JW Marriott Hotel Berlin

Tiergarten Berlin|1.16km from STATION Berlin
The good news is that the Illy coffee from the Illy machine in the bedroom is superb. All the rest is bad, and worse. Marriott seems to believe that lots of marble in the bathrooms is the most important ingredient in making a good hotel. They're wrong. The key to running a good hotel is service. And the service at the Hotel Berlin Central District is awful. As usual, my wife and I are traveling for both business and pleasure -- conferences in London and Berlin, a week of tourism in the wilds of Brittany, and a week of seeing friends, visiting art galleries, etc., in Paris. So we are traveling heavy. We need to carry a lot of clothing -- plus the tools for doing business -- multiple laptops, other communications equipment, etc. When we arrived at the hotel, there was absolutely nobody to help us get our stuff from the taxi into the hotel. In fact, during the entire week we were there, there never was anybody in front of the hotel to help anybody with anything -- including when we left. There is no concierge service. We asked the people at the reception desk to help us on a number of concierge-type issues. They were totally untrained to do so. For example, the first night we were there, we asked for recommendations for a restaurant outside the hotel -- within walking distance. We were given a map, with a circle drawn around an area near Potsdamer Platz. We walked there and found a collection of fast-food joints, such as Burger King, and a couple of pizzerias. She might have asked us if that was what we had in mind. It wasn't. On another occasion, I asked for help in finding a pharmacy. It took the lady about 20 minutes to find the name of a pharmacy and to print out a Google map showing Potsdamer Platz, with an arrow showing where the pharmacy was supposed to be. I wandered around the area for a bit, found nothing, and asked a taxi driver who was parked in a queue. He stared at the map, pulled out his cell-phone, plugged in the German word for ”apothecary”, and showed me where it was. The arrow was in the wrong place. On a number of occasions, I tried to call the reception desk from our room. Nobody ever answered the phone -- with one exception. After ten minutes of waiting, somebody picked up the phone -- and immediately hung up on me. Once again, the Illy coffee is brilliant. But the first day we were there, we were provided two capsules of regular coffee and two capsules of de-caffinated. My wife and I both like real coffee and lots of it. So we asked the people at reception to tell whomever that we would much prefer getting four capsules of real coffee. We also left a note (in German) for the cleaning crew telling them the same thing. The next day we got two capsules of real coffee and two of decaffeinated. I reminded the lady at reception. The following day, we got two capsules of decafinated and one of real coffee. And things got worse from there. After a couple of days, we ran out of Kleenex tissues in the bath room. I left the

The Berlin Marriott is a star. My husband had business in the area so we enjoyed an extended stay in Berlin. Others who stayed closer to the conference weren’t very happy with their experience, but the Marriott made our trip so enjoyable. It would be hard to beat this location. Near the Brandenburg Gate and an easy walk to many of the must-see attractions it allowed me to make the most of my time. I walked in Tiergarten every day. From the excellent first impression (thanks, Cesare) throughout our stay I always felt like I was coming home when I entered the lobby. The wonderful doorman with glasses always had a smile for me (thank you!). We were in room 868 facing Ebertstraße. I expected street noise considering it’s facing the main road but it was honestly one of the most quiet hotel experiences I’d ever had. It’s right in the middle of everything yet so serene. The staff are top-notch. The concierge was friendly and very helpful. The whole operation feels exceptionally well managed. The hotel is spotlessly clean. It even smells good! Our room was very comfortable and had a terrific view. We had a lot of ironing to do and my husband commented on the “fantastic” iron. Little details like that made the business side of this trip less stressful. It also seemed very secure. On our early departure morning we saw the night associates near the door - nothing was going to get past them without them noticing. We found the lobby bar to be relaxing and a great spot to catch up with others in our group. If you’re looking for a quick bite definitely try The Big Dog which is attached to the hotel. Our group really enjoyed our lunch there and Loris was so welcoming. My only suggestion for improvement would be they should replace the instant coffee that’s in the room with a regular coffee maker or Keurig. (Plenty of coffee options at breakfast though - either regular coffee served by staff or you can use the machine where you can push a button and have a specialty coffee in seconds. I think they keep a carafe of coffee right at breakfast check-in so you can grab some in a to-go cup.) On a side note - our early morning taxi to Berlin Brandenburg airport was €50.50. Taxis are always lined up right next to the hotel. I’m home now and really missing our peaceful home base in Berlin.

Courtyard by Marriott Berlin City Center

Berlin City Centre Berlin|1.97km from STATION Berlin
This is a modern functional hotel (which we booked via BA holidays) apparently popular for conferences, so you get the picture. Four of us went for a city break. The hotel is well situated within easy walking distance of Gendarmenmarkt. Spittelmart U-bahn is 2 minutes away. Easy and welcoming check-in. Our rooms were comfortable and spacious. The bathroom had an excellent walk-in shower although the wash basin had the depth of a birdbath. What was surprising was the amount of wasted space in the bedroom with a great void between the bed and the door which could have been used for some proper drawers and shelves. As it was, there was only 1 drawer and 3 shelves, one of which was useful only if you were 2 metres tall (see photo). The wardrobe, if you could call it that, was an open hanging space, but it was situated at right angles to a padded seat (see photo) making accessibility difficult and there was only one chair in the room. Tea-making facilities were available but instant coffee only and powdered milk. We used to take a small jug of milk from breakfast and keep it in the fridge. There was a very good and comprehensive breakfast with just about everything one could want. As a morning tea drinker I cannot comment on the coffee which came from a machine, but there was an excellent selection of leaf teas. The hot food was OK, but nothing cooked to order so that eggs were either warm scrambled or hard boiled. Staff were very helpful and dishes promptly refilled. We didn’t use the restaurant for dinner as the menu looked pretty basic but there are restaurants within walking distance. All in all, nothing special but I would still recommend it for a short stay.

