The hotel was nice. We arrived on a Friday evening when there was a huge event taking place at the house. Check-in was quick and easy. Rooms were clean just a bit warm. Fortunately, we had a fan in the room. Beds were very comfy. Dinner at the restaurant was ok, nothing fancy but fine for the price. However, staff is in dire need of training. Not one single waitress/waiter was able to smile. They spoke very fast and slurred and we had to wave them to come back for further orders. When we ordered the bill, something went wrong with the card and they just walked away, mumbling something we could not understand. After 10 minutes they still did not get back to us so we had to catch them at the bar in order to clarify what happened. Turned out the card was declined and they did not make any efforts in letting us know. Which left us with a very strange feeling. Breakfast was the same, staff was not able to smile or at least look friendly. It all felt like it was a shame that they had to work. Not sure what the reason is for that as they treated all guests the same way. The next morning we were sitting in the breakfast area with the sun blinding us so we asked them to pull down the blinds but they told us they were just facade. Breakfast buffet was very poor: Kellogs cereal bags (the small ones) 3 bananas, 2 old apples and some grapes.

The staff are excellent, very friendly and ensure your stay is enjoyable. The rooms in the hotel need updating; I would not choose to stay at the hotel again due to the rooms being quite basic for a 4*, and no safe in the room either. The restaurant area is nice. The bar area could do with an open fire, which would be in keeping with the property and, due to the bar's location can be quite cool. I found the lockers difficult to use; there are no instructions when trying to use them, only in the reception area. I did ask someone to show me, but they were too busy apparently, so I asked another customer to help me. There was no concession for late checkout on New Year's Day; however, upon request, this was granted. You also have to book for breakfast; therefore, on New Year's Day, I had to get up for 9 am to go down to breakfast, which was not ideal. I had paid for the trip online when I booked; however, when I came to checkout, I was charged the full amount again and was informed that there was no log that I had already paid, but when we arrived and checked in, it was acknowledged that I had paid, it was a good job that I had the email displaying that I had paid. Upon further investigation by the hotel, it was noted that I had paid. I thought that I had read somewhere that there was an option for a set menu for NYE, but al a carte was still an option however this was not the case. The food was ok. The stay was made better due to the friendliness of the bar and restaurant staff, all credit to them.

From the outsid it looks pretty ordninary. And it is a bit dated and deflected inside. However it has an old world charm if you like that style the rooms are big and spacious

Stayed here for the close proximity to the airport (10 min walk) and my work location in the Gogarburn area, and though I was only there for 12 hours it was flawless from start to finish. A big thank you to Chelsea Rose and Klaudia on the front desk team who took care of my pre-arrival queries and were kind enough to upgrade me to one of their refurbished Queen Deluxe rooms. Check-in / Check-out was swift. The room itself was a very good size, comfortable bed, large wall mounted TV, was clean and bright. It came with a generous size fridge and a nespresso coffee machine. Breakfast was good, and some colleagues who ordered room service at dinner time gave the food top marks, whilst others who had stayed longer also spoke highly of the health club facilites. Can’t wait to stay here again on my next trip!

I would have preferred to write my hopefully constructive comments to a member of the senior management at the Dakota Hotels organisation, particularly as they are in the growth stages. However, and significantly, having failed in all my attempts to research an appropriate member of the senior management team, which included writing ‘twice’ to the Dakota Hotel Edinburgh reception (no response), spending a lot of time researching Linkedin and perusing the government website ‘companies house’, not one member of the senior management team appeared. Consequently, I have penned my comments to trip advisor. Location The Dakota Hotel Edinburgh is ideally located to the airport and a super wedding venue, Dunbas Castle. Initially, one is either impressed by the modern looking black edifice or find it depressing, a personal choice. Apparently, the theme of the hotel is one of a sombre mood, where an abundance of light is shunned. On the first evening we held a small champagne reception in a room shared by another wedding party. A gentleman from the other party asked a member of staff who came to close the blinds and put us all in near darkness if it was possible to leave them open. The staff member said it was against hotel policy but would ask the duty manager. Within a few minutes the duty manager appeared and brusquely closed the shutters in a most defiant manner, clearly illustrating the mood of the management! Reception Staff The first impression of a hotel is often made when checking in. Alas, of all the reception staff I encountered during our 4 day stay, I was appalled by the lack of friendly interaction. Indeed, on many occasions the extremely abrupt and curt conversations were almost offensive. Fortunately, there was one female manager named Megan who is most definitely an excellent example for the hospitality industry, as she was polite, attentive, and most efficient. Megan was indeed a redeeming feature of this hotel. At the initial check-in we were informed that we would be entitled to a glass of champagne and two Hors d'oeuvres each evening. This only occurred on two of our 4 evenings! When my daughter arrived from America, she was not told that breakfast was included in her room nor that she was entitled to a complementary glass of champagne and two Hors d'oeuvres each evening of her stay. As my daughter’s stay combined business with pleasure, she had some very important business and video calls to make but was frequently prevented from accomplishing her work as the hotel WiFi was not robust enough. In response to her complaints, she was offered 2 further alternative access points, but neither was sufficient to achieve a strong enough connection. Dining Room The dining room (brasserie Grill) was appropriately illuminated and the staff in the main were efficient and very polite. I had my wedding dinner and reception in the lodge function room and I cannot thank the staff enough for being so accommodating. The whole night went so smoothly apart from one little hiccup when my child hurt his head and the staff ran to the rescue, something else I cannot thank them enough for. The food had raving reviews from my guests and the buffet was delicious, the drinks had raving reviews also and a few of my guests said they've never met such accommodating staff. Overall, a fabulous place for a fabulous night with great food and amazing staff. We also had family and friends stay in the hotel, beds are very comfortable, rooms are very clean and fresh, such a pleasant place to stay! To Ashley and Karensa, I cannot thank you enough for all the help you gave me to help make my night stress free, you girls are absolutely amazing! Just an overnight business stay. Beautiful and well-appointed hotel set in wooded grounds at the end of a long driveway. Good sized double room with everything needed EXCEPT a decent WiFi signal. It's an old rambling building and this may have contributed to poor signal, both for WiFi and mobile. This was a bit of a nuisance but not even of a bother to put me off staying again if passing through the area.

We stayed out of Edinburgh as much cheaper than in Edinburgh on a busy weekend - went to watch Harry Styles at Murrayfield! The first night wasn’t great as our room was noisy as the window wouldn’t close and at breakfast lots of items were not topped up. However, the staff moved us the next day and breakfast was much better stocked the next 2 mornings. The staff were so friendly and helpful - particularly Clare and Kayleigh. It was very easy and cheap to get the train into Edinburgh
