Grand Sydney Hotel

I don't even know how to begin... overall, the service staff were very friendly. We knew the hotel was old so we were expecting the worst but got a newly renovated room instead and that was nice. But the renovation felt incomplete with a number of issues / poorly done, and weird things like a very very rusty shower soap rack (because it's clearly newly renovated, why is it rusty???). Amenities wise there's a hair dryer, 2 bottles and complimentary coffee and tea packets. Nothing in minibar. Room was spacious, but the safe was spoilt and way too small (barely can keep iPad level small). There's only one door lock and no extra chain lock on the door. I mean I didn't feel unsafe unsafe but at the same time I knew it was not really safe. The water turned a bit brown for about 3 minutes the first night (we suspect rust?) but didn't appear any more after. Drainage was okay but can be improved. Towels were stained and bedsheets not pristine. It's beside a school, so expect some noise if your staying in the morning on weekdays. There was also an air freshener in the room that went off every hour (literally every hour throughout the night) but I'm pretty 100% sure there was nothing in the air freshener. The weirdest part was the outside of the hotel - not the hotel property itself but the road leading up to it. It seemed completely abandoned and like it could collapse anytime. Overall - would not stay again but if no other choice, can make do. Paid about $160 for 3 nights.

Overall the premise is on average. A few things that I think can be improve: Unpleasant Smoking Smell: Unfortunately, the entire premise, including the room, was filled with a strong smoking odor. This was quite disappointing as I expected the fresh and clean scent that is typical of most hotels. Even after some time, the smell did not subside, which affected the overall experience. Bed Sheet Cleanliness: The bed sheets were not as clean as expected, which further added to the discomfort. Cleanliness is a crucial aspect of any hotel stay, and this fell below the standard

Lovina Inn Hotel Batam

This was our first time staying at Lovina Inn coz we wanted to try some place other than our favourite hotel in Batam Centre. We had no expectation, knowing that this is a 3-star establishment. Arrived CNY eve and check-in was smooth. Room was simple and clean - looked like it had been recently renovated. First thing that went wrong was to find a pillar in the room (see photo). This was ok until my wife had her skirt snagged on a sharp corner of an aluminum strip separating the different coloured panels on this pillar. I checked and found all the aluminium strips has sharp corners each capable of not only snagging clothes but also cutting human skin. These were set at various levels so that legs, midriffs and faces of the unwary could be cut. I raised this complaint to reception, they sent a housekeeping staff to examine the hazard, and then....nothing, absolutely nothing, was done for the entire duration of our stay. Ironically, a similar pillar in the lobby had all the sharp edges on its aluminium strips filed smooth. The other hazard in the room was the shower head. The water pressure in the bathroom was pathetic from the sink tap - a mere trickle, with no hot water whatever. On the other hand the shower water pressure was a torrent and could get very hot. Sadly the shower screen covered only half the width of the opening so taking a shower meant that the rest of the bathroom was flooded. It didn't help either that the screen had a gap with the wall and the bathroom floor sloped away from the shower area. To minimise the flood one has to stand close to the shower while keeping the water flow moderate. Unfortunately, this results in the shower tap often being inadvertently pushed by one's body resulting in the ill-fitted shower head flying off the holder and crashing to the floor, sometimes hitting one's head first (ouch!!!) The hotel also promised complimentary toiletries (plural). All that was provided was a wall-mounted shower wash which (I assume) doubles as shampoo. The wall dispenser often got stuck when pressed and had to be pried out before it could be used again. Altogether, having a shower in this hotel is an adventure never to be forgotten. We had opted for the daily breakfast even though previous reviews had warned that the selection is limited and unchanging. The first morning was acceptable albeit with limited selection. We had not expected much from a 3-star hotel. When the hotel began to fill up over the holiday weekend we found on the second day that by the time we came down for breakfast, all we had left was coffee/tea with bread/toast & spreads. This was at 9am - breakfast is supposed to be from 6-10am. Raising a complaint to both serving or reception staff was met with resigned sighs. There was no top-up; the kitchen had not been sufficiently prepared for the influx of guests. Day 3 breakfast was a little better but then we came down at 8am. The final irritation was that we found out that this is one of the few hotels wh
Nagoya Hill Hotel Batam

Very efficient Check-in and Check-out as the items inside the fridge are complimentary. The staff at the Oriental resto for b'fast and the x'mas dinner were pretty attentive and we also had a pleasant experience with their security and hk staff. Grab can drop-off at the lobby but you have to 'grab' one from outside the main road at the vehicle exit point of the hotel driveway. B'fast items, although in variety are not of quality standards as compared to hotels in Thailand, which is inclusive in the room pricing. Same for their X'mas Dinner! Good location, and to Grand Batam Mall is only about S$2.50 where you can cross the road to A2 foodcourt and BCS mall. Taxi from Batam Center to hotel is standard at 70K IDR if you don't want to lug your bags to the roundabout outside which is a distance away. Overall, a pleasant stay!