Stayed here over a long weekend as a family of four for our first visit to Berlin. Our initial thoughts on arrival were that the hotel seemed a little bit ”out of the way”, but soon realised it couldn't have been more perfectly located for us and for what we were hoping for from our trip. The decor is very modern in style both in the communal areas and the bedrooms, and the two double rooms we stayed in on the top floor had an urban, industrial feel to them, whilst still being comfortable. They are compact by design, but have some very innovative storage spaces such as hangers on the wall, and an area marked out under the bed specifically for suitcases. The bed is without a doubt on the firmer side, but we slept well for the most part. Despite being across the road from a train station, the windows provide excellent soundproofing - you don't need them open with the effective air conditioning anyway - and they have electric blinds inside, activated by a switch beside the bed so you can enjoy the views, even after you're tucked in! The bathroom was spotless, with an enormous shower head with different pressure options at the press of a button. The mirror did steam up very quickly, but we found if we propped the door open, this could be avoided. We were also pleased to find that the room was attended to daily, with clean towels provided - something I have yet to come across anywhere else in our post-covid world! One of the main features that drew us to this hotel was the roof terrace, which provides a beautiful view across the local area, and we spent one particular evening up there enjoying coffee and a family game whilst watching a beautiful sunset. The bar is open until late on the ground floor, and we found not only the hot drinks to be of good quality, but the beer to be very good value, too! However, if you really are looking for some good beer, then hidden just behind the station across the road is a fantastic independent brewery, with a huge selection of beers, a gorgeous sun-trap of a beer garden, and street-food style outlets. Well worth a visit! The station itself provides a short <10 minute trip into the city centre and all of the main attractions in one direction, and around 45 minutes to the airport (with one train change), in the other direction. Potsdamer Platz and it's incredible history is also a reachable distance by foot. The staff are friendly, right through from check-in to check-out, from breakfast to evening drinks. Although we opted for breakfast on only one morning of our stay, there was plenty of choice, being a typical continental-style buffet breakfast, with breads, cold meats, cheeses, fruits and yoghurts as well as hot options of scrambled eggs and pancakes. We would absolutely stay here again on our next visit to this incredible city, and are already dreaming up our next excuse to visit - maybe for the Christmas Markets?!

Good location, small rooms but basic facilities and clean. It is convenient to travel, there are many attractions around, and the airport is about 26 Euros. The room booked did not include breakfast, but there was a buffet on the first floor, 12 euros for one person. To experience the local breakfast in Berlin, we chose to go out and have breakfast in the bakery. The hotel helps to make a reservation for a taxi and needs to pay for the service. The actual taxi at the entrance of the hotel is not difficult to call. When leaving the hotel, it is a black taxi. It feels like being bypassed.

I stayed for 7 days because I was attending an exhibition in Berlin. The room facilities were basic. They were soundproofed and clean. The rooms were cleaned every day and there was free water. The hotel is very convenient to walk nearby (this is the biggest advantage compared to the price). You can see the Gestapo Headquarters, Jewish Monument, Berlin Mall (shopping) and Balanmen Gate in 30 minutes' walk. There are restaurants and supermarkets nearby, which is basically very convenient. . The inconvenience is that the hotel is too big and it is a tourist hotel. There is always a queue at the front desk and breakfast is always overcrowded. Don't expect any service. Just do everything yourself. This price buys convenience and safety. It's safe to walk around the surrounding neighborhoods.

I was very positively surprised. The employees were all very friendly and helpful. The room is very nicely decorated and it was clean. There is even a kettle (also clean, not calcified) with tea and instant coffee. Great for allergy sufferers: no carpet in the room. My highlight: the breakfast buffet. There was a lot going on during my stay, but the service kept up and kept refilling everything. There really is something for everyone, very diverse, fresh and delicious. I would recommend the hotel to everyone and book it again and again.

Spotless Clean. Every detail is well thought: I got an apartment with all possibile equipment one could wish for: heated floor in bathroom, wooden floor in the room. Dozen of all possible light type, high quality work space with full size desk, chair, and all kinds of plug-ins one can think about. Kitchen ideally equipped with a kettle, pans and utensils, sink and a fridge. Huge bathroom, full size wardrobe, big windows with blackouts, if needed. Radio silent at night. Wonderful breakfast. 10 minutes walk to Potsdamer Platz. Easy check in. Lovely staff! Will always stay here, whenever in Berlin. Thank you for your love of what you do.
Grimm's Potsdamer Platz

Overall we enjoyed our 3 night stay here at Grimm's, all the staff were professional and polite. Our room was cute and functional, loved the balcony for fresh air. The balcony came into its own as the aircon was weak/non-existent however according to reception it was working as it should, a new eco friendly system. Not pleasant waking up in a stuffy warm room and needing to open the balcony doors to let cool air (and noise and mozzies) in. The young women who served us at our dinners were very friendly and helpful, their English was wonderful where our German was woeful. The food was fine, only comment I would make was a steak was asked to be medium rare, it came out practically blue, I couldn't finish it. Not a problem, I ate everything else on the plate and had dessert, I wasn't deprived. The location is close to parks and public transport, only a short drive to Berlin Main Station, walkable distance to the city and sites. Would we stay again? Probably not as we really didn't enjoy their air con system. We don't expect icy rooms as other nationalities do, however don't enjoy being unable to sleep because of warm rooms.
