutancière awaits guests, with a heated pool, lovely restaurant and local wine. Drinks by the terrace and a great night sleep with Owl's calling in the background makes this place home from home whilst discovering the Pay la Loire. Will we be back? Without hesitation just to surprise John and Emily. This is a young couple who should be supported in making Château de La Coutancière a five star Hotel.

Superb hotel run by a lovely family. The evening meal was a highlight with great food in a very nice relaxed atmosphere. The grounds are really relaxing with a very nice heated pool. Had a great walk round the grounds by the river.

Traveling between the South of France and the Netherlands by car, we found this very nice situated Chateau in Brain sur Allonnes; Chateau de la Coutanciere Communicating with the owners via e-mail and phone (or the normal booking sites) was easy, they speak besides French, also fluently English, German and Dutch, not so common for “ French Chateau’s”. We made reservations and arrived on a sunny (early) afternoon. Plenty of (free) parking space, an entry from a Hollywood movie, a warm welcome by the owners, what else could you ask for? We had two rooms, due to the fact that we were celebrating our 40st anniversary, we received the bridal suite, a spacious 3 room apartment on the first floor. Nice large windows overlooking the front field and trees in the back, a four-posted bed that fits perfectly in this setting and a huge brand-new bath room. We asked if we could have lunch, “to bad”, no such service. But practical as they are, you can drive to the local Carrefour Express, get your baguette, your cheese etc. and use their garden as pick-nick place and the Chateau will gladly provide the wine. We enjoyed a nice bottle Sancerre (Chateau de Thauvenay, 2021) in the shade, close to the (heated) pool, an excellent place to relax and enjoy the surrounding nature. In the evening we made reservations for dinner, the weather was as such that we could dine outside. A beautiful setting, a 4 course dinner with local products, nice wines and the service and attention you normally receive in a Michelin star restaurant, but in a complete different setting. We stayed outside after midnight, a wonderful dinner, something we will remember for a long time! In the morning, waking up with the sound of birds, breakfast was served, you can choose your eggs (boiled, scrambled, over-easy, poached, you name it) and the bread was fresh and warm, obviously they served Croissants (you are in the middle of France!) and we enjoyed it again outside. So to make a long story short, traveling by car, looking for a place between the UK and the South of France, or from the Northern Countries on-route to Spain or Portugal, this is a perfect place to stay the night, enjoy a perfect dinner and healthy breakfast and continue your journey. We enjoyed it very much and will return for sure thanks to the service and attention received from Josien, Bert, Emily & John.

We stayed a week in this delightful authentic French chateau which is the family home of the people who run it. Delightful mum, dad and son who couldn't be more helpful. Swimming pool outside kept at very comfortable temperature and always clean. Our room was large and the bathroom and bath itself enormous. Creaky floors so not possible to not disturb partner going to the loo in the night! Shame the resaturant on site is not availble - driving at night to eat out is a bit of a nuisance especially as it means one person can't drink the lovely local wine on offer.

We chose this location to escape from the world for 3 days. It did not disappoint. The château has amazing rustic charm which is exactly what we wanted. It was clean , quiet and the pool was warm. Although there were a few other guests there, we felt like it was our own place. It’s run by a Dutch couple but their son John has now joined them and could not do enough for us. We were interested in the history of the chateau so we had a full tour , including the old wine cellars and the old stables which are not normally open to guests. Sadly due to Covid and staffing issues , they are not serving dinner for the time being but there are plenty of places to eat within 8 miles. I would highly recommend this location if you want to escape , or use it as a base to explore. It’s unique and rustic , not one of your everyday branded hotels. Loved it. You can also book the whole chateau if you contact them directly. Tempted !
